Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My love of history came from books I read as a child. One that I have never forgotten was made, in 2011, into a film called "The Eagle" Do you know know the title of the original book?

Answer: The Eagle of the Ninth

This exciting historical novel written by Rosemary Sutcliff was first published in 1954. It was set in Britain at the time of the Roman occupation and told the story of a young Roman officer, Marcus Aquila, who set out to investigate the disappearance of his father whose entire legion, the Ninth, went missing while serving in the north.

He found that the legion had been wiped out but was able to bring back the bronze eagle which had been the Ninth's standard.
2. One of my favourite writers of historical fiction is Philippa Gregory. Which of these books did she NOT write?

Answer: Daughter of Time

Philippa Gregory was born in Kenya in 1954. She has a doctorate in English literature, has taught at several universities and became a Fellow of Kingston University in 1994. She does extensive research for her books and while some readers do not agree with her interpretations of various characters and events they are based on her reading of primary and secondary sources. They also provide an impetus to go to non-fiction books and papers and do your own study.

Gregory is mainly interested in writing about women in history. "Daughter of Time" is about Richard III and was written by Josephine Tey.
3. I remember buying, with my first pay packet, a black comedy set in the capital of an island republic in the Caribbean. Do you know its name?

Answer: Our Man in Havana

While Graham Greene was an MI6 agent during WWII he found out about a German operative in Portugal who ran fictitious agents and pocketed the funds allocated for them. He used this as the basis for his plot in "Our Man in Havana". In this novel a vacuum cleaner salesman was recruited to spy for the British government and as he had no idea how to go about it he wrote fake reports, invented agents and sent drawings of vacuum cleaner parts to London claiming that they were secret weapons. "Our Man in Havana", probably the best known of Greene's books, was published in 1958.

His works have not only been well regarded in literary circles but have also enjoyed widespread popularity.
4. One of my favourite books has been made into a movie starring Katherine Heigl. Which author wrote "One For the Money"?

Answer: Janet Evanovich

Janet Evanovich is an American writer who authored several romance books, some under the pen name Steffie Hall. She gained fame after she began the Stephanie Plum series about a lingerie buyer turned barely competent bounty hunter. Janet has also penned the "Diesel" series and the "Barnaby" series of books.

The movie "One for the Money" premiered in January 2012 and was directed by Julie Ann Robinson.
5. Another book I love is a hilarious tale by Sue Townsend in which the British royal family have been stripped of their powers and sent to live on a housing estate. What is the name of this irreverent comedy?

Answer: The Queen and I

In Townsend's 1992 novel "The Queen and I", the Republican Party wins the election and make good on their campaign promise to dismantle the monarchy. The royal family is then sent to a housing estate "Hellebore Close" which one of the locals has vandalised so it reads "Hell Close".

A fitting description as we are soon to find out, as the royal family implodes. Charles becomes a criminal, Prince Philip loses his marbles, William and Harry turn into hooligans and even the Queen's favourite corgi becomes feral.
6. Lisa Genova's bestselling novel about a Harvard professor with Alzheimer's has a permanent place on my bookshelf. What is the title of this 2007 novel?

Answer: Still Alice

Genova self published her novel "Still Alice" after failing to find a publisher. Eventually it was picked up by Simon & Schuster and published in 2007. The novel debuted at number five on the New York Times Bestseller list and won the 2008 Bronte award for best love story in North America.
7. I have read this classic book several times and still enjoy it. The story is set in Maycomb, Alabama, and includes a housekeeper named Calpurnia and the trial of a man called Tom Robinson. Do you know its title?

Answer: To Kill a Mockingbird

What draws me back to this book is its mature treatment of the themes of race, injustice, loss of innocence and compassion. When a black man is falsely accused of rape, Atticus Finch, the father of the narrator, Scout, defends him in court but he is convicted. He is shot trying to escape. Later events bring about consequences that enable the characters to develop a better understanding of themselves and how they perceive others.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" was first published in 1960. It has won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961 and has since been studied in schools and colleges all over the English speaking world.
8. The New York Times Book Review said, "Umberto Eco has written a novel and it has become a literary event". About which book, which was made into a film starring Sean Connery, was this comment made?

Answer: The Name of the Rose

"The Name of the Rose" was first published in English in 1983. It immediately received accolades, became a best seller and gained a completely unexpected readership, particularly as it discussed medieval philosophy and was scattered with Latin phrases.

It concerns the story of a Franciscan monk who is charged with investigating a series of brutal murders in a Benedictine monastery. Against the background of the Inquisition we meet a well-drawn series of characters set in a convincingly cold and eerie castle, tied together in a very satisfying plot.
9. One of my favourite stories is a tale of a boy who is accused of murder, branded a cop-killer and the subject of a massive man hunt. Trouble is: he's only 12. He's also innocent. What is the title of John Gilstrap's 1996 novel?

Answer: Nathan's Run

John Gilstrap is a New York Times bestselling author who previously worked as a volunteer fireman, explosives and hazardous waste disposal expert and has a degree in American History and a Master of Science: Safety Engineering.

"Nathan's Run" is Gilstrap's first published novel and has been translated and published in over 20 countries.
10. One book that I will never part with took the literary world by storm. What was the name of the bestselling novel that featured "The Vitruvian Man", murder in the Louvre Museum, conspiracy theories in the church and the Priory of Sion?

Answer: The Da Vinci Code

"The Da Vinci Code" is a 2003 mystery novel by Dan Brown and follows Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu as they investigate the murder of Louvre curator and Priory of Sion Grand Master Jacques Saunière.

On its release the book was denounced by the Catholics as an attack on the church. It was also criticised for many historical and scientific inaccuracies. Despite this, the novel had sold over 80 million copies by the end of 2009 and had been made into a movie starring Tom Hanks.
