Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the translation for Freidrich Nietzsche's famous character, the Ubermensch?

Answer: The Overman/The Superman

This philosophical character was first introduced in "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". The Ultimate Man appears to be the Ubermenchs' opposite while Zarathustra was the lonely hermit who preached the meaning of the Ubermensch.
2. What Lovecraftian legend is known to be the first chronological story of the famous Cthulu Mythos?

Answer: The Nameless City

"The Call of Cthulu" is arguably the most famous of his stories; however, "The Nameless City" is considered by scholars to be the first tale of Lovecraft's Cthulu Mythos. It is also the introduction of Abdul Alhazred, the infamous author of the legendary Necromonicon.
3. In Dostoyevsky's "The House of the Dead" how long was Aleksandr Petrovich Goryanchikov's prison sentence?

Answer: Ten years

While Dostoyevsky's sentence was four years, his character received a much harsher ten years of hard labor in the Siberian prison camps.
4. What peasant in Gogol's "Dead Souls" was said to resemble a bear?

Answer: Sobakevich

Indeed it is said that he was a veritable bear. The rest of his name, Mikhailo Semyonich, actually contains the Russian name for bear ie: mikhail/mikhailo.
5. How was the courageous hero Roland from "The Song of Roland" related to King Charlemagne?

Answer: Nephew

Roland indeed was Charlemagne's nephew and his dearest relative.
6. In Soren Kierkgaard's "Either/Or" under what pseudonym did he compose the first half, "Either"?

Answer: A

The first half "Either" (which focuses on aesthetics) was written under the pseudonym of A while the second half "Or" (which focused on ethics) was created while Kierkgaard posed as B, or better known as Judge Vilhelm.
7. The epic work composed by Virgil, "The Aeneid" focused upon the son of Aphrodite, Aeneas. In the epic who was his lover whom he betrayed by leaving her in Carthage?

Answer: Dido

The story was written during the Roman reign of Augustus after the Punic Wars. Aeneas would later go on to build Rome according to some legends. As demonstrated by the Punic Wars the Romans and Carthaginians hated each other. So it is quite possible that Virgil wanted to put a romantic reason behind the disputes.
8. Ivan Turgenev's famed nihilistic character in "Fathers and Sons", Bazarov, studied what subject?

Answer: Natural Science

Bazarov was quite the genius and was interested in many subjects, but he excelled at the natural sciences and went to college to study it.
9. Who said "Hell is other people."?

Answer: Sartre

This is possibly one of his most well known quotes and was contained in the play/book "No Exit".
10. What Russian literary mastermind said "Whoever conquers pain and fear he himself will be God"?

Answer: Dostoyevsky

This radical expression was used by a character who was an aspiring philosopher in a text known by many names. These titles include "Demons", "The Possessed", and "Devils".
