Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The newest resident to Midnight was a man named Manfred Bernardo. What sort of special ability did he claim to have?

Answer: He was psychic

The first sentence of the book stated that you might pass through Midnight without noticing it. It was a small town with a Gas N Go, Home Cookin' Restaurant, a magic shop, Antique Gallery and Nail Salon, and a pawnshop. The fictional locale was said to be about ten minutes from the actual town of Davy, Texas (which became New Davy in the 1980s).

Manfred was a young man who ran an online psychic business. He'd inherited his psychic abilities, though they were not always "on", and some of his online business was a bit of a sham. He first appeared in 2006, in Charlaine's "Harper Connelly" series.

The three incorrect choices reflect characters from three Stephen King stories.
2. When Manfred arrived in town, there was already a mystery afoot. What was the name of the young woman who had disappeared mysteriously?

Answer: Aubrey

Aubrey Hamilton was the girlfriend of Bobo, the local pawnshop owner. She'd vanished one day without explanation, leaving Bobo confused and heartbroken. It wasn't long before her body was discovered during a social gathering. Bobo was initially a suspect, but there was no evidence tying him to the crime.

He'd been out of town when she disappeared, and was visibly saddened by her death. She had not gained many friends during her time in Midnight, so there were several possibilities on who may have killed her.
3. Midnight had a resident witch named Fiji Cavanaugh. What was the name of Fiji's very interesting cat?

Answer: Mr. Snuggly

Mr. Snuggly was a highly observant and precocious pet to Fiji. He could even speak English. He was what is commonly known as a "familiar".

Pixel was from the book "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls" by Robert A. Heinlein (1985), Crookshanks was Hermione's cat in the "Harry Potter" book series, and Tao was the Siamese from "The Incredible Journey" by author Sheila Burnford (1961).
4. Price Eggleston was part of an isolationist group called Men of Liberty.

Answer: True

It was said early on that Price and the Men of Liberty (aka MOL) believed Bobo's racist grandfather had left a cache of weapons hidden away. Bobo claimed to have no such knowledge of any weapons. After her body was discovered, Bobo found out that much of Aubrey's story to him was a lie.

She had been married to one of these Men of Liberty extremists, though he'd died in a bank robbery. She'd been sent in to spy on Bobo, but was thought to have possibly been killed when she refused to report on him any longer. Price seemed to be the head honcho of the MOL in the Davy area of Texas.
5. Which person in Midnight was a vampire who dated back to the early 1800s?

Answer: Lemuel

Lemuel worked for Bobo at the pawnshop, but only at night. He could drink blood or drain energy to feed, and even used Manfred as a food source by siphoning off some of his energy. He had some kind of relationship with the mysterious Olivia (which Manfred swore was not her real name).
6. When Fiji was kidnapped by Price, what method did she use to get away from him and his family?

Answer: Froze them

While being bound and unable to speak inside his truck, Fiji was able to make Price think he had a snake near his feet. He jumped out and then battled the imaginary creature. But, being in pain and unable to use her hands had her at a mystical disadvantage. Price was able to get Fiji to his parents' property, where they encountered his mom and dad.

They weren't happy to see a white woman being treated the way Fiji had been treated by Price. So, Mamie Eggleston made her son release Fiji's hands. Sadly, when his parents realized she intended to call the police against their son, they were not ready to take her side. So, Fiji used her witch powers to freeze them all, one by one.

Then she ran for the highway, which led her to her friends on their way to save her.

It was actually her familiar, Mr. Snuggly, who led them all to her. The family thawed out, as Fiji and her friends were told indirectly, but we never knew for sure how long that took.
7. Who confessed to the murder of Bobo's girlfriend?

Answer: Connor Lovell

After Fiji, Bobo, Rev, Manfred, and the rest were told that Aubrey had been killed by a vehicle, they started adding it all up. Young Connor Lovell had been driving the old truck that ran her over. So, they left the pawnshop and walked over to the Gas N Go to confront the idea.

When they began to explain to Shawn Lovell how it all added up, it was Creek who supported the idea. Connor gleefully admitted killing his sister's dog that day, which they drove over to the Rev (Emilio Sheehan) to be buried in the pet cemetery.

Afterward, Creek took a walk and Connor was alone in the truck. He stopped to offer Aubrey a ride, and she teased him about going to the creek. He followed her in the truck as she walked, and eventually ran her over. He admitted to all of this happily.

It was clear to everyone that Connor was a sociopath.
8. After a bit of a debate, who stepped in and killed the murderer of Bobo's girlfriend?

Answer: Lemuel

Connor was dangerous. He freely admitted that he had a need to kill, and what was the harm in killing animals? Sadly, he'd gone past that compulsion and killed Aubrey, and then tried to frame Bobo with a gun from the pawnshop. They all debated on how to deal with Connor, who'd previously murdered his neighbor Mrs. Ames.

He'd gone into therapy for that murder and the police had never charged him. Now, it was a matter of public safety. Connor had to be dealt with, and Shawn was not able to give the okay to have his son killed. So, Lemuel made the choice for him, and snapped Connor's neck.
9. Did Bobo reveal to his friends his grandfather's secret cache of weapons?

Answer: Yes

After Bobo came to Midnight to run the pawnshop, he'd discovered a secret room hidden inside the store. He moved his grandfather's weapons there, but was reluctant to tell anyone about them. Finally, after what happened with Aubrey and Connor, he decided to show them all. His friends had mixed emotions about the secret, but it was fair to say none would share this secret with strangers.
10. Who called Manfred and revealed he or she was safe, somewhere up north?

Answer: Creek

Shawn and Creek Lovell left town after Connor's death. Shawn left behind an explanation of what happen for the cop Arthur Smith, without mention of Connor's death. He included a letter "from" Connor, who claimed to have run away after what he'd done to Aubrey. Creek called Manfred a day or two later, saying they were okay up north.

She said it was taking some adjusting to get used to the cold. She told Manfred she'd call him later, but his instinct told him he would not ever hear from her again.
