Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who are Sadie's parents?

Answer: George and Lily

George and Lily Wilson are two of the biggest 'rotters' in any of Joan's books - they are cruel and abusive to all six of their children.
2. When Sadie gets her first pair of new (to her) shoes from the market, what colour are they?

Answer: Black with a silver buckle

They are black patent leather with a high heel, and an ankle strap with a silver buckle. Sadie has to 'learn to walk' all over again as she has never had a pair of heels before. They are the first decent pair of shoes she's ever owned and she loves them.
3. What does Harry buy from Sadie for sixpence?

Answer: A kiss

Harry finds Sadie crying when her Mam spends all her wages and won't give her any money, and says he will buy a kiss for sixpence. He says that it has to be "one of his famous smackeroos" as a peck isn't worth the full sixpence.
4. How much does Mary Ann charge for an item "without a hole"?

Answer: Thruppence

Items from Mary Ann's stall are "tuppence with a hole, thruppence without" and then Sadie starts her "superior quality sixpence" items too.
5. Which food item does their father torment baby Sally with?

Answer: Fried egg and bread

He has fried eggs and bread, and when Sally asks for some he holds it out then snatches it away, and laughs when she cries. (I told you he was a rotter!)
6. When Dot is finally made to get a job, what sort of factory does she go to work at?

Answer: Cigarette

Once Sadie has left home and her wages no longer arrive each week, Lily makes Dot get a job in the cigarette factory to make up the money.
7. Who lives next door to Sadie's adopted grandparents' house?

Answer: Peter Townley

Peter becomes Sadie's neighbour when she moves in with Sarah and Joe, her 'adopted' grandparents, and drives her mad by popping up every time she leaves the house. Sadie realises he is only annoying because he reminds her of Harry and how much she misses him, and eventually they become friends.
8. What toys does Sadie's 'Grandad' find to hang on the Christmas tree?

Answer: Lead soldiers

Joe has kept a box of lead soldiers that he painted for his sons, in the wardrobe for 50 years. Both of Sarah and Joe's sons died in infancy, and they kept the soldiers to remind them of their boys.
9. What does Sadie eat for dessert at her very first meal in her adoptive grandparents' home?

Answer: Rice pudding

Sarah makes stew followed by rice pudding and Sadie is overwhelmed as she has never had rice pudding before, and can only just remember her mother cooking 'proper dinners' when she was a tiny child.
10. What does Sadie push into Harry's face at the fairground?

Answer: Candy floss

Harry takes Sadie to the fair on her birthday and tricks her by pretending to chew on the candy floss. Sadie has never tried it before and can't work out why she isn't "getting anything" when she tries to take a bite.
11. Who is Sadie's youngest brother?

Answer: Les

Sadie has two brothers; Jimmy is 12 and Les is 9. Her sisters are Dot, Ellen and baby Sally.
12. Which dance are Sadie and Tommy doing when he drops her on her behind on the dance floor?

Answer: Tango

Tommy and Spike both claim to be good dancers when Sadie agrees to go with them, but alas, it isn't true. Tommy manages to drop Sadie in front of everyone in the dance hall, but luckily she sees the funny side.
13. What is Mary Ann's surname?

Answer: Worsley

Meeting Mary Ann turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to Sadie. She takes her under her wing and helps her escape from her dreadful parents and make a new life for herself, and later on, for her siblings.
14. How many sixpences are in the bag that Harry gives Sadie when he finally finds her again?

Answer: 50

There are 50 sixpences, one for each week they've been apart.
15. What does Sadie buy Mary Ann for Christmas?

Answer: A pretty scarf

She is torn between a tortoise shell comb for her hair and the scarf, but plumps for the scarf on the advice of Sarah and Joe.
