Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tolkien's writings about the Second and Third Ages are, as usual, chiefly about Elves and Men. However, there is enough documentation of the deeds of one Dwarven clan during that period. Which one?

Answer: Longbeards

The Longbeards are otherwise known as Durin's Folk. They originally lived at the city of Khazad-dum under the Misty Mountains. At the Second Age, the splendor of Khazad-dum became renowned in the entire Westlands of Middle-Earth. The main source of its wealth was the metal known as Mithril.

At the year 1980 of the Third Age, the Dwarves accidentally awakened a Balrog of Morgoth, a demon of fire and shadow, which was felled by Istar Gandalf the Grey, whom the Dwarves call Tharkun, when the Fellowship of the Ring passed through the city. Khazad-dum was reclaimed by Dwarf king Durin VII.
2. At the Second Age, the Dwarves of Khazad-dum developed a friendship with the Elves living nearby and the two races jointly constructed the Doors of Durin. Who was the King of Khazad-dum when the gates were constructed?

Answer: Durin III

The Doors were situated near the Sirannon stream. They could open only if someone said the Elvish word for "friend", "mellon". The Doors were destroyed by the mysterious Watcher in the Water when the Fellowship of the Ring passed through Khazad-dum. The Watcher had occupied a nearby pool and had been awakened or irritated by the stones Boromir threwh at the pool.

It is possible that they were reconstructed when the Dwarves reoccupied their homeland.
3. The Dwarves of Khazad-dum developed a rare friendship with the Elves of Eregion, aka Hollin. But, who was the leader of those Elves?

Answer: Celebrimbor

Celebrimbor was the grandson of Feanor, who had initiated the Rebellion of the Noldor against the Valar. He was deceived by the Dark Lord Sauron, who was operating under the guise of Annatar, Lord of Gifts, into forging the Rings of Power. Celebrimbor was killed when Sauron sacked his kingdom and his impaled head was paraded before Sauron's orcish armies.
4. After the forging of the One Ring, the Dark Lord Sauron's power was reaching its zenith and he waged a bitter war against the Elves of Eriador, destroying Eregion and causing great damage to his enemies before retreating. What was the role of the Dwarves of Khazad-dum in that clash?

Answer: They assailed Sauron from behind, but were driven back.

Sauron's powerful attack against Eregion was completely successful. Eregion lay in waste and the Rings of Power which Sauron had forged with Celebrimbor were recovered by the Dark Lord. Only the three Elven rings, forged by Celebrimbor alone, were saved.

The Dwarves were driven back into Khazad-dum and shut the Doors of Durin, for Sauron could not assail them there. After bitter fighting and with the help of Numenor, Sauron was finally ejected from Eriador.
5. After his war with the Elves and the recovery of the lesser Rings of Power, Sauron redistributed them. Seven of them were given to the Dwarves. What was the effect of the Rings on the Dwarves?

Answer: They resisted Sauron, but their lust for gold became more.

The Dwarves were created by Aule to be strong and resistant to the corruptive influence of evil. Thus, they resisted Sauron, who sought to recapture the Seven Rings. Two he seized back quickly and four were eaten by dragons. Only the Ring of Thror, which was said to had been given by Celebrimbor to Durin III of Khazad-dum (which is unlikely, since Celebrimbor gave Sauron all lesser rings after being tortured), was kept by the Dwarves until the late Third Age.
6. The Second Age of Middle-Earth ended after the defeat of Sauron at the War of the Last Alliance. While it is known that Elves and Men formed the Alliance and they did the bulk of the fighting, we know something about the role of the Dwarves in that conflict. Which of the following sentences summarizes it?

Answer: Few Dwarves fought for either side, but none of the Longbeards seved Sauron.

It is said that, at the climactic Battle of Dagorlad, all living things were divided, apart from the Elves. We know that many Men fought for Sauron, but don't know how many (if any) Dwarves fought for him and, if they did, if it was done from their own free will.
7. After the end of the Second Age, the Dwarves of Khazad-dum greatly expanded their treasures. They mined even more deeply for one precious substance. Which one?

Answer: Mithril

Mithril was a metal resembling silver, which was sought after by all the races of Middle-Earth. Men called it "true-silver". The Hobbit Bilbo Baggins was given a coat of mithril by the Dwarf King Thorin II Oakenshield as a reward for his services at the Quest of Erebor. The coat was given by Bilbo to Frodo Baggins, when the latter embarked on his quest to destroy the One Ring.
Galvorn was a metal devised by Eol, the Dark Elf, which he used to make armor resistant to enemy weapons.
8. In Third Age 1980, the Dwarves awoke a nameless terror while mining in the depths of Khazad-dum. The monster, later revealed to be a Balrog of Morgoth, killed the king of Khazad-dum in 1980 and, one year later, his son and heir. Who were the two unfortunate kings?

Answer: Durin VI and Nain I

No tale tells us how the Balrog came in Khazad-dum. After the death of King Nain I, Khazad-dum was abandoned by the Dwarves and was renamed into Moria, the Black Pit. In TA 3018, when the Fellowship of the Ring passed through the deserted mines of Khazad-dum, they encountered the Balrog.

The wizard Gandalf the Grey dueled him on the Bridge of Khazad-dum. Gandalf repelled the Balrog's first attack using the Shield of Istari and broke the bridge with his staff, which was also shattered. However, the Balrog's whip was tangled around Gandalf's knees and they both fell into the abyss.

They fell into a lake that was so cold it almost froze Gandalf's heart. Afterwards, Gandalf pursued his opponent and they reached the top of Zirak-Zigil, aka Celebdil, where he finally killed the Balrog.
9. After the emergence of the Balrog and the slaying of two of their Kings, the Dwarves abandoned Khazad-dum and relocated to Erebor, the Lonely Mountain. Which King of Durin's Folk first established the Kingdom of Erebor?

Answer: Thrain I

Thrain I was also known as Thrain the Old. He was the son of Nain I. Thrain I was 47 years old when Nain I was killed and he died in 2190, making him 256 years old at the time of his death. Thus, Thrain I was the longest living of all Kings of Durin's Folk, apart from Durin the Deathless.
10. Two centuries after the Dwarves' relocation to Erebor, King Thorin I abandoned it and went with his people to the range of the Ered Mithrin. How does this name translate into English?

Answer: Grey Mountains

The Grey Mountains at the time of the Third Age were what had remained of the Iron Mountains after the War of Wrath. At the meeting point of the Grey Mountains and the Misty Mountains was Mount Gundabad, which was revered by the Dwarves, since Durin the Deathless awoke there. To the north of the Grey Mountains lay the frozen lands of the Forodwaith.
