With a population of 2356, Nota Lake is the home of Kinsey's prospective client Selma Newquist, widow of Tom Newquist, detective in the County Sheriff's Department. Santa Teresa is where Kinsey is based.
2. Tom Newquist had appeared to be under some kind of stress, according to his wife's story. Whose body had been found in the area?

Answer: Pinkie Ritter

At first it was believed that Ritter had committed suicide by hanging. He had just come out of prison and as we later find out, he was a horrible person who had committed many heinous crimes. The other names are all law enforcement officers.
3. One possible witness was an ex-con called Alfie Toth. In which hotel was Alfie last seen?

Answer: Gramercy Hotel

On hearing that someone was looking for him and fearing for his safety, Alfie tried to evade his pursuer. But to no avail. His remains are found and it is only through dental records that he is identified.
4. Tom Newquist had a connection with a female sheriff's investigator. What was her name?

Answer: Collen Sellers

After some mild flirtations, Colleen fell in love with Tom and was devastated because of his death. However, with the love being non-reciprocating, Colleen veered between grief and the feelings of a woman scorned. Kinsey had to get tough with her to extract all the information she had.
5. During her first visit Kinsey was assaulted in her motel room. What major injury did she sustain?

Answer: Two broken fingers

Waking up in her motel room Kinsey hears scratches at the lock of the motel door. Arming herself with a clothes iron she waits for the stranger to enter. However her plan backfires and the intruder breaks two of her fingers as a punishment.
6. On the night that Sheriff Newquist died, he was in his truck talking to someone. To whom was he talking?

Answer: Barrett LaMott

Tom was investigating the death of Ritter. On the night that he died he had picked Barrett up from her job at the diner to ask her a few questions. However he had a heart attack and died in his truck and Barrett walked back to town.
7. Since the night of his death, Sheriff Newquist's notebook had disappeared. Who had it?

Answer: Barrett LaMott

During the onset of his heart attack Tom had handed Barrett his notebook to keep it safe. Then he swore her to secrecy and told her to make her way back to town and to avoid being seen by anyone on the road. Kinsey retrieves the notebook from Barrett and spends a frustrating time trying to decode the clues that are found within it.
8. Selma has a son called Brant. What job does Brant have?

Answer: Paramedic

Brant is 24 and a paramedic for the fire department. He was 10 years of age when he was first introduced to Tom Newquist by his mother.

Answer: Cecilia Boden

Kinsey was not impressed with the standards of the motel. Cecilia, like most of the town, did not like Selma and was not hospitable towards Kinsey. It was Cecilia, however, who drove Kinsey to the hospital after she was attacked.
Margaret and Agnes are the daughters of Pinkie Ritter, with Margaret also being a civilian employee in the Nota Lake Sheriffs Department.
10. At the end when Kinsey is reviewing the events that had transpired, what was it she would have advised Selma to do instead of hiring her services?

Answer: Get her teeth capped

Selma had two front teeth that were discoloured. After losing her husband and the events caused by her hiring Kinsey it would have been better to leave things alone and let her husband die with his secret untold.
