Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is not one of Aragorn's ancestors?

Answer: Ecthelion

Ecthelion was Boromir's grandfather.
Valandil was the only surviving son of Isildur.
The Aragorn we all know is actually Aragorn II. One of his ancestors actually had the same name.
2. When Aragorn dies, Arwen is there and calls to him. What does she call him? (hint, in the common tongue it's "hope")

Answer: Estel

Aragorn was only two when his father died. His mother knew that Sauron would seek to destroy any remaining heirs of Isildur, so she fled with Aragorn to Rivendell, and called him Estel to disguise his lineage.
3. In "The Two Towers", Aragorn is dubbed Wingfoot. Who gives him this name?

Answer: Eomer

This is directly after Aragorn, along with Legolas and Gimli, has traveled 45 leagues in 4 days.
4. In "The Two Towers", Faramir tells Frodo of a great warrior who would come when the need was great, help win many battles, then leave when it was time to celebrate the victory. This was actually Aragorn. What name was he traveling under?

Answer: Thorongil

When traveling in Gondor, Thorongil aided Ecthelion, Denethor's father. In the Index, we learn that Thorongil was really Aragorn.
5. In "Return of the King," Aragorn enters Minas Tirith and the people give him a name. What is the name?

Answer: Elfstone

The clue is that when Aragorn enters Minas Tirith, he wears the green stone given to him by Arwen. The people see this and call him Elfstone. "and so the name which it was foretold at his birth that he should bear was chosen for him by his own people."
6. When Aragorn becomes King, he is known as what?

Answer: King Elessar

When Aragorn becomes King, he takes the name King Elessar. He actually refers to himself as Elessar or Elfstone many times in the first two books.
7. We all know that in Bree Aragorn goes by Strider. But did you know that when Aragorn becomes King, he uses the elven rendering of Strider as the name of his house? What is the name?

Answer: Telcontar

In the Houses of Healing, Merry wakes and calls to Strider. It is then that Aragorn declares that "Strider shall be the name of my house, if that be ever established. In the high tongue it will not sound so ill, and Telcontar I will be and all the heirs of my body."
8. In Rivendell, Bilbo asks for his friend the Dłnadan. He is referring to Aragorn. What does Dłnadan mean? (hint, the plural is Dłnedain)

Answer: Man of the West

Elendil and his sons came from across the seas, from out of the West, out of Numenor. In the North of Middle Earth, their descendants came to be known as the Dłnedain, men of the West. Aragorn, as heir to the throne, is known as THE Dłnadan.
9. Bill Ferny, a character in Bree, calls Aragorn something even less flattering than Strider. What did he call him?

Answer: Longshanks

Aragorn and the Hobbits bought a half-starved pony from Bill Ferny. Sam took a great liking to the pony and named him Bill. When the Hobbits return to the Shire, Bill Ferny is guarding the gates for Saruman.
10. When Isildur left his son Valandil with Elrond in Rivendell, he left some heirlooms. These were passed down from father to son all the way to Aragorn. These heirlooms included all but one of the following. Which one doesn't fit in?

Answer: the standard (flag) of the house of Elendil

The shreds of Narsil and the ring of Barahir were given to Aragorn by Elrond when Aragorn was twenty. Elrond withheld the scepter until Aragorn had been crowned King of Gondor. The standard was not an heirloom. Arwen made it for Aragorn as a symbol of thier hope and love. He bore it into battle once the need for secrecy had passed.
