Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This book is about the plans of a mother to marry off her five daughters. Only two of her daughters are *happily* married by the end of the book. It takes place in England, in the early 1800s.

Answer: Pride and Prejudice

'Pride and Prejudice' is one of my favorite books of all time. Jane Austen does a wonderful job portraying all of the characters. I wouldn't count Lydia as one of those "happily married", though!
2. An orphan goes through a difficult childhood. She then becomes the governess of a French child, and falls in love with the child's guardian. When she finds out he was already married to a mad woman, she runs away, only to return later and fall back in love.

Answer: Jane Eyre

I also love 'Jane Eyre', by Charlotte Bronte. I cried through part of it - it's very well written.
3. A red-haired orphan goes to live on Prince Edward Island with a brother and sister who live on a farm. She has a very large imagination and a quick temper. This book is about her as she grows up.

Answer: Anne of Green Gables

There are also several sequels to 'Anne of Green Gables', including 'Anne of Avonlea', 'Anne of the Island', and others. These books are by L.M. Montgomery.
4. An orphan (yes, another) goes to live with her uncle, of whom she is afraid. She finds a crippled cousin, a boy who loves nature, and a locked-up garden.

Answer: The Secret Garden

This is a good book by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The spoiled orphan child (Mary) learns a lot during her time with her uncle. She also meets Colin (her cousin) and Dickon (the nature boy).
5. This book is about a boy who goes on a journey with several 'good guys' and several sailors-turned-pirates to find a buried treasure.

Answer: Treasure Island

A Robert Louis Stevenson classic, this book is a great adventure book.
6. This book is about a group of rabbits who leave their warren to find a new life. It includes an escape, a plan to find some doe rabbits, the escape from a dangerous warren, and the rest of their struggles

Answer: Watership Down

This was one of my favorite books (written by Richard Adams) for a long time. Even though it sounds a little cheesey, it's not. It's really good.
7. This trilogy is about a quest to destroy the One Ring which has evil power. It takes place in Middle Earth, among many amazing creatures and people.

Answer: Lord of the Rings

These are my all-time favorite books! They include 'The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Two Towers', and 'The Return of the King'. They are all by J.R.R. Tolkien.
8. This is a book about a boy from another planet, as he explains his journeys to other planets (including Earth), and shares wisdom with a human he finds on Earth.

Answer: The Little Prince

This book is short, but it's really good. It makes you think. It's written by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.
9. This is about an English schoolgirl who was born in India and is later sent to London to go to boarding school. Her father goes off and is thought to have died. The book tells about her life at boarding school and afterward.

Answer: The Little Princess

The girl, Sarah, later goes to live with a family who knew her father in the war. Unlike the movies, Sarah's father is never 'found' - he stays missing. This book is by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
10. A young boy in an early American town gets into all sorts of mischief. He finds criminals, gets lost in a cave, and whitewashes a fence (big clue!).

Answer: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Personally, I never liked this book as much as others. I thought Huck Finn was even worse, but that's just me. Of course, this book is by Mark Twain.
