Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After my parents were killed in a car crash, she raised me. Who was she?

Answer: Aunt Gin

Aunt Gin was a no-nonsense insurance claims adjuster whose only make-up was a little cold cream under each eye at bedtime. She wasn't particularly affectionate but she took good care of me.
2. This man is my neighbor, landlord, and friend. He has beautiful blue eyes. What's his name?

Answer: Henry Pitts

Henry is a retired baker and also a crossword puzzle writer. He's in his 80s, over twice my age, but I'm half in love with him.
3. I had a brief affair with this guy who pretty quickly returned to his wife, Camille. I still see him on the job sometimes. Who is he?

Answer: Jonah Robb

I fell for Jonah not knowing how entangled he was with his on-again, off-again wife. As soon as I realized that, I ended it, and we remained friends, though I steer clear of Camille. He's helped me out in a couple of cases.
4. I worked for this man when I was on the police force, and, even though I dropped out after two years, I stayed in touch with him and he gives me grudging respect. What's his name?

Answer: Con Dolan

Con Dolan was one of my lieutenants before I left the Santa Teresa police force. Later, he retired, but we still run into each other once in a while.
5. This lady bosses me around and feeds me strange animal parts, but for some reason, I keep coming back to her establishment. She's also married to my landlord's brother. What's her name?

Answer: Rosie

Rosie owns Rosie's Tavern, a restaurant on my block. She speaks in a thick Eastern European accent and serves really sour wine, but her place is one of my major haunts. I even have a favorite booth there.
6. I don't see her too much anymore since she got married, but she has been one of my few close friends. She worked at California Fidelity, drank a lot of Diet Coke, and chain smoked. Who is she?

Answer: Vera

Men love Vera. I don't know how she does it. She once told me she thinks of men like a box of Whitman's samplers. "I like to take a little bite out of each and then move on before the box gets stale."
7. I dated this guy for a while, another police officer, and I thought it was the real deal, but it sort of fizzled out. He has curly hair and family money. Who's this guy?

Answer: Cheney Phillips

Cheney looks more like a model than a cop. I can see why it didn't work out.
8. You could say one of my best friends is an inanimate object, one that has survived car crashes, bombings, and attempted murder with me. What is it?

Answer: Synthetic black dress

My friends have told me to burn the dress that I've had forever. But I won't because (a) it works just fine on the rare occasions I need a black dress and (b) I don't think it would burn because it's made from some weird toxic element.
9. I've been married. Twice. And divorced twice. Do you know the name of these two guys?

Answer: Mickey and Daniel

I don't talk about these guys much and very rarely use their names (Mickey and Daniel). I also see a guy named Bob Dietz once in a while when he's in town. I prefer the single life anyway.
10. I always thought I was an orphan with no other family after Aunt Gin died, but I learned about these maternal cousins I have who are bugging me to see them more. And apparently my grandmother is still alive. She's called by a specific name. What is it?

Answer: Grand

"Cornelia LaGrand Kinsey" is her full name but apparently all those relatives call her Grand. I don't know what to think about all that anyway, so I don't much.
