Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first character to realize suicides were occurring at the crossroads?

Answer: Lemuel

After the first suicide, a homeless woman named Tabby Ann Masterson, Lemuel hid the evidence. When the next one happened, Lem felt it was time to have a town meeting about it. Suicide number two was Joshua Allen. He was followed by Price Eggleston, who'd kidnapped Fiji in book two.

After that, they took measures to prevent any more people from being talked into their own deaths. This did not stop animals from dying en masse at the crossroads of Witch Light Road and Davy Highway.
2. Fiji's sister Kiki came to Midnight. From which other Texas city had Kiki traveled?

Answer: Houston

All of these Texas cities mentioned are in close proximity to one another, but Kiki came from Houston. She left her second husband Marty to seek solace in Fiji, whom she'd had little do with since Fiji inherited their Aunt Mildred's home in Midnight. Kiki was a narcissist who was jealous of Fiji. Fiji finally had to order her to leave town. Fiji and Kiki were both named after the islands on which they were conceived.

In Kiki's case, it was Waikiki in Hawaii.
3. The mystery surrounding the Reed family was revealed. Who'd hired the Reeds to live in Midnight?

Answer: Olivia's father

Olivia, whose real name was Melanie, had not parted well with her father, Nicholas Wicklow. In Book Two, she'd almost been kidnapped by a man who worked for her father named Ellery McGuire. The Reeds had been suspect for their entire tenure in Midnight, but no one had done much in the way of checking them out.

They ran the Gas N Go when necessary, and the restaurant, where Madonna Reed was famous for her cooking skills. Olivia's father did not mean her any harm, but that was not clear until close to the end of the story.
4. Who sent a psychic warning to Manfred about the crossroads?

Answer: His dead grandmother

Manfred's grandmother, Xylda Bernardo, came through to Manfred on the tail end of his reading for Agnes Ortiz and Linda Ortega. She warned "get away from the crossroad, it's waking up". Xylda died in Charlaine Harris' Harper Connelly series, where we were first introduced to Manfred. Sookie Stackhouse was the waitress from Bon Temps, who could read minds. Manfred knew her as well, but their encounter must have come outside of the Sookie, Harper, or Midnight stories because though he mentioned her, I never read the story where it happened.

Vanessa Ives was a character on the TV series "Penny Dreadful".
5. A man named Sylvester Ravenwing came to Midnight and revealed himself to be a blood relative of Manfred.

Answer: True

Sylvester was Manfred's biological grandfather. He took over the running of the Gas N Go, and made sure Manfred was the first to know of their connection. He also had information on what was causing the suicides on the crossroads.
6. What fictional town did Fiji compare Midnight to, when talking to Manfred about it being on a Hellmouth?

Answer: Sunnydale

She asked Manfred if Midnight was like Sunnydale, on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", and if he thought they were sitting atop a Hellmouth. Manfred, who admitted his grandmother had loved the show, laughed at this and they discussed the characters. He said Fiji must be Willow, Lemuel was Angel, and Olivia was Buffy. Fiji said she felt Olivia was more like Faith, Bobo like Xander, and Manfred concluded that their young were-tiger Diederik was Oz.

Charming was the town on "Sons of Anarchy", Beacon Hills on MTV's series "Teen Wolf", and Storybrooke was from the series "Once Upon a Time".
7. Lemuel made a trade with a vampire named Joseph. Which item did he give to Joseph in order to acquire a vampire named Christine?

Answer: A lie detecting orb

Christine had been sired thirty years earlier, so she was a young vampire. Joseph did not seem to be too bothered by trading her away, but he did want an exchange. In preparation for that, Lemuel had brought along a softball-sized ivory colored orb that had tiny blue butterflies painted on it. When a person lied in its presence, it glowed brightly. Christine was taught by her sire, Dr. Quigley, to read Etruscan. Lemuel needed that knowledge to decipher a book written by an old vampire named Arria Auclina. She knew of the past events in Midnight and had written about was to come. After her help, Christine was free to leave Lemuel, but instead she chose to try and kill him. So, he killed her instead.

The cluviel dor was a device used in the Sookie Stackhouse "Southern Vampire" Series, an Orb of Thesulah was used on both "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel", and a Golden Snitch was used for Quidditch play in the "Harry Potter" franchise.
8. Fiji killed her first person in this book. Was it to save Bobo's life?

Answer: No

It was to save herself and Olivia. The man she killed was Ellery McGuire. She first froze a group of armed men converging on the pawnshop. Olivia ran out to the Hummer they'd arrived in, and opened the door. She was instantly shot by Ellery. Fiji reacted without hesitation.

She was also in the line of Ellery's fire, and she used her powers to pull the oxygen from his lungs until he died. This quick reaction prevented Olivia from being shot again, and saved both of their lives.
9. What was the name of the demon trapped under the crossroads?

Answer: Colconnar

Sylvester revealed this to Manfred, and then to the rest of their little community. Lem's special book told a story of how Colconnar was trapped under the crossroads 250 years earlier during a special ritual. They'd have to repeat this ritual on Halloween, during Samhain (pronounced sah-win), in order to trap him for another 250 years.

Azazel the demon has appeared in entertainment on the series "Supernatural" and the movie "Fallen", Dretch was from the game "Dungeons and Dragons", and Valek from the film "The Conjuring 2".
10. Fiji had to use her body to stop the demon from rising again. Which man joined her in the circle to fulfill the ritual?

Answer: Bobo

When the ritual was revealed by Lemuel, most volunteered to be "the man" if she so chose. Joe and Chuy were lovers, and not interested in sex with a woman, but also agreed to step up if needed. Lemuel had married Olivia and did not wish to be involved in the act itself. In the end, Bobo finally offered himself, not knowing if he'd live through it. He and Fiji loved each other anyway, despite them never being able to express those feelings properly, so it was the natural choice. The other supernatural creatures offered their power outside the circle, and Olivia watched in support. They started the ritual, and Colconnar kept rising anyway. Mr. Snuggly, Fiji's cat who could speak English, transformed into a shadow lion and bit the demon as it clawed at Bobo. Between the consummation of love, and the help of Fiji's familiar (Mr. Snuggly), the demon was once more trapped under the crossroads. Sylvester decided to stay in town, as did the Reeds. Olivia's father called her and apologized for the reasons behind their estrangement. Bobo and Fiji remained an item. Quinn bought the house next to Fiji's place, and Manfred continued to date Estella.

The End.
