Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Single white male seeks female for companionship. 6'6" 270 lbs. Police officer in a small town, likes coyotes and buzzards. Motorcyclists need not apply. Tak!" Which King character would place this ad?

Answer: Collie Entragian

Collie is the rather nasty police officer in "Desperation". He has been possessed by the spirit of Tak, who, it seems, came out of the "China Pit" mine, and caused Collie to kill everyone in town. He then starts collecting tourists from the highway and placing them in holding cells. Tom Gordon is a baseball player forom the book "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon", Johnny Marinville is an author who is travelling across America on his Harley when he pulls over to take a leak and is met by Desperation's friendly officer, and Ralph Carver is travelling with his family and runs over a piece of highway carpet which flattens all the tires on their RV. Collie later kills their daughter by pushing her down some stairs, and takes his wife away, where she becomes Tak's next host.
2. "Single white female seeks male who will be nice to her. Has tu-tone green and orange hair, badly scarred left ear and crooked nose. Bulls need not apply." Whose ad is this?

Answer: Cynthia Smith

Cynthia Smith appears in "Rose Madder"; she also appeared in "Desperation" and "The Regulators". In "Rose Madder", she is a resident at the battered women's shelter Daughters and Sisters. She had her left ear almost ripped off by one of her former boyfriends, and Norman Daniels (Rose's husband) broke her nose at a Daughters and Sisters picnic. Rose McClendon is the main character from "Rose Madder", Mary Jackson is from "Desperation" and "The Regulators", as is Audrey Wyler. Cynthia Smith also appeared in "Insomnia" in the woman's shelter (thanks Alliecat!)
3. "Young girl seeks companion. Must like horses and be able to withstand the heat. Shop employees need not apply." Who might place an ad like this?

Answer: Charlie McGee

Charlie McGee is the "Firestarter". One of the rewards she received from the Shop for lighting fires was rides on a horse named Necromancer. They kept promising her that she could see her father, but they never had any intention of letting her. Norma Manders is the lady whose farm Charlie and her father stayed at, Susannah Dean is the lady in the wheelchair from "The Dark Tower" series, and Beverly Marsh appears in "IT".
4. "Single white female seeks date for the prom. Must be able to ignore my crazy religious mother, and please, no pigs' blood!" From which King character might this plea come?

Answer: Carrie White

Carrie White is, of course, the main character in the novel "Carrie" about a young girl with telekinesis. She is invited to her high school prom by one of the most popular boys in school as his way of apologising for all the rotten things that have been done to her.

When Carrie and her date, Tommy Ross, are crowned king and queen of the prom, Chris Hargensen (one of the most popular girls at school) and Billy Nolan (Chris's boyfriend) drop pigs' blood on them, which leads to the destruction of pretty much the entire town by Carrie as revenge for everything the kids at school have put her through. Wendy Yarrow appears in "Rose Madder", Frannie Goldsmith is in "The Stand" and Rachel Creed is from "Pet Semetary".
5. Whose ad is this: "Single African American male seeks female for outings. Librarian in a small town, doesn't like clowns or spiders. Has been known to explore sewers."?

Answer: Mike Hanlon

Mike Hanlon is the librarian in "IT". He is the only one of the 'Loser's Club' that stays behind in Derry after the first confrontation with Pennywise, so he is the only one that remembers everything. When IT returns, he is the one that calls the others back, reminding them of the promise they made 27 years ago that if IT ever came back, they would too, and finish IT off. Brad Josephson is one of the neighbours in "The Regulators", Dick Halloran is from "The Shining" and Kito Tidwell is the young boy in "Bag of Bones" who is drowned.
6. Who might place this ad: "Male seeks companion for adventure. Must be willing to travel, like 'wolfs' and have no objections to 'Seabrook Island' stuff."?

Answer: Jack Sawyer

From the novel "The Talisman", Jack Sawyer is a young boy who travels the width of the United States to find the Talisman so he can save his mother's life. He learns before he leaves that he can travel faster if he 'flips' into the territories, a world similar to our own, where his mother's twinner, Laura DeLoessian, queen of the territories, is also dying. Along the way, he drags a wolf back into our world, where he is eventually killed when the boy's are sent to the Sunlight Home for Wayward Boys. Eddie Dean is from "The Dark Tower" series, as is Jake Chambers, Ray Garraty appears in "The Long Walk", a novella in "The Bachman Books" by Richard Bachman, and one of my favourite stories.
7. "Ex bank vice-president living in Mexico seeks female for companionship. Have spent time in jail for a crime I didn't commit. Loves Rita Hayworth and Raquel Welch, hobbies include rock collecting." From whom might this ad come?

Answer: Andy Dufresne

Andy appears in "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption", a novella in "Different Seasons". He is wrongly imprisoned for the murder of his wife and her lover, and finally escapes by digging a tunnel behind a poster of Rita Hayworth, then later a poster of Raquel Welch.

He ends up in a town called Zihuatanejo in Mexico. Roland Deschain is the gunslinger from the book of the same name, Leland Gaunt is the shopkeeper from "Needful Things" and Arthur Denker is the Nazi from "Apt Pupil", a story from "Different Seasons".
8. Easy one: "Single white female seeks male for company on my farm. I love pigs and my favourite author is Paul Sheldon; in fact, you could say I'm his 'Number One Fan'" From which rather creepy woman might this ad come?

Answer: Annie Wilkes

Annie Wilkes is from "Misery". Author Paul Sheldon is in an automobile accident and is rescued by Annie, who takes him to her farm to recover. Unfortunately, she turns out to be a crazed fan who is none too happy when she finds out Paul has killed off her favourite character, Misery Chastain.

She forces him to write a novel just for her and bring Misery back to life. Nadine Cross appears in "The Stand", Liz Garfield is the rather selfish mother in "Hearts in Atlantis" and Norma Crandall is the nice old lady who lives across the road from the Creeds in "Pet Semetary".
9. "Teacher in a small town seeks female for outing to the fair. I have great luck at the Wheel of Fortune, but not at much else. I was in a coma for nearly five years, but other than some visions, I came out fine." Which lucky (or unlucky, depending on your perspective) man would this ad be from?

Answer: John Smith

John Smith is from the novel "The Dead Zone". After having a great night at the local fair where he cleaned up on the Wheel of Fortune, he was involved in a car accident which left him in a coma for 55 months. When he came out of it, he was able to tell things about people just by touching them. Speedy Parker was a character in "The Talisman", Louis Creed is from "Pet Semetary" and Andy McGee is Charlie's father in "Firestarter".
10. "Male seeks female. I am the 'twin' of a famous author who tried to cannabalise me 'in utero', but I came back to help him write. I am not a very nice guy." From which fictional character might this ad come?

Answer: George Stark

George Stark is the pseudonym of the character Thad Beaumont in the novel "The Dark Half". When Thad was 11 years old, he started having really bad headaches. When the doctor decided to open his head up for exploratory surgery, he discovered an eyeball, part of a nostril, three fingernails and two teeth.

The doctor theorised that Thad had begun existence as twins, but one was absorbed into the other. Richard Bachman is Stephen King's pseudonym, Gordon Lachance is an author in "The Body", a story from "Different Seasons" and Mike Noonan is the author in "Bag of Bones".
