1. What is the name of Morgarath's former fief, when he was still a baron?

Answer: Gorlan

Morgarath is the Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night. Whilst he lives in the area that was once the beautiful fief of Gorlan, he has turned it into a bleak, rainswept and cursed domain.

2. Why was Will so nervous in the start of the book?

Answer: The next day would be Choosing Day.

It was Choosing Day. Choosing Day was the day that the 15 year old orphans of Redmont Castle were given the choice to choose the career they wanted to follow. Will wanted to go to Battle School, but was nervous they would say no because he was small for his age.

3. In what order from tallest to smallest are the wardmates?

Answer: Horace, Alyss, George, Jenny and Will

During the Choosing, Martin made all the kids line up from tallest to smallest. Will, being the smallest, went to the back of the line. Jenny offered to let Will go in front of her, but Martin would not have it. Will is slightly ashamed of being the smallest.

4. There are many reasons why people fear Halt. Which is NOT a reason?

Answer: He is a drunko, who beats up people who got in his way.

Whilst Halt is a mysterious Ranger, he would never get drunk then hurt people from the village. Evil may get a slashing though.

5. Why did Will break into the Baron's office?

Answer: To see the note that Halt had given Arald.

During the Choosing, Halt gave Baron Arald a note, but didn't tell Will. The anticipation about what was written on the note was eating Will. He just had to find out. So he climbed up the castle walls and hopped into the Baron's room, just in time for Halt.

6. Once at Halt's cottage, Halt got Will to do a few jobs. Which of these jobs didn't he do?

Answer: Sharpen the two knives.

When Will first arrived, he made the mistake of asking Halt what Rangers do. Halt's answer was housework. He then sent Will off doing a number of different chores. But by this time Will didn't know about the Ranger knives.

7. Who was apparently killed by a bear, in the letter that had been sent to Halt?

Answer: Lord Northolt

While the spring cleaning was being done by Will, Halt got a letter from the Ranger Corps that said "Lord Northolt is dead. Apparently killed by a bear last week while out hunting". Lord Northolt was the supreme commander on the King's army, but was never a character. The significance is in the way he died.

8. There are 50 fiefs in Araluen. How many are accompanied by one member of the Ranger force?

Answer: Every fief has its own Ranger.

150 years ago during the reign of King Herbert, he established the Ranger corps. One member for each fiefdom. So 50 fiefs, 50 Rangers.

9. What were the names of the three boys who made Horace's time in Battleschool a living hell?

Answer: Bryn, Alda and Jerome

Bryn, Alda and Jerome were all older than Horace, second year cadets in fact. Horace thought it was normal for the older students to boss younger ones around. But in the end they went too far and they got a big pay back.

10. What type of bow is Will's special one?

Answer: Recurve Bow.

Will is only 15, and is not big enough to handle a great long bow. Luckily Halt knew how to make a recurve bow. He learned how when fighting the Temujai. But you'll learn about them more in later books.
