Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did the Ghost think to himself every time he was about to kill someone?

Answer: "I am invincible"

The beginning of the story describes a skilled assassin named the Ghost hunting down another famous hired killer named Walter Zelvas. Zelvas had stolen diamonds from his employer and had been found out. The Ghost was hired to punish Zelvas and bring the diamonds back. The Ghost managed to sloppily kill him, while thinking "I am invincible" as he took out his weapon.
2. Matthew went to the diamond district to find out how much the diamonds were worth. On average, how much was one of his nuggets worth?

Answer: $6200

Matthew went to the Diamond District to have his diamonds appraised. He lied and claimed that the nugget he carried was once an engagement ring. He went all over the town and got several different opinions, and the average worth of the diamond was valued at $6200 and it was about one and a half carats. One dealer told Matthew the diamond was fake and offered one hundred dollars to him. Matthew did the math and figured that all of the diamonds were worth about thirteen million dollars total.
3. Which assassin was described as "the one assassin who would go to heaven?"

Answer: The Ghost

Chukov wanted someone else to look for the diamonds, so he brought in another assassin as a backup. Her name was Marta Krall, a killer who had a passion for murder. The two discussed certain plans, which included the death of the Ghost. Krall told Chukov she heard the Ghost was pretty good, and he responded "Pretty good? They say he's the only assassin who will go to heaven. Satan will be too nervous having him around."
4. What did Katherine want to bring onto the airplane, but wasn't allowed?

Answer: Her toothpaste

Matthew surprised Katherine by springing a romantic trip to Paris. He presented her with a bag filled with baguettes, cheese, and wine. When they tried to get onto their plane, Katherine was told she couldn't bring her Tom's of Maine "Wicked Fresh" toothpaste because the largest tube you could bring was three ounces, and her tube was five ounces.

She almost got them thrown out of the airport fighting to bring it with her, but Matthew convinced her to calm down. It almost ruined all of his plans.
5. Matthew and Katherine had a very expensive lunch in Paris. Which anniversary was the elderly couple they sat next to celebrating?

Answer: Their half-year anniversary

Matthew was shocked at how expensive the fancy restaurant was but was happy at how beautiful and delicious it was. He and Katherine saw a couple dining together who appeared to be in their eighties. When asked, they told the young couple that they were only celebrating their half-year anniversary.

They told the younger couple about a museum they would be interested in seeing. Later Matthew and Katherine went to the secluded museum that showed contemporary artists, and they were grateful for the information.
6. Where did the Ghost get his nickname?

Answer: He thought of himself as the ghost of his father

Matthew Bannon, the art student who found the diamonds, had a strict father who always demanded his son to be strong. He convinced him to become a Marine, like he had once been. When Matthew returned, his dad revealed to him that he was a hired killer and he was a good one because of the skills he also learned in the Marines, and he also made sure he killed bad people.

At first Matthew was repulsed but the idea grew on him. He became a hired killer as well and he always thought of himself as the "ghost" of his father.
7. Which killer known for killing their victims slowly?

Answer: Marta Krall

John Rice and Nick Benzetti were Detectives for the New York Police Department and were hired by Chukov to find the diamonds and were not assassins. Marta Krall was a former supermodel who appeared on the cover of several German "Vogue" magazines. She was called the "queen of the slow death." She once kept a man alive for three days to torture him. Krall shot him a total of eighteen times and kept resuscitating him with her makeshift crash cart to extend his suffering.
8. How did Matthew manage to defeat Marta Krall?

Answer: He killed her with a pen

Marta Krall snuck into Matthew's hotel room when he was with Katherine. He managed to survive his first encounter with her. Later, after Katherine left him, Matthew drowned his sorrows by using drugs at a café. He sat in a private area and drew a picture of his beloved Katherine with a pen. Marta showed up once more and was very confident that she would kill him finally. Matthew asked her if he could take his picture with him and when he turned his back to her, he pretended to wet his pants.

In reality he actually grabbed his pen. Once he turned around, he used it and stuck the pen in Marta's eye and eventually it entered her brain and killed her. He carried/dragged her body to a car, tossed her body inside, and left her for good.
9. The Diamond Syndicate ultimately killed Nathaniel Price for losing their diamonds.

Answer: False

Despite his best efforts, Nathaniel Prince never recovered the diamonds that were stolen from the Diamond Syndicate. He was ultimately given the option to repay the Syndicate the thirteen million dollars the diamonds were worth. Nathaniel gave them the money, which was most of his savings.

He gave them the money and a promise that he would never return to America. He assumed he would be safe but upon returning home one day, he found a group of men who sought revenge. Years earlier Prince's wife and son were killed by a taxi while trying to cross the street. Prince had twenty-seven family members of the Dmitrov Cab Company burned alive and never looked back.

But surviving members tracked him down and killed him in revenge. They also killed his daughter Natalia, who was pregnant with their child. Nathaniel Prince took his daughter as a lover and neither survived the story.
10. How much money did Matthew get for the diamonds?

Answer: Seven million dollars

Matthew took the diamonds to a rival of the Diamond Syndicate because the diamonds were originally stolen from them. He arranged a meeting with a man named Diederik de Smet, disguised as an eighty-year-old man named Yitzchak Ziffer. Matthew assumed he would be double-crossed so he took great precautions.

The diamonds were worth thirteen million but he settled on seven million. His instincts were correct when de Smet tried to steal them back, but Matthew escaped with the money. He spread it out generously to his parents and his loyal friends.
