Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scene of Ian Fleming's "Moonraker", where do we find James Bond?

Answer: in the shooting range beneath headquarters

Bond and the 'instructor' are having a quick draw silhouette shooting contest as part of Bond's regular practice. The instructor wins this particular shootout much to the disbelief of Bond.

As Bond walks dejectedly to the elevator, he is wondering how to find the extra split second advantage to win the next contest.

The instructor thought about telling Bond he is the best shot in the service, but he knows only M can have that information.
2. In the novel "Moonraker", the reader gets a glimpse of the office life of a 00 agent in Her Majesties' Secret Service. What is his secretary's name?

Answer: Loelia Ponsonby

Although not mentioned in many stories, Miss Ponsonby is his secretary in the early books. Miss Ponsonby worries constantly about the three members of the 00 section while they are abroad.

Moneypenny is M's secretary.
3. Bond's secretary tells him a bit of office gossip at the beginning of the "Moonraker" novel. "008's gotten out. He's in Berlin resting." This makes Bond also wonder what became of 0011, who vanished two months earlier into the "Dirty Half-mile" of which Asian city?

Answer: Singapore

Fleming emphasizes the danger to his 00 agents by these few remarks. To Bond, 'resting' means 008 is likely in bad shape. The next day he hears that 008 is in shock, which also has an unhealthy sound to it. At the end of the book, however, 008 is said to be on his way home.

The fate of 0011 is never resolved.
4. In Ian Fleming's "Moonraker", we also get some insight into James Bond's domestic life. We find his salary is 1500 pounds, with another 500 tax free, his evenings are spent playing cards or making love 'with rather cold passion' to one of three similarly-disposed women, and he plays golf on weekends. We also find he has a small flat off the Kings Road with an elderly Scottish housekeeper who becomes more prominent in later stories. What is her name?

Answer: May

Though never a well-used character, May is found to be devoted to Bond's overall well being. In the novel 'From Russia With Love', May has taken pains to care for Tiffany Case and is suspicious of a 'televeesion' salesman from a union which has Communist ties.

Without much of a domestic life, May is one constant Bond can count on when he is at home.
5. During the "Moonraker" story, James Bond is in the midst of reading up on such diverse topics as Japanese murder drugs, hiding places on German trains and the methods of SMERSH, when he is summoned to M's office. Bond's spirits go down when M refers to him as James, not 007. Why?

Answer: It usually means something personal rather than a case

James Bond thrives on action. Being referred to as James is disappointing to him, as he wants to be away from the office. This is not the only instance of M referring to Bond by his Christian name, and in all cases it is a personal rather than official summons.
6. In the novel "Moonraker", M asks James Bond what he knows about Sir Hugo Drax. Bond tells M what he knows: the man suffered amnesia after a bombing during WWII where he lost half his face; then he later cornered the world market in a certain type of ore with a high melting point, from which he made his fortune and became an English hero, among other things. What rare ore was this?

Answer: Columbite

Sir Hugo Drax is a very popular public figure in England. He is now using his vast fortune and knowledge of metals to build the Moonraker, a rocket designed to carry atomic weapons and keep England ahead of Russia during the cold war.

Columbite is the metal used in the Moonraker to withstand high temperatures.
7. When James Bond finished telling M what he knew of Sir Hugo Drax (to M's satisfaction), M then mentioned a flaw in Drax's character which could bring this well-liked public man down. What did M say?

Answer: he cheats at cards

A public scandal like this could be a great embarrassment to Drax, and the Moonraker project was too valuable to take chances on. Since Bond had been successful on two gambling cases, M wanted him to watch Drax play bridge in a effort to find out how he was cheating. Always interested in cards, Bond was excited about the prospect.
8. In the novel "Moonraker", Ian Fleming describes in detail a very lavish private London club of which M is a member. Drax also belongs to this club, which is mentioned in other Bond novels. What is the name of the club?

Answer: Blades

Although a fictional club, it is likely the merging of several other clubs Fleming had attended.

Bond is repulsed by Sir Hugo Drax in many ways: he has terrible manners, the skin on the right side of his face was poorly grafted after the explosion, he bites his nails to the quick and chain smokes, among other things. He can only surmise that the shock of the bombing and amnesia coupled with his burning desire to build the Moonraker is the reason for Drax's habits.
9. While watching Sir Hugo Drax playing bridge in the "Moonraker" novel, James Bond notices Drax take a cigarette case out of his pocket to get a cigarette. Another highly polished silver case lies directly in front of him. Bond has discovered Drax's method of cheating. What does he call it?

Answer: a shiner

By dealing over the shiny case which acts as a mirror, Drax is memorizing the cards as he deals - he knows the cards only on his deal, but one in four hands gives him a great advantage.

When M and Bond play against Drax and his partner Meyer, Bond drinks heavily and acts drunk. Very high stakes follow and when the last hand is played, Bond switches decks with one he had stacked earlier. The result is a crushing defeat for Drax, who would in the future likely play a clean game. This is much to the liking of M and Blades Chairman Lord Basildon, who want to avoid a scandal for Drax.

Drax knows they are onto him, but he pays politely. As he leaves he has a few words of advice for Bond: "I should spend the money quickly, Commander Bond."
10. In the Ian Fleming novel "Moonraker", James Bond has a hangover after his night at Blades. M called him into his office. "You look pretty dreadful, 007." Bond knew it was business this time. Something had happened at Drax's plant overnight. What did M say had happened?

Answer: a murder-suicide

Two men on the Moonraker team were dead. According to M, a German called Bartsch walked up to an Englishman called Tallon and said "I love Gala Brand. You shall not have her." He then shot Tallon and then killed himself.

Tallon and Gala Brand were working through Scotland Yard on the Moonraker project, Tallon checking security and Gala undercover. They were the only English workers on the project. The rest of the team consisted of Germans who Drax had brought to England after the war.

Another agent was now needed to fill Tallon's shoes for the last few days before the Moonraker launch. Bond was chosen.
11. James Bond stopped by the scene of the previous night's crime for a drink before going to see Sir Hugo Drax at the Moonraker project. He questioned the barkeeper about the shooting. The barkeeper added one thing to what M had told Bond. It seemed that before putting the gun in his mouth, Bartsch had stood to attention, raised one hand in salute and said one word. What did he say?

Answer: Heil!

This brought suspicion to Bond's mind. WWII was still relatively fresh in people's memories and the knowledge that all of Drax's workers were German put a bad taste in Bond's mouth.
12. After his polite reception by Drax at the Moonraker launch site, James Bond is introduced to Dr. Walter, the brains behind the Moonraker, and Krebs, the oily personal aide to Drax. Upon being shown around the facility, Bond notices that all the German workers have something in common. What is it?

Answer: shaved heads and moustaches

Something strikes Bond as odd about the moustaches, adding a growing hint of doubt to the operation. Each man has a different type of moustache, and they are all very well tended.

He also notes that they are vary hard workers, apparently devoted to the success of the Moonraker.

Later, during his 'life story' Drax mentions the moustaches. "You smelled a mouse when you should have smelled a rat." According to Drax, even your own mother wouldn't recognize you if your head were shaved and you grew a moustache.
13. In Ian Fleming's "Moonraker", James Bond was given the late inspector Tallon's room. Searching his filing cabinet, he ffound a chart of the area and nearby sea. After powdering the chart, he saw two sets of fingerprints (Tallon's and Krebs') which proved Krebs had been snooping. The powder also elevated Bond's suspicion for another reason. What else was there that the powder brought out?

Answer: lines on the chart

The nearly invisible lines intersected in the English Channel. After investigating the buildings and finding a perfect line of sight from the roof to the channel, Bond wondered if Tallon might have heard or seen something that got him killed.
14. Gala Brand was the Scotland Yard plant in the Moonraker project. Other than secretary to Drax, what job was solely hers?

Answer: computing the gyro settings for launch

The dead Tallon and Gala Brand were security sent from Scotland Yard to oversee the Moonraker operation for the British government. Russia would only be too happy to sabotage the rocket if given a chance.

Gala Brand took the daily weather reports and calculated bearings to set the gyros which would steer the Moonraker to its North Sea destination. It irritated her to no end when she gave the settings to Drax and watched him and Dr. Walter refigure them before putting them in a small notebook which Drax carried in his hip pocket.
15. Sir Hugo Drax had chosen a site for the construction and launch of his Moonraker which is an English landmark. Located on the southern coast of England, what was this famous landmark?

Answer: The white cliffs of Dover

The cliffs are white because they are made of chalk. Gala and Bond walked along the beach one day to make sure security was good below the cliffs and to talk freely about their suspicions, which centered mostly on Drax's aide Krebs. Bond also wanted to check the depth of water at the small jetty Drax had built. They swam out a small distance and found it more than deep enough to accomodate a ship or submarine.

As they lay under the cliff to dry after their swim, a large chunk of the chalk cliff broke loose and nearly buried them. Just before the landslide, Bond had seen a wisp of black smoke on the cliff and knew an explosion had caused the slide.
16. After James Bond and Gala Brand's narrow escape in the landslide, they cleaned up and returned to Drax's headquarters. They entered the dining room as Drax, Dr. Walter and Krebs were eating. The trio reacted with surprise when the door opened, but Bond's suspicious mind took in one thing which stayed with him well into the night. What was it?

Answer: The table was only set for three

All were true; the table set for three meant they weren't expecting Bond and Gala for dinner.

All of these small straws were adding up to a haystack, but there was nothing concrete which could mean sabotage for the Moonraker launch.
17. The day before the Moonraker launch, Drax, Gala Brand and Krebs drove to London. Gala, still determined to find out why her figures for the gyro settings weren't accepted, finally saw her chance and did what?

Answer: stole Drax's notebook

She took it into a restroom and checked the figures, which were ninety degrees off of what she had submitted. But before she could return the notebook secretly to Drax's pocket, Krebs caught her. She was roughly subdued.

While tied in a room near Buckingham palace, she slowly realized the truth. Her figures had been right all along. Drax's figures would land the rocket in the middle of London. The room she was in had the devices capable of making sure it did. And she also knew the rocket was capable of carrying an atomic warhead.

In the meantime Bond had driven to London to meet with M who agreed with Bond's suspicions that something wasn't right with the Moonraker project.

Tailing Drax, Bond saw Gala being manhandled into Drax's car as they returned to the Moonraker launch site.
18. Racing back to the Moonraker site with Gala Brand tied in the back seat, Drax and Krebs see Bond's Bentley in pursuit. They slow behind a truck on a hill, where Krebs climbs out and cuts the truck's cargo loose. What is the cargo?

Answer: rolls of newsprint

Bond in his speeding Bentley can't stop, and crashes. Drax returns and gets the unconscious Bond into his car.

Upon returning to the Moonraker site, Bond and Gala are tied to chairs in Drax's office, where Krebs brings a blowtorch in for the interrogation.
19. During the "Moonraker" novel, James Bond and Gala Brand are tied to chairs in Drax's office and forced to listen to Drax's story of his life. The highlight of his life, apparently, was when the Germans stormed enemy lines in the Ardennes during December 1944 with captured American tanks and uniforms. What is the allied version of this battle called?

Answer: Battle of the Bulge

Drax and his band of commandos went to ground behind enemy lines in the captured uniforms. They put into action a plan to blow up a British camp. Drax met with an accident while in British uniform and was brought semiconcious to the camp just as the bomb exploded. This is where he was so badly injured. From here on he faked amnesia until he found an acceptable identity to assume.

Theft, murder and his knowledge of metals were about to make his dreams of revenge come true.
20. During "Moonraker", Drax tells Bond and Gala what they had secretly feared: the reason Tallon was killed was that he saw or heard something at sea that night, called headquarters, and was overheard by Krebs. Although Tallon wasn't sure what the object was, Drax filled them in. What was it?

Answer: a Russian submarine

Although Tallon didn't know what he saw, he was suspicious enough to contact Scotland Yard.

Drax then confirmed the sub delivered an atomic warhead, which was in the nose of the Moonraker. He also said that the Moonraker team would leave on the sub just after the launch, bound for Russia.
21. In "Moonraker", Krebs had a blowtorch ready to 'interrogate' Bond and Gala. But Bond answered Drax's questions and Krebs left dejectedly. As Drax told his life story, he chain smoked. With his mind always on escape, Bond insulted Sir Hugo Drax which made him so angry that he lost his temper and beat Bond mercilessly, then stormed out of the room. Why did he make him so mad?

Answer: so he would forget his lighter

With Drax gone, Bond wiggled his chair over to the desk and used the lighter to restart the torch. Then he burnt the cords holding Gala and soon they were free. Bond did all of this with his teeth.

They then tried to make it look as if they attempted escape through the huge Moonraker exhaust outlet and failed, falling to their death. But Drax was not so easily fooled. When he found them gone, he suspected they were hiding in one of the many ventilation ducts high in the wall.
22. In "Moonraker", James Bond and Gala Brand have escaped Drax's office. They hide in one of many ventilator shafts designed for the escape of exhaust during the launch of the Moonraker. But Drax suspects their whereabouts. What does he do to try to flush them out?

Answer: he blasts pressurized steam into each shaft

The steam blisters their feet and ankles, but they both keep quiet. When the team leaves prior to launch, Bond tells Gala his idea: When the explosive fumes are surrounding the Moonraker before launch, he will go light one last cigarette, knowing the explosion will destroy the Moonraker; the warhead will not explode.
23. After the Moonraker team had left the launch site and the countdown had begun, Bond decided to hide Gala and go light one last cigarette in the fumes, thereby destroying the rocket. But Gala came up with a better plan. What was it?

Answer: change the gyro settings back to the North Sea

Having changed the settings back to the North Sea (which Gala held in her memory) she and Bond went into the well-protected office of Drax and turned the shower on in the bathtub.

They could hear the BBC broadcast of the launch from a radio after they survived the heat of the rocket.
24. As James Bond and Gala Brand listened to the BBC account of the Moonraker launch from Drax's office, the report switched to the North Sea where the reporter noticed a strange object in the target zone of the Moonraker. It was the Russian sub in which Drax and his German engineers had left. What did it raise just before it submerged?

Answer: the Russian flag

The Moonraker came down just as the sub went under, and the resulting atomic explosion blew the sub back out of the water and sank the ships around the target area. It also breached some of the sea defences of The Netherlands and killed at least 200.

M told Bond the next day that the sub had been located on the bottom of the North Sea and a salvage crew was already en route. Drax's scheme had failed.
25. After the Moonraker affair, the Prime Minister wants James Bond and Gala Brand out of the country for awhile. Bond has plans for a long trip with Gala into France, and fantasizes about where they will go and what they will do. His hopes are dashed when he meets Gala at their appointed place of departure. What did Bond see that destroyed his fantasy?

Answer: her fiance

This is one of the few instances when Bond doesn't get the girl. As Fleming then said, "They turned away from each other and walked off into their different lives."

Although this story has suspense and action, James Bond works better as an international spy than the role of investigator he assumes in this book.
