Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What "congenital defect" did Grandpa Josef predict his grandson would have?

Answer: Syndactyly

Syndactyly is the webbing of fingers and/or toes.

Amelia is the absence of arms or legs. (answers.com)

Anencephaly is a defect of the neural tube. What happens is the head end of the neural tube doesn't close, which causes a large portion of the brain, cranium and scalp to not develop. The brain that does develop is usually not covered by bone or skin. (answers.com)

Situs inversus is "a rare congenital disorder in which the major visceral organs are reversed from left to right as a mirror image of the normal condition..." (answers.com)
2. In addition to five terrible days, Josef mentioned a couple of other rather significant things, one of which was "don't trust the clown." What was another?

Answer: Kidneys

Josef's statement about not trusting clowns was spot on, considering that Jimmy had negative encounters with four crazy clowns. Josef's mentioning of kidneys is important because Lorrie loses a kidney when she's shot by Konrad Beezo, and later it is discovered that her daughter Annie has a kind of cancer on her kidneys and needs a transplant. Snow, fire and guns were not mentioned by Josef, but all played parts in Jimmy's life.
3. Punchinello Beezo shot Jimmy on the evening of September 15, 1994 (the first of the five predicted terrible days). Where on his body was Jimmy wounded?

Answer: his left leg

Two bullets were fired into Jimmy's left leg. He had to have surgery, and pins and plates were left in his leg.
4. One week before the second predicted day, Lorrie went into labor. On the way to the hospital, she and Jimmy encountered Konrad Beezo. What did he want?

Answer: to take Jimmy's baby

While Konrad did try to kill Jimmy, this was not his main objective. He said that Jimmy and Lorrie had robbed him (Konrad) of his son (Punchinello), so he wanted to take their son in return. Konrad had been listening and heard Lorrie say she was having a boy, but it was just a hunch she had; she had a girl and named her Annie.
5. Lorrie and Jimmy went to visit Punchinello in prison. Jimmy revealed something to Punch. What was it?

Answer: Jimmy and Punch are fraternal twins

It's true, Virgilio is Jimmy's father. But, this is not what Jimmy tells Punchinello in prison. Jimmy had found out that he was Punch's twin brother. The real Tock boy was stillborn. A nurse in the maternity ward on the night of Jimmy and Punch's birth took one of the twins and gave him to the Tocks.

He was raised as Jimmy Tock, and the family wasn't informed that he was not really their son. Later on in the book, Virgilio Vivacemente reveals that he fathered his daughter's children. Interesting note: This is not the first Koontz book where something like this happens.

In "Whispers", the main psycho's grandfather was also his father.
6. What made the fourth predicted day (November 26, 2003) terrible?

Answer: Grandma Rowena died

Of course Jimmy is Lucy's biological father. Annie didn't die, she had the transplant surgery after Punchinello DID agree to donate. However, Grandma Rowena did die on that day. Very sad.
7. Chapters 65 through 68 were narrated by whom?

Answer: Lorrie

The narration switched to Lorrie in these chapters to fool the reader into thinking that Jimmy died before finishing the book.
8. What did Virgilio want from Jimmy and Lorrie?

Answer: He wanted to buy their son

Virgilio ended up offering them $422,500 for their son. He said, "The blood of aerialists is concentrated in him as never before" (Chapter 67).
9. Who killed Virgilio Vivacemente?

Answer: Lorrie

Virgilio shot Jimmy four times, Lorrie shot Virgilio once in the head, then three more times.
10. Lorrie and Jimmy had a fourth child. What did they name this baby?

Answer: Rowena

Chilston was the name of a friend of Lorrie's that did bungee tours. Rudy and Madeline are Jimmy's parents. Rowena was Jimmy's grandmother.
