Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why does the captain describe our hero as "brave Macbeth -- well he deserves that name" at the start?

Answer: He has defeated the Norwegian army in battle

At the beginning he is described as "brave Macbeth" and "noble"-- at the end, he is described as a "tyrant" and a butcher.
2. Altogether, which characters give Macbeth the idea of murdering Duncan?

Answer: The witches and Lady Macbeth

The prophecies of the witches leave Macbeth with evil thoughts which he later dismisses. However, Lady Macbeth forces him to question his morals and, by condemning his manhood, sets him on course for murder.
3. Who does Macbeth frame for the crime?

Answer: King Duncan's servants

Macbeth and Lady Macbeth plant the daggers on the servants. Later, he admits to killing the servants in "a fit of rage" for murdering their ruler; in fact, he did it so they could not deny the crimes and would be forever blamed.
4. Now that Macbeth is king, who is his next victim?

Answer: Banquo

He hires assassins to kill Banquo and Fleance, but the latter escapes. He planned the murder because he knew that Banquo had heard the prophecies, and the witches had also told Banquo that his children would be kings.
5. Why does Macbeth act oddly at the royal banquet?

Answer: He sees a ghost

Banquo's ghost appears in his chair and Macbeth practically admits to the murder in front of his loyal subjects. Fortunately, his wife steps in to the rescue.
6. Who do the witches tell Macbeth to fear?

Answer: Thane of Fife

He plans to murder Macduff (the Thane of Fife) afterwards, only to be told that he had escaped to England to find Malcolm and raise an army against Macbeth. Knowing this, Macbeth kills Macduff's wife and children. This senseless murder is the beginning of Macbeth's moral decline.
7. Why does Macbeth not care that most of his army have changed sides?

Answer: He decides not to be afraid until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane.

He thinks he is invincible so long as the witches' prophecies do not come true. Unfortunately for him, the English army cut Birnam Wood up and disguise themselves as trees: thus Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane.
8. Macbeth is saddened and heartbroken over his wife's death.

Answer: False

At this point, Macbeth no longer shows any compassion or emotion, aside from reflecting on the apparent futility of it all in his "Tomorrow and tomorrow" speech. He acts rather cold and he cares more about his servant dressing him in his own armour.
9. Why is Macduff the only person who can defeat Macbeth?

Answer: He isn't born of woman.

Macbeth has thought himself immortal up to this point, as he did not understand the depths of the prophecies. He realises the trap which the witches had laid for him.
10. What does Macduff call Macbeth that prompts our hero to "try the last"?

Answer: A coward and a tyrant

At this point, Macbeth is no longer fighting for ambition, pride or his kingdom, but for his own survival. In the end, however, he is decapitated by Macduff after his final battle.
