Question 1 of 15
1. "The Belgariad" has numerous characters with diverse histories. In Garion's journey, he has met kings and queens, princes and princesses, barons and emperors, numerous nobles as well as ordinary folk. Some of them were married when we met them but most of them had their love story blossom as David Eddings' five-book story (2-books for those who own the reprinted "Belgariad" volume 1 and 2) unfolded. Let's see how well you know the pairs and their lovestories. So, to start it off: This couple is known as The Child of Light and the Queen of The World. Hint

Question 2 of 15
2. From these follows the line of Polgara, Beldaran, Gared, Daran, Gorek, and numerous others. Hint

Question 3 of 15
3. She is the most important woman in the world; queens bow to her, kings follow her without question; she is one of the most beautiful and most powerful women and yet she chose a very humble, ordinary, and practical blacksmith to be her mate. Hint

Question 4 of 15
4. In their so-called courtship, she admitted to asking Garion if he could cast a spell so he (not Garion) could love her; meanwhile, he vowed to set every horse in Algaria (he's Sha-Dar) to look for her if she ever left him. Hint

Question 5 of 15
5. He's been after her for the longest time but her parents didn't approve. When his cousin became king, the girl's parents finally agreed. Unfortunately, their marriage was not a happy one; he stayed away from home as often as he could, she did numerous petty things to make him unhappy. But as they both grew and matured, they realized that they loved each other and had a better relationship afterwards. Hint

Question 6 of 15
6. He is secretly a brillant strategist and his second wife is a very intelligent woman, though not many Alorn kingdoms accept this. They are very much in love and it's so sad that he had to die. Still, she wore black even after her mourning period was over and never married again. Hint

Question 7 of 15
7. Complete opposites, they are drawn by a force they don't really understand. He's a religious fanatic who thinks about sin, sin, sin all the time and she's a woman who looks at life the way it is and accepts it for what it is - even managing to enjoy what he sees as sin since she has no choice. Hint

Question 8 of 15
8. They finally got together in "The Mallorean" but their love story has been known far and wide throughout Arendia and, as Belgarath put it, "Arendish virgins have been crying themselves to sleep" because of their love triangle.

Answer: (Three Words; include 'and')
Question 9 of 15
9. He's devoid of intelligent thoughts and when people first heard of their lovestory, they thought that she would be the brains in their partnership. After all, she's good in medicine and practical ('xept when it comes to him!). Unfortunately, whenever she looks at him, all rational thought leaves her head too... Hint

Question 10 of 15
10. He dreamt about her even before she was born. She was probably born just to be his wife and the mother of his children, from whom the Chosen One will be one. Yet their marriage was the start of Belgarath and Polgara's truce. Hint

Question 11 of 15
11. After the battle of Vo Mimbre, these two were joined together in marriage to give the region peace. To maintain that peace and the fiction that all is united, all the ruling couples that followed this original ruling pair are named after the first two. These two are also probably the only monarchy where both male and female rule jointly to wherever their rule extends, before Garion declared that he and Ce'Nedra would also rule jointly. Hint

Question 12 of 15
12. Both quiet people, they rule over the plains of Algaria. Hint

Question 13 of 15
13. Their palace and kingdom is probably the most casual of all, with the king sharing an easy friendship with his knights and subjects. She's a dabbling mystic but has no talent in that area whatsoever. He's a very good king but believes his wife stupid ("Well I certainly didn't marry her for her brains!"). Hint

Question 14 of 15
14. Possibly the most ordinary-looking of all monarchs, they rule over practical Sendaria. It has been joked all over Aloria that the queen has probably been pregnant since puberty. Hint

Question 15 of 15
15. The two are the best who graduated at the Academy and with these two as parents, it's no doubt what their children's profession would be nor would there be any question their offspring would be good at it. He's the best spy and businessman Drasnia has and ended up one of the richest men around when we first start in "The Mallorean". She's also really good and ended up becoming one of Drasnian Intelligence's most secret spies.

Answer: (Three Words; include 'and', use real names)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Garion and Ce'Nedra

I think, out of all the couples we meet in Garion's story, they are the ones who bicker the most. From when they first meet until after they get married, when they settled down more or less.
2. From these follows the line of Polgara, Beldaran, Gared, Daran, Gorek, and numerous others.

Answer: Belgarath and Poledra

Belgarath first met Poledra when he was sent to search for Belar for the First War of the Races. She was a wolf then and stayed with him for many, many years. She figured out the secret to changing the form of the body and from then on, could shift between being a wolf and being a snowy owl.

After some time, she left and again met Belgarath, but this time as a woman named Poledra. They married, had twin daughters Polgara and Beldaran. Belgarath (and the rest of them) believed that Poledra died giving birth to her daughters, but Beldaran and Polgara knew the truth - that she had her own tasks to accomplish and that Belgarath had to be able to function without her.
3. She is the most important woman in the world; queens bow to her, kings follow her without question; she is one of the most beautiful and most powerful women and yet she chose a very humble, ordinary, and practical blacksmith to be her mate.

Answer: Polgara and Durnik

Durnik has been in love with "Mistress Pol" for quite some time and I guess Polgara too, but her side is never really dwelt upon. It's just sort of... there. When Zedar killed Durnik, she then admitted for all that she loved him and wanted to marry him.

She then misunderstood what Aldur meant when he talked about how marriage is a union of equals and how Polgara's power doesn't make it an equal union. Belgarath enjoyed knocking down Polgara's ego a few notches when she misunderstood Aldur's request of an equal union. Durnik is very sweet; does not express his love overtly but rather very silently, yet his love is very deep and abiding.
4. In their so-called courtship, she admitted to asking Garion if he could cast a spell so he (not Garion) could love her; meanwhile, he vowed to set every horse in Algaria (he's Sha-Dar) to look for her if she ever left him.

Answer: Hettar and Adara

This is one of my favorite courtships and Garion's reaction was priceless! (Garion: "Hettar?... Hettar?... Hetta?")
"ADARA: "Well, dear Hettar, you've finally escaped me, haven't you? I gave you a good chase, though. I even asked Garion to see if he could use sorcery on you."
HETTAR: "Garion?"
ADARA: "You see how desperate I was? He said he couldn't, though. What good is sorcery if you can't use it to make someone fall in love?"
HETTAR: "Love?"
ADARA: "What did you think we were talking about, Lord Hettar? The weather? Sometimes you can be impossibly dense. Don't be alarmed, my Lord. In a little while, I'll stop chasing you, and you'll be free."
HETTAR: "We'll talk about that when you're better."
ADARA: "I'm not going to get better. Haven't you been listening? I'm dying, Hettar."
HETTAR: "No, as a matter of fact, you're not dying..."
...
HETTAR: "I don't think I'd like that. There are things you and I need to talk about. This isn't the time or the place, but don't go trying to make yourself unaccessible."
ADARA: "You're just being kind."
HETTAR: "No. Practical. You've given me something to think about besides killing Murgos. It's probably going to take me a while to get used to the idea, but after I've thought it over, we'll definitely need to talk."
ADARA: "What a stupid mess I've made of things. If I were somebody else, I'd laugh at me. It'd really be better if we didn't see each other again."
HETTAR: "No, it wouldn't. And don't try to hide from me, because I'll find you - even if I have to have every horse in Algaria go looking for you.'"

Answer: Barak and Merel

This is so very cute. Although both wished that they could turn back time so all those wasted years wouldn't be, well, wasted. It was at the birth of Unrak, their son, that they healed their breach and made peace.
6. He is secretly a brillant strategist and his second wife is a very intelligent woman, though not many Alorn kingdoms accept this. They are very much in love and it's so sad that he had to die. Still, she wore black even after her mourning period was over and never married again.

Answer: Rhodar and Porenn

Rhodar married the much-younger Porenn and luckily, it was a love match. He's a brillant strategist and she's his equal partner in terms of running their kingdom. Silk was in love with Porenn until he fell in love with Liselle.
7. Complete opposites, they are drawn by a force they don't really understand. He's a religious fanatic who thinks about sin, sin, sin all the time and she's a woman who looks at life the way it is and accepts it for what it is - even managing to enjoy what he sees as sin since she has no choice.

Answer: Relg and Taiba

Very cute. Although I imagine they made a weird couple with Taiba lushly beautiful and Relg almost looking malformed (check out how he was described when we first see him in "The Belgariad") because his upper body was too muscled and was not in proportion to his body. I also loved the part when Relg wrote to Taiba but she couldn't read so Adara said she'll read for her, but when Taiba said it could be personal, Adara replied that she "promises to not listen".
8. They finally got together in "The Mallorean" but their love story has been known far and wide throughout Arendia and, as Belgarath put it, "Arendish virgins have been crying themselves to sleep" because of their love triangle.

Answer: Mandorallen and Nerina

The Baron died in "The Belgariad" so Mandorallen and Nerina were finally free to marry, which they did only after Belgarion bullied them. Proof positive that Arends are really kind of stupid and thrive on tragedy. Hee!
9. He's devoid of intelligent thoughts and when people first heard of their lovestory, they thought that she would be the brains in their partnership. After all, she's good in medicine and practical ('xept when it comes to him!). Unfortunately, whenever she looks at him, all rational thought leaves her head too...

Answer: Lelldorin and Ariana

Known in the prophecies as The Archer, Lelldorin hated all Mimbrates until he fell in love with Ariana, the physician who nursed him back to health after an Algroth wounded him. When they left Arendia to meet Garion in Riva, Lelldorin had been declared an outlaw and had a price on his head after a few (laughable and humorous) blunders.
10. He dreamt about her even before she was born. She was probably born just to be his wife and the mother of his children, from whom the Chosen One will be one. Yet their marriage was the start of Belgarath and Polgara's truce.

Answer: Beldaran and Riva

Polgara and Belgarath loved Beldaran and often vied for her attention. When she married Riva, Polgara realized that she had lost her twin and Belgarath finally had a chance to get to know Polgara without her jealous fits.

Answer: Mayaserana and Korodullin

They all look sickly and pale because they have to marry as closely as they can to the bloodline. That really isn't very healthy, is it?
12. Both quiet people, they rule over the plains of Algaria.

Answer: Cho-Hag and Silar

Silar is usually given deference because, as Ce'Nedra put it, "She's such a dear".
13. Their palace and kingdom is probably the most casual of all, with the king sharing an easy friendship with his knights and subjects. She's a dabbling mystic but has no talent in that area whatsoever. He's a very good king but believes his wife stupid ("Well I certainly didn't marry her for her brains!").

Answer: Anheg and Islena

A funny part - when Islena sends a letter to Anheg, he reacts, "Can you believe this? I didn't even know Islena can read and write and now I receive this!"
14. Possibly the most ordinary-looking of all monarchs, they rule over practical Sendaria. It has been joked all over Aloria that the queen has probably been pregnant since puberty.

Answer: Fulrach and Layla

Queen Layla, also known as the Mother of Sendaria, is also terrified of sea travel, even in the calmest of weathers. Fulrach wielded the most power during the march to the war at "Enchanter's End Game" because he controlled the food and supply wagons. And since Rhodar (and everyone else, for that matter) liked a good meal like any normal person, they definitely deferred to him and allowed him whatever he said he needed for his wagons.

Answer: Kheldar and Liselle

Also called Silk and Velvet, respectively. Silk is the best in the business and beat Khordoch, one of the best of the Dagashi, in "Magician's Gambit". He is often described as "a rat-nosed Drasnian" and easily dons the aliases Ambar of Kotu and Radek of Boktor interchangably. Velvet was just a little girl when she first met Silk, she is also the niece of Javelin, the head of Drasnian Intelligence.

When Bethra died, she was assigned to be Hunter, the most secret spy of Drasnian Intelligence, sent out to do the most delicate of jobs.

At the end of "The Mallorean", she's pregnant and it was commented that with Silk and her as parents, there was no doubt what the child's occupation would be.
