Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following actions does Antonio take in the play "Much Ado About Nothing"?

Answer: Antonio gives his niece to Claudio for marriage.

Antonio plays along with the Friar's plan in the last scene, presenting his niece Hero as his own daughter to be married to Claudio, who must marry her sight unseen. Antonio is furious for the wrongs commited to Hero in the Chapel scene, but it is Claudio that he makes the fight offer to rather than Don Pedro.

In the party scene, Antonio flirts with Ursula rather than Beatrice. And finally, it is the poor Sexton, not Antonio, who has to suffer through Dogberry's mangling of the English language while arraigning Borachio.
2. Which of the following statements is true about Antonio in "The Taming of the Shrew"?

Answer: Antonio is the father of Petruchio.

Antonio is Petruchio's father, who dies before the play begins. Petruchio's father was well known, and the source of Petrichio's fortune.
3. Which of the following most accurately describes the Antonio featured in "The Tempest"?

Answer: Antonio remains recalcitrant and remorseless when Prospero releases him.

The three other choices are blatantly false. Antonio, who usurped his brother Prospero so many years ago, says absolutely nothing as Prospero forgives him and his compatriots for the earlier crimes, rather than take revenge. Antonio's action is important in the play as it shows some people are unwilling or unable to change, and that forgiveness can fall on essentially deaf ears to some people.
4. The Antonio from this play, with the encouragement of a friend, arranges for his son to go to the Emperor's court. Which play does this action occur in?

Answer: The Two Gentlemen of Verona

In the only scene in which he appears, Proteus' father Antonio arranges to have his son go to the Emperor's court, which allows Proteus to meet up again with Valentine and leads to his infatuation with the lady Silvia.
5. Which of the following best describes the Antonio found in "Twelfth Night"?

Answer: Antonio is charged with stealing cargo from a ship called the "Phoenix".

This is the charge the First Officer levels at Antonio when he is brought to Duke Orsino in Act Five. In addition to this charge, the officer intimates that Antonio was present when Orsino's nephew Titus lost his leg during the events of that crime. Antonio rescued Sebastian instead of Viola from the shipwreck. Feste calls himself "Sir Topas, the curate" to Malvolio. Antonio fights off Toby and Andrew as a complication to the "duel" between Viola and Andrew.
6. Which of the following statements is true about Antonio in "The Merchant of Venice"?

Answer: Shylock accuses Antonio of spitting on his gaberdine.

Shylock is Gobbo's master. Portia's father devised the love test. Antonio has berated Shylock in the past over Shylock's usury, and indeed is accused by Shylock of spitting on his gaberdine. Finally, Antonio's disposition could be described as resigned, melancholy, loyal, but "merry" certainly doesn't apply to him throughout the play.
7. The sea often appears when Shakespeare has an Antonio in the cast. Which Antonio appears to be the exception to this rule?

Answer: Antonio from "Much Ado About Nothing"

Though there may well be a sea coast in Messina, Leonato's brother Antonio appears to have nothing to do with it in this play. The other three have a much more direct parallel, with the Antonio from "Twelfth Night" being a sailor, Antonio from "The Merchant of Venice" having lost (and recovered) his mercantile vessels at sea, and finally Antonio is personally affected by the tempest which serves as the title to the play he is in.
8. Antonio is to Bassanio as Antonio is to ? Which of the following creates the strongest comparison?

Answer: Sebastian

Bassanio and Sebastian are both young men that their respective Antonios have befriended and supported in various means. They are also the comparison which does not refer to a familial linkage. Prospero and Leonato are brothers to their Antonio, and Proteus is Antonio's son.
9. Of the following Antonios, which one's mortal condition is unique to the group?

Answer: Antonio in "The Taming of the Shrew"

The Antonio from "The Taming of the Shrew" has passed away. Another characteristic separating him from the other Antonios is that he is the only one in the group that does not actually appear as a character in the play in which he is mentioned.
10. Based on the endings of their respective plays, which of the following Antonios is in the worst situation by the time the play ends?

Answer: Antonio in "The Tempest"

Of the four, Antonio in "The Tempest" is in the worst position, as Prospero is leaving the island to regain his power as Duke of Milan. Antonio in "The Merchant of Venice" has three of his ships miraculously dock via Portia's letter, and his life has been spared. "Much Ado About Nothing"'s Antonio gains a son in law, and, more importantly, his niece's honor has been restored. And, in "Twelfth Night", Antonio is released from his incarceration to join in the wedding celebrations.
