Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Menolly is abused both mentally and physically by her parents and other members of their small community, once her beloved mentor Petiron dies. Although she is incredibly good at something usually highly prized in her world, "everyone" knows that "girls cannot be..."; what can girls not be?

Answer: Harpers

Menolly is the daughter of Yanus, Holder of Half-circle Seahold, on Anne McCaffrey's wonderfully imagined world of Pern. She is incredibly talented, but when Harper Petiron dies, her family are ashamed of her and hide her away from the new harper. Eventually Menolly can take no more and runs away, finally finding happiness as an apprentice in the Harper Hall.
"Dragonsong" and "Dragonsinger" are the Pern novels which tell us Menolly's story, and they were first published in 1976 and 1977 respectively.
2. Written for younger readers, and first published in 1973, which post apocalyptic book tells the story of Ann Burden and Mr. Loomis?

Answer: Z for Zachariah

Left alone after a nuclear war, Ann thinks she may be the only person left alive, until one day, Mr. Loomis arrives wearing a radiation suit and suffering from radiation sickness. Author Robert C. O'Brien died shortly before "Z for Zachariah" was published. He also wrote "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH", first published in 1971.
3. In the 1975 book by O.T. Nelson, who is "The Girl Who Owned a City"?

Answer: Lisa Nelson

Lisa, and her brother Todd, were named for the author's own children, and the story is set in the area where they lived at the time he wrote it. Aimed at younger readers, "The Girl Who Owned a City" is still sometimes taught in schools today.
4. When "Podkayne of Mars" was first written, Robert Heinlein wanted a particular ending for the story. His publisher had other ideas, and against his own wishes, Heinlein rewrote the end. What happened to Podkayne in Heinlein's original ending?

Answer: She is killed by a nuclear bomb planted by her brother

The original story had Podkayne dying in the blast of her brother Clark's bomb, after she runs back to save a baby Venusian "fairy" from their kidnappers. The publishers wanted a happier ending, as Heinlein's previous novels were juveniles and they didn't want to "upset children" with the death of a main character.

Heinlein rewrote so that Podkayne was injured in the blast but survived. The story was first published as a serial in the magazine "Worlds of If" between November 1962 and March 1963.

In 1996, an edition with both endings was published, to allow readers to choose which one they preferred.
5. In "The Martian General's Daughter", title character Justa Black is her father's aide-de-camp and the book is written in the form of her memoirs. During the course of the story, what plague eventually causes the downfall and dissolution of the Pan-Polarian Empire?

Answer: Metal-eating nanoplague

Set in the 23rd century, "The Martian General's Daughter" is based on the actual history of the Roman Empire during the third century period known as the "Imperial Crisis". Written by Theodore Judson, it was first published in 2008.
6. Which female science fiction character describes herself thus? "I am thirty-three years old. I have brown hair. I stand five seven without shoes".

Answer: Offred

Offred, from "Of Fred", is the title character in Margaret Atwood's powerful novel "The Handmaid's Tale", first published in 1985. Lessa of Benden Weyr is the rider of golden queen dragon Ramoth, in Anne McCaffrey's "Pern" novels.
Anita Blake is the protagonist of Laurell K. Hamilton's "Vampire Hunter" series, and Éowyn is of course from "Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien.
7. Mary's whole world consists of her enclosed village, protected from the zombie hordes outside the fence by Guardians, and all under the control of the Sisterhood. There is a path leading to the village and away again but nobody seems to know where, if anywhere, it leads. Which book is this?

Answer: The Forest of Hands and Teeth

"The Forest of Hands and Teeth", by Carrie Ryan, was first published in 2009.
A "New York Times" Bestseller, it was nominated for several awards, and followed in 2010 by the sequel "The Dead-Tossed Waves" which tells the story of Mary's daughter Gabry.
8. Which of these books by Ursula K. Le Guin is mostly the story of a woman called Stone Telling, with a narrator called Pandora?

Answer: Always Coming Home

"Always Coming Home" was first published in 1985. It is written as though it is a textbook or study guide to the culture of a people known as the Kesh, who live in California several hundred years from now, and even includes Keshian recipes and poetry.
9. In which post-apocalyptic book do Mary Hope and Rachel Morrow gather as many books as they can, with the aim of preserving them for future generations?

Answer: A Gift Upon the Shore

Their plans are threatened when a group of religious fundamentalists come to live with the women on Rachel's farmstead. After Rachel's death, Mary realises that her precious library is under threat, and vows to do anything in her power to save the books as Rachel wanted. "A Gift Upon the Shore" was written by M.K. Wren, and first published in 1990.
10. In Germany she is Veronique, in The Netherlands she is Ravian, and in Denmark, Norway and Sweden she is Linda. This 11th century French peasant girl was transported through time, trained as a "Spatio-Temporal Agent" and assigned to be the partner of Valerian. Like J.M. Barrie's Wendy, her original name was made up for her character by the authors; who is she?

Answer: Laureline

Valerian and Laureline first appeared in "Bad Dreams" in 1967, as the first instalment of the "Valerian: Spatio-Temporal Agent" series, in "Pilote" magazine. Laureline saved time-traveller Valerian's life and he took her back with him when he returned to base.

Originally, Laureline was only supposed to appear in the one story, but she proved so popular that the series eventually continued until 2010 when the final adventure "L'Ouvre Temps" was published. By this time the series was entitled "Valerian and Laureline".

The name Laureline has proved popular in France since the writers Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières invented it, and the first baby to be so named was baptised in 1968.
