Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where are Amy and Jacky when they first hear Reverend Mather speaking to his deceased grandfather?

Answer: On the widow's walk of Lawson Peabody School for Girls

Jacky and Amy lie down so that he won't be able to see their silhouettes but they'll still be able to hear.
2. Fill in the blank: Reverend Mather thinks Jacky's tattoo is a _________.

Answer: pitchfork

Jacky learns he knows about her tattoo ("the vile Dobbs" was the one that told him about it) the first night she goes out to haunt him. All she does that night is say, "Please, Sir, don't..." like she imagines Janey Porter saying it.
3. What is the name of the man who has become a protector to Jacky while she works at the Pig and Whistle?

Answer: John Thomas

John Thomas hears Jacky playing "The Mountains of Morn" in the street and says, "Luffly, Miss. Just luffly, but could it be that you'll play sumthin' more merry for poor John Thomas and 'is mates what had had enough of sadness and woe and hard times?"
4. When Gully MacFarland is taken by a press gang, what does Jacky pretend to be to try and save him?

Answer: His daughter

Jacky leaps off Gretchen's back and runs up the gangway, falls on her knees in front of the Captain and cries, "Oh, Captain, please, if you take our poor Papa all us girls will starve for sure, Mamma being sick and all, and poor Baby Agnes, oh, Sir, what will become of poor, poor Baby Agnes?" But no one believes her because Gully doesn't have a family.
5. Who carves the initials JF + JF on the foretop of the Dolphin?

Answer: Jaimy

Jaimy carves his and Jacky's initials into the foretop when he's leaving the Dolphin, I guess because that is where they met.
6. On which holiday does the whole town-Jacky included, of course-party in the streets?

Answer: Pope's Day

This is when Henry first meets Sylvie, and when Davy appears, he meets Annie.
7. How many tattoos (including the Brotherhood's anchor) does Davy have by the time Jacky meets him in Boston?

Answer: You never know for sure

Davy doesn't say how many tattoos he has, but when Jacky tells him to "put your hand on your tattoo" so he can swear to deliver the letter to Jaimy, he says (jokingly or not) "Which one?"
8. Which of the following does Mistress know about Jacky?

Answer: That Jacky has been tutoring Rebecca Adams

Mistress calls Jacky to her office after finding her learning French from Monsieur Bissell, even though she is no longer a student. "You see," Mistress says, "I know everything about my school. Everything. For instance, I know that you have continued your studies, when, as a serving girl, you were not expected to do so. And further more I know you have been tutoring young Rebecca Adams." If Mistress knows about Jacky's performances at the Pig and Whistle, she does not mention it.
9. What three colors is the riding habit Amy gives Jacky at Christmas?

Answer: Maroon, light gray, and deep green

Jacky gives Colonel and Mrs. Trevelyne a miniature portrait of Amy and she gives Amy a miniature of Ezra Pickering. Jacky receives one of Amy's old riding habits (even though she says it is too much at first) from Amy, and a Spanish mantilla of black lace from Randall.
10. What does Jacky make Colonel Trevelyne promise, before she'll "cure" Pete Jarvis?

Answer: To never again bet or wager on anything

The jockey who was going to ride the Sheik in the big race had a fever, so Jacky wore his clothes and took his place while pretending she'd cured him with magic from the Caribbean.
11. Is the thigh Jacky is whipped on the left one?

Answer: No

The other riders box Jacky and the Sheik in, and Muir whips Jacky on the leg. When she goes back to where Pete is, Jacky in turn whips him on his right leg so that there will be an appropriate injury.
12. Which officer has to sing a few verses of the song "Jackaroe"?

Answer: Midshipman Padget

When it is discovered that Jacky is indeed "Bloody Jacky Faber," Captain Humphries orders Midshipman Padget to sing a few verses of the song about her. Jacky can tell Padget is embarrassed, but knows that he would obey even if the Captain told him to "drop his breeches and waddle around the table clucking like a chicken." "Jackaroe" sounds like "The Ship Boy's Lament," only faster and done in a major key instead of a minor. Jacky says she thinks she can hear Liam Delaney's hand in it.
13. What is the name of the captain who decides not to flog Davy for delivering Jacky's letter?

Answer: Captain Fishburne

Davy does not stay where he is supposed to in order to hand Jaimy the letter from Jacky, and earns a hard blow across the face in return. Jaimy knows he'll be flogged later and steps up asking that he not be beaten because he was only delivering a letter he swore to deliver to Jaimy's hand alone.
14. True or false, the men Reverend Mather hires to catch Jacky kill Millie.

Answer: False

Jacky only thinks they killed Millie. Millie actually ends up saving Jacky by scratching on the door (scaring the preacher) and barking, which alerts Jacky's friends.
15. What is Mistress trying to save while the school is burning down?

Answer: The embroideries

Mistress is the only one left in the school, and Jacky and John Thomas go after her to save her. When they reach her, Mistress seems to be going a bit mad from shock.
