The first chapter of the book is told in the first person, letting us in to Jemima's thoughts. Only in the last few lines does the author's voice take over. Through the rest of the book, the writing moves between first person and third.

Answer: Journalist at the Kilburn Herald

Kilburn is an area of North London in the London Borough of Brent. The name Kilburn means 'Church by the stream'. The name came about from the Westbourne River, which now lies underground.
Kilburn is known for its large Irish population, but the area is home to a mix of different ethnic groups. In fact, it is considered one of the most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in London, or the UK.

3. Who are Jemima's unpleasant flatmates?

Answer: Sophie and Lisa

Sophie and Lisa lived in the flat before Jemima moved in. She describes them as having perfect figures, designer clothes and ready smiles. They treat her as their permanant tea-maker.

Answer: Ben

Ben works at the Kilburn Herald with Jemima. They go a course about the internet together and end up becoming friendly. He's hard working, good-looking and his dream is to be a tv news reader.

A stone is 14 pounds, so Jemima was about 100 pounds heavier that she should have been.

Jemima meets Brad in an internet chatroom and their relationship gives her the motivation to try to lose weight. Her hard work gets her down to 8 stone 9 (121 pounds) just in time to fly out and meet him for the first time.

Jemima quickly realises that being alone every day in a place where you only know one person isn't much fun. She starts to feel very lonely and runs out of things to do.

Lauren was also English, also from Kilburn, also a journalist. It's a huge relief to Jemima to have someone to talk to.

Jemima find photographs of Brad's overweight friend, Jenny. Jenny tells her that they have been together for a very long time. Brad had hoped for them to continue without Jemima ever knowing.

10. Why do Jemima and Ben not end up having lunch together when they first arrange to meet up in LA?

Answer: He doesn't recognise her.

When she arrives at the cafe, he doesn't recognise her and offers her a compliment as a stranger. She doesn't know what to do and goes home. They finally have dinner that night when she plucks up the courage to tell him that it's her. Once he gets back to London, he realises how much he loves her and sends her a plane ticket to come home.
