Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which novella tells us of a United States under the control of "The Major", where teenage boys take part in a grisly competition in which the losers are put to death, and dissenters are "squadded"?

Answer: The Long Walk

"The Long Walk" by Stephen King was written in 1979, and originally published under the name Richard Bachman. In 2009 it was published as a single volume under his own name.

Each year, 100 teenage boys must begin to walk, at not less than four miles an hour. Each time they slow down, they are warned every thirty seconds. Thirty seconds after the third warning, if they are not back up to speed, they are shot. The last one left alive is the winner.
2. Piers Anthony began his "Bio of a Space Tyrant" series with "Refugee". Who is the Space Tyrant of the title?

Answer: Hope Hubris

The original five volumes of Hope's story were "Refugee" (1983), "Mercenary" (1984), "Executive" (1985), "Politician" (1985) and "Statesman" (1986). In 2002 a follow-on volume, "Iron Maiden", all about Hope's sister Spirit Hubris, was published.

This epic series tells how Hope and his two sisters must flee their home and become refugees in the Jupiter colonies. Eventually, Hope rises to be the Dictator of the system, and imposes his own rule on the people of Jupiter.
3. In the "Tripods Trilogy", by John Christopher, the earth is under the control of mysterious alien overlords, who emerge from their domed cities only to choose new slaves to take back with them. Which of these is NOT one of the trilogy?

Answer: Beyond the Burning Lands

"The White Mountains" and "The City of Gold and Lead" were both first published in 1967, and "The Pool of Fire" was published in 1968.
"Beyond the Burning Lands" (1971) is by John Christopher, but is one of his "Prince in Waiting" trilogy.
The prequel "When the Tripods Came" (not written until 1988) tells how the aliens arrived, and used the TV network to enslave the people of Earth using "caps" which are melded into their scalp and control their brains. The main trilogy tells us how a small group of freedom fighters escape from the control of the caps, and take back Earth from the invaders.
4. In Robert Heinlein's "To Sail Beyond the Sunset", we are told how a totalitarian religious dictator came to power in the United States with these words: - [In 2012 He] "polled 27 percent of the popular vote... which won 81 percent of the Electoral College votes." "In 2016 there was no election." Who is this dictator?

Answer: Nehemiah Scudder

"To Sail Beyond the Sunset" was the last book by Robert A. Heinlein to be published during his lifetime, in 1987.
The story of the eventual overthrow of Scudder's regime is told in "If This Goes On", a novella first published in "Astounding Science Fiction" magazine in 1940. Heinlein later expanded it slightly and it was included in the "The Past Through Tomorrow" and "Revolt in 2100" anthologies, published in 1967 and 1953 respectively.
Scudder is a religious dictator, and rules with a rod of iron for years. Anyone who disagrees with him tends to disappear. In the end he is brought down with the help of a small group of palace guards and "ripped to pieces by the Virgins" who had suffered much abuse at his hands.
5. "The Caves of Klydor", by Douglas Hill, is the second book in a trilogy about a group of teenagers who are exiled for offenses against Earth's totalitarian regime. The name of the regime forms part of the titles of the other two volumes; what is it?

Answer: Colsec

"Exiles of Colsec" was first published in 1984, and followed by "The Caves of Klydor" and "Colsec Rebellion" in 1984 and 1985 respectively.
A group of teenagers crash land on the planet where they were being dumped into exile. Eventually, the survivors manage to make their way back to Earth, and join with other teenagers from the underground gang cultures. They start a rebellion to bring down the regime.
6. Which book by Jack London, first published in 1907, tells us of the poor workers living in the "wonder city of Asgard", under the rule of "The Oligarchy"?

Answer: Iron Heel

"Iron Heel" was unusual for its time, as the story is told from the first person point of view of a female character, via her hidden diary. The "Iron Heel" of the title is the colloquial name for the Oligarchy which rules North America.
7. In which series of books does Elspeth Gordie join a network of "Misfits" working to overthrow the Council and the Herder Faction?

Answer: Obernetwyn Chronicles

"Obernetwyn", the first book of Isobelle Carmody's series was first published in 1987. The story takes place in the far future, many years after a nuclear war kills off most of the people in Australia, where they are set. The Council and the Herder Faction work together to control every aspect of people's lives, and anyone who is even a tiny bit different or physically imperfect is burned at the stake as a Misfit or heretic.
8. In the 2006 film version of "V For Vendetta", Adam Sutler is the Leader who rules Great Britain with an iron fist. What is his name in the book?

Answer: Adam Susan

In the graphic novel, first published in comic book form between 1982 and 1989, Adam James Susan starts out as a policeman with extreme right wing views. He comes to power with the aid of a group of political extremists and business leaders, and ruthlessly imposes his views on everyone in the country.
In the 2006 film version, directed by James McTeigue, the character was renamed Sutler and played by John Hurt.
9. When Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip was elected President of the United States, he promised the people peace and prosperity for all. Very quickly though, he amended the Constitution to place himself in sole power for life, declared Martial Law, and used his "MM" corps of secret police to enforce his laws. What does MM stand for?

Answer: Minute Men

"It Can't Happen Here" was first published in 1935, and has since been said to satirise the rise to power of Hitler in Germany at the time.
Author Sinclair Lewis also collaborated with John Moffit to write a stage play of the story.
10. In the "Star Wars" universe, Emperor Palpatine is the Dictator who rules The Galactic Empire. What is his Sith Lord name?

Answer: Darth Sidious

Originally portrayed as a humble civil servant and Senator for Naboo, the first mention of Palpatine is in the original novelisation of "Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker" (1976), written by Alan Dean Foster. He also appears in the "Dark Empire" comic books by Tom Veitch, published in 1991 and 1992.
Darth Tyranus is the Sith Lord alter ego of Count Dooku (just in case you were dying to know :-D )
