Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The ability of an Arbok depends on the pattern on its neck. What ability does Agatha's Arbok have?

Answer: Boost a random stat

Agatha's Arbok has the ability to boost a certain stat at will but Koga's Arbok has rapid healing ability (which is why it survived back at the Pokemon Tower). For reasons unknown the abilities of Arbok in the games are 'intimidate', 'shed skin', and 'unnerve (hidden)'.

While 'shed skin' may seem similar to Koga's Arbok's ability, Agatha's Arbok's ability is neither of them. It would also have been nice if in the games Arboks could have different patterns which would help a person easily tell its ability.
2. Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon, and Frenzy Plant; these are the ultimate moves only teachable to starters. Red and Green took hours learning this move. Which character was the fastest to learn the ultimate move?

Answer: Silver

It took Silver a quick glance of Hydro Cannon to completely understand how to use it. The one who took the longest in learning the ultimate move was Gold, who took two months to learn Blast Burn. In order to defeat Archie, all the pokedex holders (as of the emerald chapters) except for Yellow (since she didn't get a starter) shot their Pokemon's ultimate moves at the same time. Nine trainers with their Pokemon: Venusaur, Meganium, Sceptile, Blastoise, Feraligator, Swampert, Charizard, Typhlosion, and Blaziken!
3. Pokemon held items exist in the manga.

Answer: True

They do exist! If a Pokemon has a focus sash, no matter how strong the attack, the Pokemon will survive with a shrivel of hp remaining. If a berry is held, they will eat the berry when the situation calls for it. Imagine Lance's Dragonite with a life orb, or Pika with a light ball. Unbeatable!
4. When Red battles Giovanni in Viridian City, he would have lost if it wasn't for which Pokemon?

Answer: Pika

Pika has yet again done the impossible by defeating Giovanni's team of Ground type Pokemon. When Red's Pikachu was first seen OHKOing Brock's Onix (defeated Onix with thunderbolt 0.o) in the early chapters, you could tell a lot was going for it. All of Red's Pokemon were defeated by Giovanni except for Pika, which as of Pokemon Black chapters, is still undefeated against any non-legendary Pokemon.
5. When the FireRed/LeafGreen chapters ended, two Pokemon clashed and caused Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, and Silver to be petrified (similar to Ash when he tried to stop Mewtwo and Mew in the movie). We know Mewtwo was one of them, so who was the other Pokemon?

Answer: Darkrai

A power clash between Mewtwo and Darkrai caused the petrification of Red and company, similar to how Ash was petrified when Mew and Mewtwo clashed. In order to save them, all the other pokedex holders banded together to attempt to catch Jirachi to grant their wishes to save them.
6. Diamond taught Torterra a unique move which only uses a single leaf from a razor leaf attack; what did he call this move he invented?

Answer: Dia's Mach One and Only Razor Leaf

A single leaf attack that strikes the opponent at lightning speed. It was so fast that the naked eye couldn't see it. The only other Pokemon in the manga that has acquired a unique move is Red's Pikachu. Why the games didn't have a +1 priority grass type attack is a mystery.
7. Which of these characters has not temporarily owned a legendary Pokemon?

Answer: Emerald

Emerald never owned Latios or Latias, he just befriended them. The rule of owning a Pokemon is you must catch it directly or indirectly with a pokeball. Regigigas chose to be Diamond's Pokemon and Suicune chose Misty to be its trainer, but when Misty was too injured to battle, Suicune went to Crystal to stop Pryce.
8. Although barely, Red qualified to be the gym leader of what city?

Answer: Viridian

Red was able to qualify, but he barely passed due to a permanent injury caused by the ice cuffs made by Lorelei's Pokemon. Disappointed by his performance, he chose not to be a gym leader yet. When he heard that the hot springs located in Johto can heal his injuries, he left to get healed.

After getting healed of his injuries, he didn't seem to have any interest in becoming a gym leader anymore. Green is currently the Viridian city gym leader. Imagine if Red, the champion, actually becomes a gym leader, there would be no more trainers in the Pokemon League.
9. By the end of Emerald, the leaders of Team Aqua and Team Magma are dead.

Answer: True

Archie, the leader of Team Aqua, killed the leader of Team Magma to obtain a special armor that has the properties of reflect and light screen, protecting him from almost every attack. The armor was broken by a brick break form either Poltaro or Poli. Little did they know that once that armor was put on, the wearer's life was bound to it, so when the armor was destroyed, Archie soon died.
10. What is NOT true about Red and Gold?

Answer: Both own a Pikachu

Gold Never had a Pikachu, Gold had a Pichu but there is no indication whether or not it evolved. It was sort of a disappointment for me; after all, the Pichu's parents were non other than Pika and Chuchu (Yellow's Pikachu). For some reason, that Pichu was replaced by a Togepi and was not heard of ever since.
11. In the manga, people mistake Voltorbs and Electrodes for pokeballs.

Answer: False

Not once was there an incident this happened in the manga. But there is some truth to this, which is why in the games you could mistake an item as a Voltorb/Electrode. As it turns out, in the manga, Voltorbs are the exact same size of a pokeball. Surprisingly Electrode, despite being the evolved form of Voltorb, is only slightly larger which makes its size barely noticeable to that of its pre-evolved counterpart.

It was amusing how Lt. Surge used them; he had around 20 Electrodes in an ammo belt (similar to machine guns) strapped to his shoulder and in his hand was a grenade launcher that shoots not grenades, but these Pokemon. Literally a Voltorb Cannon!
12. Which of these characters did Arceus open up to?

Answer: Crystal

Arceus opened up to Crystal, Gold, and Silver. Crystal even nearly caught Arceus who was searching for its plates across the Johto region. With the help of the Johto trio the plates were recovered. Unfortunately it was a trap so that Team Rocket could enter the Shinjo Ruins.
13. What color is Green's Gyarados?

Answer: Green

Green has a Gyarados, not the Gyarados Red temporarily traded for Charizard. It boasts very unique coloration not present in the games or the anime. Neither normal nor shiny, the first of its kind to ever be seen. If you look in bulbpedia or serebii it doesn't state anything that he has a Gyarados, only Red's Gyarados which he temporarily acquired.

Although the pages are in black and white, there were numerous times Green's Gyarados was stated to be color green which makes for an awesome Gyarados trio. Red's blue Gyarados, Silver's red Gyarados, and Green's green Gyarados.
14. When Gold nicknames his Pokemon, there is always a specific suffix that is present in the names of the Pokemon he used. What is the suffix?

Answer: taro

Explotaro, Poltaro, Ataro, Sintaro, Utaro, Mantaro, and Togetaro, this is Gold's main team as of Heart Gold and Soul Silver chapters. Can you guess what Pokemon goes to which nickname? The rest of the unused Pokemon are not nicknamed, or unknown.
15. At the end of Heart Gold and Soul Silver chapters, the scene ends with the picture of three people. Lance, Giovanni, and the last one is?

Answer: Pryce

Heart Gold ended with a cliffhanger; Arceus is trapped, our heroes failed to save it. Just when all hope is lost, enter Lance, Giovanni, and Pryce. End scene.

Directly after this is the beginning of Pokemon Black and White. This could mean there may soon be another pokedex holder reunion. I wonder how the story will go and how they will make all 16 pokedex users somehow meet to stop evil. :)
