RJ Ellory was born in 1965, in Birmingham, West Midlands. He never knew his father as he disappeared before Roger was even born. His mother died when Roger was seven and he was sent to a boarding school. As Roger wasn't very good at sports or academic pursuits he spent most of his spare time reading.

"Candlemoth" is set in a politically turbulent America in the 1960s with a backdrop of the Vietnam war and civil unrest. The main character of "Candlemoth" is Daniel Ford. He is accused of the murder of his best friend and has only 30 days to live. These 30 days are spent trying come to terms with his fate as he tells his story to a priest.
