Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. DI John Rebus was based in Edinburgh, however after his success in catching a serial killer, he was drafted in to help catch a murderer in another city in the novel 'Tooth & Nail'. Which other city?

Answer: London

Rebus did not even have time to drop his cases off at the hotel after arriving by train in London and getting dragged to the scene of another murder, the fourth of its kind.
2. What was the name given by the Press to the serial killer in 'Tooth & Nail'?

Answer: Wolfman

Post-mortem examinations had shown that after stabbing his victims to death, the Wolfman had left bite marks on their bodies.
3. What was the name of the detective in charge of the serial killer case John Rebus was called in to help investigate in 'Tooth & Nail'?

Answer: Detective Inspector George Flight

Flight had been responsible for calling in John Rebus after the investigation into the murders of three women had apparently stalled.
4. What were the names of the lead pathologist and his assistant in 'Tooth & Nail'?

Answer: Phillip Cousins and Isobel Penny

"Philip Cousins was not just a Home Office Pathologist: he was by far the best Home Office Pathologist", noted Ian Rankin. He always called his assistant by her surname.
5. Which of these was a common factor surrounding the deaths of the victims in 'Tooth & Nail'?

Answer: They were all killed north of the river

The victims were a prostitute, an office manager, an off-licence assistant and and unemployed woman. They were found in differing locations, but all north of the Thames.
6. Working in a strange city had some compensations for John Rebus in the attractive form of Liz Frazer. What nationality was she?

Answer: Canadian

When she introduced herself, Liz Frazer said she had a Ph.D and taught psychology at University College. She offered to help profile the killer.
7. John Rebus's ex-wife and their daughter made a reappearance in the novel 'Tooth & Nail'. By this stage, the young teenage girl had a boyfriend. What was his line of employment?

Answer: A motorcycle messenger

Rebus, of course, took an instant dislike to Kenny and was quick to show him up. His wife hated him for it, and his daughter was embarrassed. "He [Rebus] began to feel a little bit ashamed. Kenny was too easy a target. He'd crushed a tiny fly beneath a tower block of resentment", Ian Rankin noted.
8. Detective Inspector John Rebus had a hobby, or so we learnt in 'Tooth & Nail'. What was it?

Answer: Collecting books

"He collected books. It was just about his only hobby. Not that he was precious about it. He did not lust after first editions, signed copies and the like. Mostly, he bought paperbacks. And he was nothing if not catholic in his tastes; any subject matter would do," noted Ian Rankin.

Some readers might have thought that drinking beer in dives and 1960s rock music were also hobbies of Rebus.
9. A lawyer played a key role in 'Tooth & Nail'. What was his name?

Answer: Chambers

Rebus first encountered Chambers at an Old Bailey trial, at which the QC (Queen's Counsel) was the prosecutor. Chambers was "dressed immaculately with the glow of the righteous upon him...He reminded Rebus of how television liked to think of QCs, Rumpole aside".
10. As 'Tooth & Nail' reaches its dramatic conclusion, Detective Inspector John Rebus hijacked a Jaguar limousine to pursue the killer. Who did the car belong to?

Answer: A judge

As the pieces fell into place, Rebus developed a gut feeling as to the identity of the killer, and realised he was in the company of the psychologist and intended to make her his next victim. Arriving at the place he knew them to be, Rebus saw them drive off and jumped behind the wheel of a car to give chase.

It was a few moments before he realised that the judge was in the back seat. What followed was a hair-raising chase through the centre of London before Rebus - naturally - got his killer.
