Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our heroes are Frodo from "Lord of the Rings" and Garion from "The Belgariad". Which of the following do they NOT have in common?

Answer: both marry at the end

When their parents are killed, Frodo is raised by his Uncle Bilbo and Garion is raised by his Aunt Pol. Both travel on a quest, Frodo to destroy the ring and Garion to retrieve the Orb. Frodo never really got the chance to be around water after his parents died as most hobbits are afraid of water. Garion almost drowned once while rafting. Garion marries Ce'Nedra, but Frodo does not get married.
2. Gandalf and Belgarath are both wise old wizards that help shepherd the hero along the way. Gandalf is given many names, such as Mithrandir and Stormcrow. What alternate name is Belgarath given by Garion?

Answer: Mister Wolf

While some readers are confused because so many characters have so many different names (ie Aragorn, Strider, Elessar) in "Lord of the Rings", David Eddings does that as well (ie Kheldar, Silk, Ambar, Radek) in "The Belgariad".
3. Sauron is known as The ____ Lord in "Lord of the Rings". In "The Belgariad", Torak is known as The Child of ____. Which is the missing word?

Answer: Dark

The opposite of The Child of Dark is, appropriately, The Child of Light - Belgarion. The Child of Dark in "The Mallorean" is Zandramas until the end, then it is Garion's son Geran, and Eriond becomes The Child of Light.
4. What do Aragorn and Garion NOT have in common?

Answer: both have elfstones

Aragorn is King of Gondor; Garion is King of Riva. Aragorn marries Arwen - daughter of elflord Elrond; Garion marries C'Nedra - a Tolnedran princess. Aragorn carries Anduril, forged from the shards of Narsil; Garion carries The Sword of the Rivan King, that holds the Orb as its pommelstone. Only Aragorn wears an elfstone.
5. Legolas is the famed archer in "Lord of the Rings". Who is the archer in "The Belgariad"?

Answer: Lelldorin

Lelldorin is Asturian, a people known far and wide for their archery skills. Lelldorin of Willdantor is one of the best. He is referred to in the Mrin Prophecies as "The Archer."
6. The Fellowship in "Lord of the Rings" was chosen by Elrond and the council to represent the main races: human, elf, dwarf and hobbit. The Group in "The Belgariad" was chosen how?

Answer: they were all listed in the Mrin prophecy

The Group in "The Belgariad" also seemed to represent most of the races: Alorn, Tolnedran, Arend, Sendar, Marag and Ulgo. They did not, however, have a Nyissan in the group. Sadi the Nyissan was part of the Group in "The Mallorean".
7. As part of the quest in "The Belgariad" the group travels into the caves of Prolgu. What underground region does the Fellowship enter in "Fellowship of the Ring"?

Answer: Moria

The other similarity is that in each case someone was left behind. C'Nedra had to stay in Prolgu while the rest of the group went on to Cthol Murgos. Unfortunately, Gandalf fell (they thought to his death) while fighting the Balrog. Both return to the group before the end though.
8. Denethor was the Steward of Gondor, which means he ruled in Gondor until the rightful king returned. Brand served the same purpose on the Isle of Winds. What was his title?

Answer: Warder of Riva

Brand was murdered by members of the Bear-Cult attempting to kill C'Nedra and Prince Geran in "Guardians of the West". Denethor went mad and tried to kill his son Faramir, but only succeeded in killing himself in "Return of the King".
9. In other books by the same authors, set in the same world, there is a monster in common. In "The Mallorean" by Eddings, the Group must fight a dragon several times. What is the name of the dragon from Tolkien's "The Hobbit"?

Answer: Smaug

Kazul is the dragon from Patricia C Wrede's "Enchanted Forest Chronicles". Jewelclaw is from Tamora Pierce's "Realm of the Gods." Mnementh is from Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern" series.
10. Both J.R.R. Tolkien and David Eddings were college professors. What subject did they both teach?

Answer: English

J.R.R. Tolkien taught Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at Oxford University. In addition to being an English professor, David Eddings was also a sales clerk for Boeing and served in the US Army.
