"A Christmas Carol", in which we make the acquaintance of Ebenezer Scrooge, is surely the best known and loved. It is divided into five chapters called staves, to fit in with the title.

Scrooge at first persists in regarding the ghost as a hallucination caused by indigestion. He has to change his mind when the ghost's predictions are fulfilled.
