Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the musical, Javert says that he "was born inside a jail". Is this also revealed in the book?

Answer: Yes

In both versions Javert tells us that he was born in a jail, however, he never tells the audience anything else about his parents or background.
2. In the musical we first see Javert releasing Jean Valjean from prison. What is he doing the first time we see him in the book?

Answer: Working as an inspector

When we first see him, he catches a glance of Jean Valjean, and recognises him. However Javert does not know where he remembers him from, yet.
3. In the musical Javert never successfully arrests anyone on stage. Is this the case in the book?

Answer: He catches several important characters

He arrests Thenardier, Madame Thenardier, Eponine, Azelma and several other members of their gang. He also successfully arrests Jean Valjean.
4. We all know that his name is Inspector Javert, but do either of the versions mention his first name?

Answer: No

No, just as neither the book nor the musical mentions the last name of several characters, Javert's first name is never mentioned.
5. According to the musical Javert meets all of the main characters. Which of these characters did Javert NOT meet in the book?

Answer: Cosette

He meets Jean Valjean, numerous times.
He meets Fantine when she is arrested.
He meets Thenardier, Madame Thenardier and Eponine when they are arrested.
He meets Enjolras and Gavroche when he is at the barricade.
6. Gavroche recognises Javert at the barricade in the musical. Who recognises him at the barricade in the book?

Answer: Gavroche

Yes, Gavroche recognises him in the book as well as in the musical, because Javert had "pulled me off the cornice of the Port Royal".
Marius was not yet at the barricade.
Eponine is not mentioned as being at the barricade yet in the book and doesn't arrive until later in the musical.
Enjolras did not recognise him as he let Javert join the barricade.
7. In the musical Javert doesn't kill anyone directly. Who does he kill in the book?

Answer: He doesn't kill anyone directly

He doesn't actually kill anyone directly, although some of his actions do not help the situations of several characters, such as: Fantine, Madame Thenardier and Gavroche.
8. In the musical version Javert finds Jean Valjean outside the sewers; were does he find him in the book?

Answer: He comes across him in the sewers while chasing Thenardier

At this point Jean Valjean asks Javert to allow Marius to get treatment, from the wounds he received from the barricade. Eventually Javert agrees to let them go, but Jean Valjean tells Javert where to find him when it is done.
9. What are the differences between Javert's suicide in the musical and that in the book?

Answer: He doesn't sing in the book

In the book it is not only because he can't live "in the debt of a thief", but also because he knows that Jean Valjean is good and he also knows he will never be able to leave him alone, if he lives.
10. According to most versions of the musical, Javert appears (at the same time as the Thenardiers) as a ghost with everyone else in the finale. What happens in the book?

Answer: Only one person appears to Jean Valjean, and it isn't Javert

Javert still dies first. According to the book only the bishop appeared and the bishop was only visible to Jean Valjean.
