Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Patrick Suskind's novel "Perfume", Jean-Baptiste Grenouille was born in a market in 18th Century Paris and was instantly abandoned by his mother. What was her profession?

Answer: She sold fish

Grenouille's mother was selling fish in a Paris market when she went into labour. Grenouille was her fifth baby, though his mother claims the other children were stillborn or died at birth. Expecting Grenouille to succumb to a similar fate, she abandoned him amongst the fish offal and carried on with her daily business.
2. As a baby, Grenouille was taken by the Paris authorities to a church charity run by Father Terrier. At first, Father Terrier thought that Grenouille was a cute baby; what was one of the reasons that Terrier quickly rejected Grenouille and passed him on to a Paris orphanage?

Answer: He discovered that Grenouille had no discernible scent

Father Terrier made a careful examination of Grenouille and noticed that he had none of the normal smells you would normally associate with a human baby. He was also alarmed to note that Grenouille seemed to be smelling and savouring Terrier's various odours.
3. As a young man, Grenouille obtained an apprenticeship with Giuseppe Baldini, a perfumer whose fortunes were in decline. To demonstrate his knowledge of scent, Grenouille re-created a perfume that was all the rage in high French society and produced by Baldini's rival. What was the name of the popular scent?

Answer: Amor and Psyche

Prior to Grenouille's arrival at Baldini's shop, Baldini had been trying, without success, to make Amor and Psyche. Grenouille could smell Baldini's efforts and offered to make the perfume despite not knowing the names of the ingredients or ever having received any training. Baldini was astonished as Grenouille not only made Amor and Psyche, but also improved it.
4. During his apprenticeship with Baldini, Grenouille learned how to distill, preserve and capture the essences of flowers, herbs and spices which were used in the making of perfume. Grenouille became angry and frustrated with Baldini and fell ill as a result. Why was Grenouille angered?

Answer: Baldini told him that he could not preserve the scent of living things

Grenouille was obsessed with capturing scents of human beings, and especially young and beautiful women. Realising that Baldini could not help him further Grenouille was released from his apprenticeship to study elsewhere. In exchange, Grenouille gave thousands of recipes for "great" perfumes to Baldini.
5. During Grenouille's apprenticeship as a perfumer, Baldini restored his business and fame as a great Parisien perfumer, exploiting Grenouille's abilities for his own profit. Baldini had a particular rival who had success with a popular perfume. Who was Baldini's rival and nemesis?

Answer: Pélissier

Baldini despised Pélissier because he was successful, and claimed that Pélissier had had no formal training. The Montgolfier brothers invented the hot air balloon. Druot was not in Paris but encountered Grenouille later in the story. Chenier was Baldini's long suffering sales assistant.
6. In Patrick Suskind's "Perfume", Jean-Baptiste Grenouille develops a system of capturing and preserving the scent and essences of young women. Unfortunately, Grenouille murders young women to achieve his goal. He is apprenticed in Paris, but leaves to develop his theory that human scent can be preserved. By the time Grenouille departs, how many young women has he murdered?

Answer: One

Grenouille murders a beautiful girl selling plums. It is his realisation that he was unable to preserve her scent that drives him to further excesses and starts him on a killing spree.
7. In addition to his incredible sense of smell, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille discovers he has another attribute that aids him in his pursuit of his innocent victims. What other attribute does Grenouille possess?

Answer: Other people can't smell him

Grenouille carries no scent of his own and therefore people around him barely acknowledge him or perceive him. He is unnoticeable and almost totally forgettable. Even dogs are unable to sense his presence by smell.
8. In Suskind's "Perfume", the murderer, Grenouille, journeys to Grasse in France and takes up a second apprenticeship for an attractive widow, Madame Arnulfi. Grenouille works under a journeyman, Druot, who is also Madame Arnulfi's lover. What fate becomes Druot?

Answer: He is falsely accused and executed for Grenouille's crimes

Druot is a brute of a man and bullies Grenouille, who is impervious to Druot's torments.
9. Whilst working for Baldini, Grenouille learns that a "Great Perfume" contains a secret note, twelve of which make up a chord, and there is a myth that the perfect chord contains a thirteenth note. Each note is harvested from the essences of Grenouille's victims, but which beautiful woman did Grenouille pursue to obtain the thirteenthth note?

Answer: Laure Richis - daughter of the richest man in Grasse

It is not clear (to me anyway) whether Grenouille falls in love with Laure Richis or whether he falls in love with her scent. He is mesmerized by her scent. Her father takes Laure away from Grasse as he fears she may be the next victim. Grenouille pursues her scent to a remote guest house where, alas, she becomes his final victim.
10. Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, from Patrick Suskind's novel "Perfume", gathers the scents and essences by murdering young women whose scents form a chord comprising twelve notes and a thirteenthth secret note. Near the end of the novel, Grenouille releases a mere trace of his perfect perfume on a crowd in Grasse. What was the impact of Grenouille's "Perfect Perfume" on the people of Grasse?

Answer: They forgave him his sins, fell in love with him and embarked on a mass orgy

Grenouille's perfume was so powerful that even the father of his last victim, Antoine Richis, pleaded for Grenouille's release. He believed that Grenouille was an "angel". A wave of hysteria and emotion washed over the crowd who had come to witness an execution. They fell down and spent the whole night making love in the town square. When they awoke the following morning they were embarrassed, and the incident was quickly forgotten. The people of Grasse carried on as if nothing had happened.

Shortly after this, Grenouille poured a large quantity of the perfume over himself in the midst of a Paris crowd, who were set in such a frenzied state that they ripped him to pieces and ate bits. An ugly end to a sad life.
