Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which novel will you find these four characters: Athos - Porthos - Aramis - D'Artagnan?

Answer: 'The Three Musketeers' by Alexandre Dumas.

'All for one and one for all' is probably the most famous rallying cry in literature and sums up this swashbuckling tale of a 17th Century lad (D'Artagnan) as he endeavours to become one of the famed Musketeers.
2. In which volume, from a series of novels, will you find these four friends: Roland Deschain - Eddie Dean - Susannah Dean - Jake Chambers?

Answer: 'The Wolves of the Calla' by Stephen King.

'The Wolves of the Calla' is the fifth volume in the 'Dark Tower' series of novels by Stephen King and focuses on Roland's Ka-Tet as they are called in to help the small farming community of Calla Bryn Sturgis take on the 'Wolves' who are coming to kidnap their children. Shades of 'The Seven Samurai' and 'The Magnificent Seven' come to mind.
3. In which British classic will you find these four characters: George - Harris - 'J' - Montmorency?

Answer: 'Three Men in a Boat' by Jerome K Jerome.

This is a delightful tale of three Victorian gentlemen taking a boat journey along the River Thames accompanied by their dog, Montmorency. Did you know that the 'K' in Jerome K Jerome stands for Klapka?
4. There is a good chance that you have read about the adventures of these children, but in which book would you find: Julian - Dick - Anne - George?

Answer: 'Five Go Adventuring Again' by Enid Blyton.

Julian, Dick, Anne and George are of course the four adventurous children who with Timmy the dog make up Enid Blyton's 'Famous Five'. This is the second book in the 'Famous Five' series and sees the pals on the trail of a thief at Christmastime.
5. With names like these, I am sure you will remember which literary classic these four belong in: Nathaniel Winkle - Augustus Snodgrass - Tracy Tupman - Alfred Jingle?

Answer: 'The Pickwick Papers' by Charles Dickens.

'The Pickwick Papers' started life as a serial, being printed in nineteen installments from 1836 to 1837 and followed the adventures of various members of the Pickwick Club as they traveled around England by stagecoach.
6. If you like adventure stories with a hint of romance then you may well know which classic these four appear in: Michael - John - Digby - Isobel Rivers?

Answer: 'Beau Geste' by P.C. Wren.

'Beau Geste' follows the adventures of the three Geste brothers, Michael (Beau), John and Digby as they flee from family shame and join the French Foreign Legion in the ambiguously named 'French African Colony'.
7. Dr David Bowman - Dr Frank Poole - HAL - Moonwatcher. Four characters who could only be from one book, but which one?

Answer: '2001- A Space Odyssey' by Arthur C. Clarke.

Everybody remembers the scene from the film with the prehistoric primate with the jawbone smashing his way towards intelligence. This was 'Moonwatcher', the name given to him in the book. The two 'Doctors' were the astronauts on the Jupiter mission, with Dr. David (Dave) Bowman being the only survivor after outwitting the spaceship's evil computer, HAL 9000.
8. Connie Rivers - Tom Joad - Jim Casy - Noah Joad, are characters in a book that epitomizes a certain period in American history, but which book is it?

Answer: 'The Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck.

'The Grapes of Wrath' is the story of the Joad family and their journey across Depression era America in the hope of finding a better life in California. The title comes from a line in "The Battle Hymn of the Republic": "He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored".
9. Billy Bones - Captain Alexander Smollett - Israel Hands - Ben Gunn, are all characters from which famous adventure story?

Answer: 'Treasure Island' by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Maybe the most famous children's adventure book ever, 'Treasure Island' tells the story of cabin boy Jim Hawkins and his adventures amongst the treacherous and piratical crew of the schooner, 'Hispaniola' as they search for buried treasure.
10. Be careful with this one. Inside which book would you find all of these Middle-Earth characters: Gandalf the Grey - Elrond - Thorin Oakenshield - Bard of Lake-town?

Answer: 'The Hobbit' by J.R.R. Tolkein.

'The Hobbit' was written by Tolkein especially for his children before it was discovered by an employee of George Allen and Unwin Publishers who persuaded him to have it published, which it was in 1937. It was so successful that the publishers requested a sequel.

The rest is history. The sequel became 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy but you will only find Thorin Oakenshield and Bard the Bowman in the pages of 'The Hobbit'.
