Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nikki Sixx began writing a new diary Christmas day of 1986. Which is NOT a reason for doing so:

Answer: He had never written a diary

In the first entry into the diary, Nikki states three reasons for starting a new diary. He said he had written diaries before, but he started this particular one because he had no more friends, so that he would know what he did the day before and so it could be used as a suicide note if he died.

Taken from "The Heroin Diaries" -
"1. I have no friends left. 2. So I can read back and remember what I did the day before. 3. So if I die, at least I leave a paper trail of my life (nice lil suicide note). Merry Christmas...it's just you and me, diary. Welcome to my life."
2. Nikki tells of his paranoia associated with his drug use. Throughout the year, he believes, sees and hears people coming to get him from outside his house. Where does he retreat when he believes the world is out to get him?

Answer: His bedroom closet

Throughout the book, Nikki retreats to his bedroom closet when getting high. He goes into more detail about his paranoia as the book progresses and his drug use increases, but we are first introduced to this retreat in the entry from December 28th, 1986.

Taken from "The Heroin Diaries" -
"I always end up in my closet in my bedroom. Let me tell you about that place, my closet. It's more than a closet- it's a haven for me. It's where I keep my dope and where I keep my gun. I know when I'm in there I'm safe, at least until I get too high."
3. Nikki was an addict. Anything that could be drunk, smoked, snorted or injected was fair game, but his true love was heroin. What made him take heroin for the second time?

Answer: His heroes did it

Nikki says in the January 6th, 1987 entry that he tried heroin once, but he got sick. He decided to try it again because all of his heroes used heroin.

Taken from "The Heroin Diaries" -
"There's this funny thing about heroin...the first time you do it, you throw up, you feel sick and you can't move. You lay on your back and your head spins and your body flips...you say to yourself, this is the stupidest drug ever. Only the dumb of the dumb would ever do it again. So why did I do it again? Because my heroes did it...because I idolize my heroes because they didn't care; and I really don't care about anything."
4. Motley Crue was in the studio in early January 1987 recording "Girls Girls Girls." His band mates constantly ignored his erratic behavior. Nikki tells of one such instance while teaching Vince and Mick a new song. The two picked up the new song quicker than Nikki could've imagine. Why did they pick it up so easily?

Answer: Nikki had taught them the song the day before, but forgot

Nikki's state of mind deteriorates as the diaries progress and he acknowledges it as he writes throughout the year. In the entry from January 17th, 1987, he writes that he started teaching them the song, but halfway through him talking they started playing perfectly. First he was amazed at their quick learning, but then realized he had taught them the song the day before.

Taken from "The Heroin Diaries" -
"So I started teaching them the new song. I gave Vince the lyrics and showed Mick the guitar riffs. They said nothing and started playing...they were good...they got it right away. Then halfway through the song I realized they knew it already. I'd already shown them the song...yesterday. I didn't say anything. Of course, neither did they..."
5. Nikki would venture out of his drug haven in his house while high. In his mind, what he saw outside was real and he would often report it to his security company via his panic button. Which is something Nikki claimed to witness?

Answer: All of these

In two excerpts from April 10th, 1987, Nikki gives more details of his paranoia and why his closet haven is so safe. He tells of seeing the faces at the windows and voices coming from behind the doors.

Throughout the book, Nikki includes modern excerpts about the events in his diaries. An excerpt from Doug Thaler tells of Nikki calling him in the middle of the night saying that Mexicans were climbing over his fence carrying guns.

Taken from "The Heroin Diaries" -
"I pushed the panic button again tonight. It wasn't my fault. Every time I dared to peer out of my closet, I could see faces at the window and I heard voices at the door."

This is an excerpt from Doug Thaler telling of calls he would get from Nikki: "...there are Mexicans carrying guns climbing over my fence."
6. Nikki's odd behavior was often overlooked by those closest to him. When others, such as Nikki's security company, began to take notice, who smoothed things over?

Answer: The band co-manager Doc McGhee

April 10th 1987, the band co-manager Doc McGhee called Nikki saying his security company had threatened to cancel his contract. Doc smoothed everything out and didn't ask any questions.

Taken from "The Heroin Diaries" -
"I would get calls from West Tech saying he had set all his alarms off and was in the house refusing to answer the door. Or the police department would call me because Nikki's neighbor had phoned them to report that Nikki was crawling around his garden in the middle of the night with a shotgun. It would be bad enough if it happened once, but this was going on at least twice a week." - Doc McGhee
7. Throughout his ordeal, Nikki admits what he is doing is killing him. He says he wants to quit, but is stuck in the life he has created. Which is a way that Nikki almost considered to end his addiction in an entry from April 28th?

Answer: Killing himself

Nikki stated his intentions to get methadone shots for three or four days and quit cold turkey in an entry from May 1st, 1987; but he did consider killing himself in an entry from April 28th. He writes that he woke up in the night and grabbed the shotgun and contemplated pulling the trigger to end it all.

Taken from "The Heroin Diaries" -
"Then I remembered putting the gun in my mouth last night and considering pulling the trigger just to stop the insanity...I want to shut my head down and make it stop."
8. May 8th, 1987, Nikki states he will enroll in a 30-day program to quit taking heroin. He gets the first methadone shot May 10th and continues until May 13th. When is the next entry that he does heroin again?

Answer: About a month later

Nikki went to get the methadone shots for four days and all but cut his addiction. Surrounded by temptation, on June 18th, 1987, Nikki figured one goodbye round wouldn't hurt the progress he had made.

Taken from "The Heroin Diaries" -
"I just took a celebration shot in the bathroom. (OK, I admit to having brought a small bindle of gear) I love that warm feeling that comes over me (OK, I admit I brought one pack of rigs). It's the best feeling in the world as you slump back and everything in life feels perfect..."
9. December 23rd, 1987, marks an important day in Nikki's life. He was pronounced dead from an overdose by the paramedics but rushed to the hospital and was revived. What did Nikki do when he woke up in the hospital?

Answer: Got out of the bed and left the hospital

Nikki woke up in the hospital to a policeman asking questions about his drug use. He told off the policeman, unhooked himself from the monitors and IVs and went into the parking lot. Two girls, who had heard he died on the radio, had lit a candle in his honor. Nikki approached them and got a ride back to his house.

Taken from "The Heroin Diaries" -
"I ripped out my tubes and staggered in just my leather pants into the parking lot, where two teenage girls were sitting crying around a candle. They had heard on the radio that I was dead and looked kind of surprised to see me."
10. What did Nikki do when he got home from the hospital?

Answer: Changed his answering machine message and shot up

Taken from "The Heroin Diaries" -
"I went straight to my answering machine and changed my message so it said, 'Hey, it's Nikki, I'm not here because I'm dead.'...I went straight to my bedroom, shot up and passed out."

He woke up the next day with the needle still in his arm and decided that drugs had taken over his life and had already killed him. He made the decision then that it was time to quit.

If you haven't read the book, I would encourage you to do so. While it is not an uplifting read or for the faint of heart, I would recommend it as a unique perspective into the mind of an addict. Nikki invites the reader to read extremely personal thoughts and feelings and share in his own personal battle against addiction. As Nikki states in the beginning and the end, "The Heroin Diaries" is not written to glamorize the rock star life style, but rather as a tribute to those who have the courage to stand up against addiction and to those who need a boost of confidence to begin their fight.
