Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ray Kinsella hears a voice asking him to "ease his pain". Who does Ray believe this person is?

Answer: J. D. Salinger

Ray Kinsella after hearing "the voice", determines that the pain that must be eased is that of author J.D. Salinger. Ray does some research and finds that Salinger has stepped out of the public eye and once had a love for baseball. He had a love for the Polo Grounds, while in the movie it was Ebbets Field. For the movie, Ray went in search of Terence Mann. Truman Capote was mentioned in the book when a person mistook Salinger as the writer of "In Cold Blood", when they were on the way to Minnesota.
2. Ray sets out from his farm to what east coast location to find a famous author?

Answer: Windsor, Vermont

This town in Vermont was quite a drive from Boston after Ray persuaded Salinger to attend a game with him at Fenway Park. In the movie, the author's home was moved to within the Greater Boston area. Ray also received the same kind of comments from the people he asked for help on where the author's address might me, saying to Ray, "If he was much of a friend, he would have given better directions".
3. Does Ray stop anywhere to visit or stay in motels, on his way to the east coast, then to Minnesota and finally back to home in Iowa?

Answer: yes

After leaving the farm in Iowa, Ray makes it across the state of Illinois and his first stop, Wrigley Field. The Chicago Cubs are on the road, so he heads to the south side and attends a Chicago White Sox game. He then drives into Ohio and see's the Indians play in Cleveland. Feeling tired after all of the driving, Ray stays in a motel outside of Pittsburgh. Continuing on his baseball journey, Ray makes his way to New York City to see the Yankees play.

After picking up Salinger and seeing the Red Sox compete, they decide to stop in Cooperstown, New York to verify the facts of Archibald "Moonlight" Graham at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

After picking up the younger Graham, the three men stop in the twin cities to see the home of the Minnesota Twins. Like the Cubs, the Twins are also on the road, so they decide to break into the stadium and walk and play on the field.

In the movie, money was a crucial factor for even making this trip. Ray told Annie that he would cut expenses by sleeping in the van to save money.
4. How many people were in the Datsun when Ray brought the author to the farm the first time?

Answer: Four

The four people in the car were Ray Kinsella, J.D. Salinger, Archibald Graham and Eddie Scissons. On the way into town, Ray decided to stop at the home for older residents and pick up the former owner of his farm. Eddie was known around town as "the oldest living Chicago Cub". Ray had kept it a secret for the past few years how he had built a baseball field on Eddie's old farm. Ray secretly thought maybe the magic of the field would disappear if Eddie showed up.

He also wondered if Eddie would be one of the lucky ones to be able to see the players.

The Datsun was replaced by a Volkswagen Van for the movie.
5. Did the newest people brought to the field get to see a game with Shoeless Joe Jackson that day?

Answer: No

Since Ray had been gone for a couple of weeks on his baseball journey, the field had gotten into bad shape and needed some work done to it. With everyone helping out with the mowing of the grass and the pulling of the weeds, the field was finally ready for some old time players to appear again.

While in the movie, the players entered the field from the corn fields, the players in the book used a door located in center field. The movie version had all of the players warming up to play that night's game when the vehicle pulled up in the long drive of the farm.
6. When did Archibald "Moonlight" Graham play his one game in the major leagues?

Answer: June 29th

The movie has Graham being called up to the majors, and on the last day of the season, finally getting to play late in the game. The game played on the 29th of June featured the Brooklyn Dodgers against Graham's New York Giants.
7. Where did Ray build his bleachers to watch the games?

Answer: Behind left field

The book had the bleachers built in left field to be closer to Shoeless Joe Jackson, who would be playing right in front of them. For the movie, the bleachers were built on the first base side.
8. Who did Ray and the other fans of baseball get to see play?

Answer: White Sox and Cubs

To the delight of Eddie Scissons, they got to witness a game between the disgraced White Sox players and a Chicago Cubs team that featured Mordecai "Three Fingers" Brown pitching. It had been suggested that Eddie had made up the story of his playing days with the Cubs.

But there, late in the game, a younger Scissons entered the game as a relief pitcher. Red Sox versus Oakland A's was the movie version game for the one attended by Ray and Terence at Fenway Park while the book had the Red Sox playing the Minnesota Twins.
9. Did Annie call for an ambulance when Karin fell?

Answer: Yes

Even though it would have been about a twenty minute wait, Annie did go up to the house and call for help. The movie had Ray telling her to wait as he noticed something was going to happen when Archibald Graham stepped forward. Both versions had the young Archie transform into the older Dr. Graham with black medical bag in hand.
10. Who could not see the field till the end of the game and was very surprised to see he was related to the catcher?

Answer: Richard Kinsella

Richard Kinsella was the twin brother of Ray and the one who got in an argument with their father. He had left their Montana home as a result of this and had not kept in touch. The side show carnival that Richard was working with just happened to show up in Iowa while Ray was travelling to Vermont and Minnesota. Even though Ray had seen his dad playing in several of the games, he had never attempted to speak with him before he exited the field. Sitting in the bleachers with his twin brother who could not see the games made it a little harder to take. Finally at the conclusion of a game, Ray and Richard step down to a sight Richard's eyes had not yet seen.

A stadium, baseball players and his father under the catcher's mask. If you build it, he will come.
