Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whose marriage is "celebrated" in the book?

Answer: Donncan and Bronwen

Donncan and Bronwen are cousins who are both legal heirs to the throne! To settle the kingdom, Lachlan arranged the betrothal between them at a very young age. When Lachlan took over rightful inheritance of the kingdom his son Donncan was then rivalled by his slightly elder cousin Bronwen whose father was Righ of all Eileanan, and brother to Lachlan, and died shortly after her birth. Bronwen and Donncan were once great friends, but began to grow apart as they got older, due mostly to Neil's interference and Bronwen's behaviour.

They do love each other dearly but have never fully embraced the fact; their wedding day is not the most romantic day in history, and Donncan barely acknowledges her after they have a fight the night before.
2. How does Lachlan die?

Answer: shot by a poisonous barb

The ghost of Margrit of Arran is possessing her daughter in-law Elfrida (Neil's mother). She tells Elfrida that she must kill Lachlan, which will end the revenge that Margrit had with the MacCuinn family. She gives Elfrida one of her devices that she was very fond of that has a hidden compartment, and in it places poisonous barbs made by the bogfaeries of the marshes of their homeland. With these Elfrida shoots the barb across the hall and kills Lachlan in an instant...unfortunately just before he is about to give Rhiannon a royal pardon.
3. Who is kidnapped on the night of Lachlan's death?

Answer: Donncan, Olwynne, Owein, and Roden

The MacCuinn family is disintegrated within a night when Lachlan is killed and his and Iseult's children are stolen away! Iseult is devastated by her loss and is then tied up in a web of grief and lets her talent run wild, creating an instant storm of frost and snow.
Donncan is taken by Johanna, Olywnne and Owein are taken along with Roden with the Laird of Fettercairn to resurrect the dead ghost of lady Margrit and then on to Ravenshaw to raise the Laird's brother and nephew.
4. Who was involved in the kidnapping of four main characters?

Answer: The Laird of Fettercairn and Johanna

The evil Laird of Fettercairn believes this is the perfect revenge on Lachlan by stealing away his family! He is maddened by his years of necromancy and will stop at nothing until he has his way!

Unfortunately for Johanna in her grief at the loss of her brother she betrays Donncan and steals him away. Which will be found out later.
5. Who is recruited to save those who have been kidnapped?

Answer: Finn the Cat and Jay the Fiddler

Finn and Jay are in the Shining City with the evidence for Rhiannon's trial. When Lachlan is killed and his children stolen away, Iseult asks Finn to go in search of them. Finn's talent is seeking and they say the cat always finds what it hunts! Finn and Jay are surviving members of the League of the Healing Hand...and are married. (That's another good story from the last series!)
6. Who betrays Isabeau and Iseult?

Answer: Johanna

Johanna betrays both of the twins. She betrays Isabeau's trust by sneaking into Isabeau's quarters and reading from the Keybearers's Book of Shadows. In this she gains what the Laird of Fettercairn wants which is the spell of resurrection! Brann the Raven set a spell of compulsion so that whoever read it would be compelled to return to the time of his death and bring him back to life.

This is how Johanna betrays Iseult, as she takes Donncan her eldest born and plans to use his body to bring Brann back.
7. When Rhiannon was finally about to be pardoned, Lachlan was killed. So she takes matters in her own hands and escapes prison, only to be caught by Iseult who called the Dragon to her as she believed Rhiannon escaped after she had killed Lachlan. She is set to hang at the dawn bell. How does Lewen save her?

Answer: ties himself to the bell

Lewen learns of Rhiannon's fate when the little bluebird flies in distressed and he takes it to Nina. Nina tells him and then they rush around trying to save Rhiannon by going to Iseult...who insists that they must seek a pardon from the new Banrigh (Bronwen).

The claurican Brun tells Lewen a riddle with the key line being "still its tongue and it cannot speak". When Lewen finally realises what it means he runs to the morning bell Aingeal, and ties himself to it stilling its tongue when the old bell ringer rings it for dawn...nearly killing himself in the process! How romantic!
8. How does Rhiannon repay Lewen?

Answer: pleasures him

Rhiannon thinks Lewen does not love her as he never shows up to her celebration party! When she finds out that Lewen is bed ridden after what he has done for her, she fulfills all her obligations and goes to his chambers! She jumps into bed while he is asleep and they make love.

Afterward Lewen feels like he has betrayed both Rhiannon and Olwynne because at this stage in the book he and Olwynne have jumped the fire (meaning engaged) and he feels like he has betrayed his love for her. Rhiannon makes a promise that she will save Olwynne just so that she can bring her back so she can break the spell she has over Lewen. Lewen still believes that it is not a spell; Rhiannon isn't fooled.
9. How does Rhiannon help Bronwen?

Answer: Goes after the Laird of Fettercairn

Bronwen and Rhiannon have the same idea. And when Rhiannon goes to tell Bronwen that she is leaving right away, Bronwen was actually calling her to ask her if she would go! Rhiannon becomes Bronwen's Yeo-women (personal guard) and flies off on Blackthorn after the evil Laird and his minions.
10. What are Lewen's last words to Rhiannon in the book?

Answer: "Come back to me"

This is the moment Lewen realises that his love for Rhiannon grows deeper than the surface! Her love is in his heart and will never be lost.
Lewen and Rhiannon share a passionate kiss before she takes off and both of them will never forget what lies behind it!
