Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the movie, a newly-arrived convict is killed by the captain of the guards. In the short story or novelet "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" (there's no "the" in the title), there is no such incident. What caused the guard to beat the convict?

Answer: the convict kept crying that he was innocent

This was the man Heywood bet would be the first to break; it didn't take long, although Heywood helped him along.
2. Brooks Hatlen is a much more important character in the movie than he was in the book. For example, in the book he doesn't have a pet. What pet does he have in the movie?

Answer: a crow

In the book, another con named Sherwood Bolton has a pigeon named Jake. Brooks feeds his pet crow Jake a grub Andy found in his food in the mess hall. The scene where Brooks sets his pet free is very touching. Bolton's pigeon dies soon after he sets it free, but the fate of Jake the crow is not shown.
3. Red tells us that the "sisters" attacked and abused Andy, but in the movie he never says whether he himself had been a victim of the sisters. In the book, does he say he was one of their victims?

Answer: Yes

He tells us that they had gotten him too when he was new at the prison.
4. In the film, there was only one warden during Andy's time at the prison. How many were there in the book?

Answer: 3

Andy was in Shawshank from 1947 (movie) or 1948 (book) until the mid-seventies. It's not likely there would have been only one warden in all that time. According to Brooks Hatlen, there were six wardens from 1905 to about 1950. Actually, dramatically, it made more sense to have one warden so his character could be fully developed (and beautifully played by Bob Gunton).
5. In the movie, when Andy gets the men their famous beer break, one man offers Andy a beer, and Andy says he "gave up drinkin'." Did Andy drink in the book?

Answer: Yes

Andy took a few slugs of Jack Daniel's on his birthday, Christmas, and New Year's Eve, but there's no mention of his having a beer.
6. Andy and Red play checkers in the movie, and Andy decides to a set of playing pieces out of rocks. What game do they play in the book?

Answer: none

No game playing is mentioned in the book. In the movie, when the men are working outside the prison, Red has the men looking for appropriate rocks for carving.
7. Red gets the famous Rita Hayworth poster for Andy, although he has no idea what the poster is really for. In the movie, the men watch a Rita Hayworth movie. Andy says he's seen it three times and then asks Red for the poster. What movie was it?

Answer: Gilda

The movie scene is not in the book. Rita was in all of these movies, but the men were watching "Gilda" (1946), in which she co-starred with Glenn Ford and George Macready. She was born Margarita Cansino in Brooklyn in 1918 and was a natural brunette and a dye-job redhead, although it was hard to tell on screen.

She was one of the most glamorous stars of the 1940s, rivaling Betty Grable as top "pin-up" girl. In 1949, she married international playboy Prince Aly Khan. It was a marriage the tabloid press just ate up. Gilda Radner was born in 1946, and she was named after Hayworth's character. (obits.com/radnergilda.html)
8. In the movie, the "sisters" finally let Andy alone after Bogs, their leader, is so badly beaten he is unable to walk for the rest of his life. In the movie, the guards beat Bogs. Who does it in the book?

Answer: some convicts

In the book, Red is not certain but believes that, after the "sisters" beat Andy so badly he had to stay in the hospital for a long time, Andy hired some of the other convicts to do the same for Bogs, but they went a little further. Guess they didn't like Bogs much, either.
9. In the movie, Andy tells Red he has set up a fictitious identity in the name of Randall Stevens and that a good amount of money has been invested in "Stevens'" name. What was the name of the fictitious man in the book?

Answer: Peter Stevens

A small difference, but a bigger one related to this is coming.
10. There's a scene in the movie where librarian Brooks Hatlen threatens to cut Heywood's throat unless the parole board lets Hatlen stay in prison. Is there a scene like this in the book? Yes or no.

Answer: No

This was part of the screenwriter (Frank Darabont, who also directed) expanding the Hatlen character, which added quite a bit to the movie. For example, the scene where Hatlen hangs himself in the Brewer Hotel is a foreshadowing of what might have happened to Red had it not been for Andy.
11. In the movie, Red eventually tells Andy why he was sentenced to Shawshank Prison. He tells him he committed murder but gives no details. The only other clue is when Red says in the narration, "I did a terrible thing." In the book, he tells us how many people he killed. How many was it?

Answer: 3

At age 20, he decided to kill his wife so he could collect the insurance, so he sabotaged the brakes on their car. Unfortunately, his wife picked up a neighbor and her infant child and all three were killed.
12. One of the most beautiful scenes in the movie is the one where Andy plays a recorded operatic aria over the PA system and the men listen to it as if entranced. In the book, what kind of music does Andy play?

Answer: none; the scene was invented for the movie

This is another example of expanding the story for the film, and it worked perfectly. The piece was "The Marriage of Figaro/Duettino Sull'aria" by some guy named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. (Thank you, Mr. Darabont!)
13. In the movie, warden Samuel Norton commits suicide when his crimes are exposed. Does this happen in the book?

Answer: No

One of the most satisfying scenes in the movie, in my opinion, is the one where the Portland newspaper publishes the evidence Andy sends them about the crimes and abuse at Shawshank Prison. This scene was added by the screenwriter (Darabont). In the book, after Andy escapes, the warden resigns, "a broken man" because he couldn't believe that Andy had fooled him so badly.
14. After his escape, Andy withdrew a substantial amount of money ($370,000) from the accounts of the fictional identity he had set up for himself. In the movie, it's the money the warden stole. True or false: In the book it was Andy's own money.

Answer: True

In the book, Andy tells Red he had a friend set up investments for him under a fictitious identity so he'd have something when he got out of prison. This is one reason why Andy has hope. I thought the movie version was much better. It was so great to see the warden get his!
15. The last scene of the novelet has Red traveling on the bus to find Andy. The movie has that scene also, but there's one more scene where Red finds Andy on a tropical beach working on a boat and they embrace. Truly a wonderful moment, but it's not in the book, and the scene wasn't filmed in Mexico. Where was it filmed?

Answer: the U.S. Virgin Islands

This beautiful movie was filmed in Ohio and the U.S. Virgin Islands, not in Maine and Mexico. The prison was Mansfield Correctional Institution in Mansfield, Ohio. I hope my quiz has added to your enjoyment of the book and/or the movie. Thanks for playing! See ya. Mickey.
