Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the names of the original six Same Sweet Girls?

Answer: Corrine, Julia, Astor, Lanier, Byrd and Dixie Lee

Corrine and Lanier were former room-mates, as were Julia and Astor. Byrd and Dixie Lee were close but Dixie Lee is the first to "leave" the group, later being replaced by Rosanelle.
2. The story is told by three of the women in first-person, alternating chapters. Which three women tell the story?

Answer: Corrine, Lanier, and Julia

Even though the book is about all six of the girls, the storyline follows one incident in particular which mainly involves Corrine, Lanier and Julia, therefore tying them together and letting the reader have a three-point perspective on the story.
3. The Same Sweet Girls have a nickname for themselves. What is it?

Answer: The SSGs

The sixth "honorary" member, Rosanelle, unknowingly gave them the name of "The Same Sweet Girls" during a speech she was making as an alumnus at the college that the original six attended. She travelled the world and upon wrapping up her speech, she insisted she was "the same, sweet girl." This caused the six girls to laugh and consequently be punished...together. From then on, they remained friends.
4. Corrine is a renowned artist of the south and specializes in an art form a little out of the ordinary. What is her medium?

Answer: gourds

Corrine studied Native Americans in college and their use of gourds in sacred rituals. This is one of the main themes that she uses for her gourds. She meditates with them and swears they "speak" to her, allowing her to create the perfect scene/picture for a specific gourd.
5. The Same Sweet Girls meet twice a year, on an island in the early summer and in the mountains in the fall. Both places are the homes of two of the women. Which two women are they?

Answer: Lanier and Corrine

Corrine owns a cabin in Blue Mountain, Georgia. That house was left to her by her old art teacher from college, Mrs. Fielding. Lanier's house (Dolphin Cove) is located in Dauphin Island, Alabama. It was an old fishing cabin where her family spent most of their summers.
6. What handicap does Julia and Joe Ed's child, Bethany, have?

Answer: partially deaf and partially blind

Bethany uses hearing aids and can speak, even though it's choppy and hard to understand if a person is not used to it. She's partially blind but can see things such as fireflies when it's dark. She is admitted to the Helen Keller Institute and is eighteen.
7. During the summer that takes place in this novel, a new queen is pronounced. Which woman is announced the new queen?

Answer: Astor

Julia was the reigning queen of two years. The women have a full weekend of ceremonies and rituals, complete with a "throne" (an old, converted and decorated toilet), a crown bought at Mardi Gras encrusted with rhinestones, a sceptre made from a drum majorette baton decorated with streamers, cotton bolls and sugar cubes, and a cape.
8. Corrine and her ex-husband, Miles, met under different circumstances than a woman and man both looking for someone to be with. What was the nature of their first "relationship"?

Answer: patient/therapist

After Corrine's attempt at suicide, she was assigned a therapist, who was Miles. The attraction was there immediately but it was several sessions before anything physical occurred. Miles was possessive, controlling and sadistic in his marriage to Corrine.
9. What is the name of the man that Lanier had an affair with, causing her divorce from Paul?

Answer: Roland Pierce

Roland Pierce was a friend of Paul's and when Lanier goes to a seminar in Birmingham, she stays with Astor. They end up having dinner (Astor, Lanier and Roland) at Astor's place. Roland asks Lanier out for dinner for the following night and she accepts with much prodding from Astor. She got drunk and ended up sleeping with him.
10. When Julia gets fed up with life, she escapes to a lake house on Lake Martin that was given to her and Joe Ed as a wedding present. Who gave them the house?

Answer: Joe Ed's father

Joe Ed's father bought the house because it was falling into disrepair. He planned to fix it up and use it.
