Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Matthew Lewis's gothic novel 'The Monk' how does Ambrosio learn that the girl he raped and killed was his own sister?

Answer: He summons up a devil who reveals it to him

Ambrosio summons the devil to help him escape from the torture of the Spanish Inquisition, but he is in two minds whether the bargain Lucifer offers him is a good deal. Ambrosio is shown the true extent of his crimes and is therefore convinced that God will never forgive him and that he may as well sell his soul to the devil.
2. 'The War of Don Emanuel's Nether Parts', 'The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman' and 'Senor Vivo and the Coco Lord' are a South American trilogy by which author?

Answer: Louis de Bernieres

Although not written by a South American author, this trilogy brilliantly captures the magical realism style of authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez. De Bernieres adds a very individual and humorous perspective.
3. Cormac McCarthy mostly writes books set where?

Answer: The American South

'All the Pretty Horses' was made into a film starring Penelope Cruz and Matt Damon. It is the first book of his 'Border Trilogy' that also includes 'The Crossing' and 'Cities of the Plain'.
4. Which Shakespeare play features a mischievous fairy named Puck?

Answer: A Midsummer Night's Dream

Puck calls himself 'a merry wanderer of the night' who 'jests to Oberon'. Oberon and Titania are the King and Queen of the Fairies.
5. George Orwell wrote 1984 in what year?

Answer: 1948

Unlike Huxley's 'Brave New World' this futuristic novel was written not long after World War II, which goes some way to explain the bleak vision it predicts. The reality TV show 'Big Brother' takes its name from the 'organisation', Big Brother, that dominates '1984' watching everything people do and so robbing them of their freedom.
6. Which Dickens character has a mysterious benefactor named Magwitch?

Answer: Philip Pirrip

Philip (Pip) helps Magwitch free himself from the chains he was shackled in after escaping from prison. Pip also gives him food and never tells about the escape. Magwitch subsequently goes on to make a success of his life and so becomes Pip's secret benefactor. When Pip discovers this, he is initially ashamed to have been receiving money from a criminal.
7. How does the prostitute, Marguerite, die in 'The Lady of the Camellias' by Alexandre Dumas?

Answer: Consumption

Maguerite always has fresh white camellias delivered to her - except for one week each month when she has red camellias. The stage version of this book is called 'Camille'.
8. In the Kate Atkinson novel 'Behind the Scenes at the Museum', above what kind of shop do the family live?

Answer: Pet

When the house burns down the pet shop is destroyed also - and most of the animals inside. The family go on to open up a pharmacy.
9. In which of the character's stories from 'The Canterbury Tales' do we meet Chanticleer and his wife Pertelote?

Answer: The Nun's Priest

Chaunticleer is a cockeral, Pertelote is one of his seven hen wives - his favourite. Chaunticleer has a dream that he will be attacked by a 'beast' but Pertelote dismisses his visions as the result of indigestion. Chaunticleer maintains that dreams are prophesies of the future. He is proved correct when he is in fact attacked by a fox.
10. Paul Gallico's beautiful novella 'The Snow Goose' takes place before and during which war?

Answer: World War II

The book's climax comes when the deformed and reclusive John hears the call for all the 'little boats' to go out to Dunkirk and help the soldiers stranded there. The snow goose circles the little dinghy as John saves many men - unfortunately he dies doing it; the snow goose returns to Frith and she realises that John will never come back.
