Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our story begins in 1648 when Angelique is how old?

Answer: twelve

We first meet Angelique in "Angelique - Marquise of the Angels". Although the daughter of a nobleman her family are poor, burdened with high taxes and many expenses. As a result Angelique is left to run wild with the local children. We are however left in no doubt that greater things are in store for her when, on a visit to relatives to beg for money, she foils a plot to poison King Louis XIV who is having to battle for his throne.

In 1648 Louis XIV was only ten years old and French politics were full of intrigue and danger. Nobles were in revolt over taxes and restraint of their powers. The peasant class were poor and starving and there were riots in the streets of Paris.
2. When she is seventeen Angelique enters into an arranged marriage with whom?

Answer: Joffrey de Peyrac

Angelique is sent away to a convent to complete her education and returns home at seventeen to find that her family have arranged a marriage to Joffrey de Peyrac, Lord of Toulouse. As he is several years older than her, as well as being disfigured, crippled and with a reputation for carrying out black magic she is horrified at the prospect, but agrees to the marriage to save the family fortunes. On their wedding night Joffrey realises she is terrified of him and sets out to seduce her. Fascinated in spite of herself Angelique comes to realise that he is in fact a quite remarkable man and falls in love with him.
3. How does Joffrey de Peyrac die?

Answer: Burnt at the stake

The Archbishop of Toulouse believes that Joffrey is an alchemist who has discovered how to turn base metal into gold. When Angelique and Joffrey are summoned to court he resurrects the old rumours of magic, and on the strength of these has Joffrey arrested for witchcraft. Despite Angelique's frantic efforts Joffrey is tried in a trial where the outcome is always certain, and is sentenced to be burnt at the stake as a witch. His possessions and fortune are seized by the Crown.
4. Where does Angelique first meet King Louis XIV?

Answer: At his wedding to Marie-Therese

As Lord and Lady of Toulouse Angelique and Joffrey are summoned to Paris to the wedding of King Louis XIV to Marie-Therese. By this time Angelique has given birth to their first son and is pregnant with their second. It is during this visit that Joffrey is arrested and Angelique ends up destitute and pregnant living on the streets of Paris.
5. Angelique has two sons with Joffrey. What are their names?

Answer: Florimond and Cantor

After Joffrey's death Angelique leaves her two sons, Florimond, born before their ill fated visit to Paris, and Cantor, with her sister while she becomes the mistress of the leader of a band of beggars. Visiting her children she finds Florimond abandoned and living in a dog kennel and Cantor missing, possibly abducted by gypsies. She persuades a Guard Captain to help her rescue him and, reunited with her children, starts to turn her life around by finding work in an inn. Once again however disaster strikes when a group of drunken men murder the inn keeper and attack Angelique. She recognises all of them, in particular the King's brother. In revenge she exposes the men one at a time to the public, but just before the King's brother is exposed she receives a summons to the Royal presence, and is made an offer.

"Angelique and The Road To Versailles" is the second book of the series and details the life of the beggars of Paris and their constant struggle to survive.
6. What is the name of Angelique's second husband?

Answer: Philippe du Plessis Bellerie

Rewarded by the King for not exposing his brother Angelique sets herself up as an independent businesswoman, but needs a suitable alliance to completely restore her respectability. She marries Marquis Philippe du Plessis Bellerie, but it is far from a love match. He is determined to keep her away from court, but the King is becoming increasingly enamoured by her. She bears Philippe a son, but also receives news that her second son, Cantor, who has become page to an Admiral, has died when his galley was sunk by the pirate Rescator.

Set in the time when Louis XIV was building his reputation as 'The Sun King', "Angelique and The King" is full of meticulous historical detail and vividly paints a picture of the court at Versailles.
7. How does Philippe du Plessis Bellerie die?

Answer: In battle

Philippe comes to Angelique to comfort her following the death of Cantor, and together they accompany the King and his courtiers to the battlefront to view the progress of the war, but Angelique is woken one morning with the news that Philippe has been decapitated by a cannon ball.

She goes to her home to mourn in peace, but is soon summoned to Versailles by the King, who is becoming more and more infatuated with her, even whilst in the middle of an affair with Madame de Montespan.
8. Believing her first husband to still be alive, Angelique leaves France and heads for where?

She learns that her Protestant peasants are being beaten and tortured by her guards, and eventually sends word to the King to ask him for help, but before help can arrive the guards embark on a night of violence that leaves many dead. Angelique then leads a Protestant rebellion in the region, but is eventually beaten and betrayed, and is forced to flee France on Rescator's ship which is bound for America.

With winter drawing on and hunger an ever present danger they also have to cope with warring Indian tribes, and a visionary nun who declares that Angelique is in fact the She-Devil of Acadia, who is prophesied to bring death and destruction.
