Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did David travel on his summer vacation with his boyfriend, Hugh?

Answer: France

In "See You Again Yesterday", David and Hugh had met through a mutual friend in Manhattan. Hugh had a house in Normandy and they both decided to go there for vacation. France wasn't everything David thought it would be. David slowly began to learn a few words in French too.
2. In the chapter "Me Talk Pretty One Day", David (now 41) went to Paris and took a class teaching him what subject?

Answer: French

The first day of class, David was quite intimidated because all the other students knew excellent French and were younger than he was. His teacher wasn't exactly the kindest teacher there. She continued to belittle people throughout the month and she even expressed her hatred for David.
3. In "Jesus Shaves", what was the topic that was being discussed in David's class?

Answer: French holidays

The teacher was testing the students to see if they knew their French holidays. When asked who brings in chocolates during Easter, David said it was a rabbit but the teacher corrected him saying, the French version was a bell that flies in from Rome.
David: "It's like saying that come Christmas, a magic dustpan flies in from the North Pole, led by eight flying cinder blocks."
4. David said people should read books rather than buying them on tapes and listening to them.

Answer: False

According to "The Tapeworm Is In", David started his life off in Paris by listening to American books on tape.
David: "Often, these books I would never have sat down and read."
5. According to David, there are two kinds of French spoken by Americans. What are the two kinds called?

Answer: easy and hard

In "Make That A Double", David said the hard kind involved conjugation of wily verbs and the science of placing them alongside various other words. For example, "I go him say good afternoon".
The easy kind amounts to screaming English at the top of your lungs, much the same way you'd shout at a deaf person. For example, "BRING ME A STEAK."
6. Hugh talked to David about his little journey through which continent?

Answer: Africa

In "Remembering My Childhood On The Continent Of Africa", Hugh had lived in Ethiopia during his childhood and then moved to America when he was older. David envied Hugh because of the fact that Hugh got to go to an Ethiopian slaughterhouse for a field trip while David went to "one of those preserved, brick buildings".
7. In chapter "21 Down", what does David talk about?

Answer: "New York Times" crossword puzzles

Throughout this chapter, David tested his skills with crossword puzzles. He wanted to show Hugh that he was just as intelligent as him.
8. In "The City of Light In The Dark", David thought French theatres were better than American theatres.

Answer: True

David said he spent more time in French movie theatres then outside, touring France. People said he could do that back home but David felt a different experience watching American movies in French theatres.
David: "..all movies are shown in their orginal English with French subtitles. Someone might say, 'Get your fat butt out of here before I do something I regret,' and the screen will read, 'Leave.'"
9. What was one of the drawbacks for an American living in Paris?

Answer: being referred to as an "ex-pat"

David said that one of the drawbacks was being referred to as an expatriate or an "ex-pat".
David: "It is implied that anything might take you to London or Saint Kitts, but if you live in Paris, it must be because you hate the United States."
10. David and Hugh took a subway train to a clothing shop in Paris. Since it was so crowded, Hugh and David got separated. David saw these two tourists from America and overheard their conversation about him. According to Martin (one of the tourists), what was David planning to do to them?

Answer: rob them

Martin, one of the tourists, thought David was a subway thief who would steal the purse from the other tourist, Martin's wife. They didn't know David could understand them and David just stood there loathing every minute of their conversation about him.
David: "...if I said something at this point, he probably would have apologized, and I wasn't interested in that...I just wanted to continue hating them."
I loved this chapter.
11. In one chapter, David saw a startling event at a carnival in France. What was so startling?

Answer: he almost saw a girl get killed

David and his boyfriend Hugh had gone to a carnival and saw a girl strapped to a seat of rollercoaster that had stopped mid-way on a loop. She was dangling upside-down. David thought this would've been the mother of all dinner-time stories if he saw the event through. After a while, help came and on-lookers began to get bored so they left the scene, as well as David and Hugh.
12. In "Smart Guy", David talked about IQ's and his job at 25, cleaning up construction sites in Raleigh. His co-worker, Reggie, and he were talking about their IQ's. What IQ did Reggie give David?

Answer: 72

Reggie: "I'd place you around a seventy-two, tops."
David: "What does that mean?"
Reggie: "It means I hope you like pushing that broom."
David: "What does THAT mean?"
13. In "The Late Show", David talked about jobs he fantasized about having and gave himself alternate personalities. What job did David not talk about becoming?

Answer: an astronaut

David talked about becoming a scientist working in his underground lab, creating serums. Then he went on and talked about being a heavyweight boxer who was the reigning champion. He also said he imagined becoming a slighty chubby intern for the White House who has had an affair with the President of the United States.
14. David, his father, and David's friend (Maja) were eating at a restaurant in Paris. Lou, his father said he was hungry and started chewing on some thing in his suitcase, thinking it was cookies. In actuality, what was it?

Answer: his cap

Lou: "So, I found this brown something-or-other in my suitcase, and I started chewing on it, thinking that maybe it was part of a cookie."
Maja: "Had you packed any cookies?"
Lou: "Not that I know of, but the that's not the point."
David: "So you found this thing in your suitcase, and your first instinct was to put it in your mouth?"
Lou: "Well, yes. Sure I did. But the thing is I must haved chewed on that thing for a good five mintues, until i realized I was eating the brim of my cap. A piece must have broken off during the flight."
Maja: "So you literally ate your hat."
Lou: "Well, not the whole thing. I stopped after the first few bites."
15. Last question, David was raised in North Carolina but was born in ______ _______.
