Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Time Windows" by Katherine Reiss. When in looking through the window of the dollhouse, which two families can Miranda observe?

Answer: Galworthys and Kramers

The magic of the dollhouse in Kathryn Reiss's "Time Windows" allows Miranda to peek into the Galworthy and Kramer families' lives. This is a great book, highly recommended to anyone liking a suspenseful thrilling book!
2. "Escape From Memory" by Margaret Peterson Haddix. What is the war-torn civilization that Kira's alleged "Aunt Memory" took her to?

Answer: Crythe

Kira was taken to Crythe to save her mother but ends up in more danger than she expected, eventually putting her mother's and her own life on the line. A great book by my absolute favorite author and full of adventure! The "Shadow Children" series by Margaret Peterson Haddix is also recommended.
3. "The City of Ember" by Jeanne DuPrau. What was special about the city of Ember?

Answer: The sky was always dark.

The sky was always dark in Ember, and the dim lights that they did have were not always working due to problems with the old generators. This is the first book in the "Book of Ember" series by Jeanne DuPrau and a VERY good book.
4. "Stranded" by Ben Mikaelsen. What does Koby call her artificial leg?

Answer: Leggy

In the book "Stranded," Koby called her artificial leg, which she had lost in an accident while riding her bike, "leggy". She often tried to hide her "leggy" but finds a new perspective at the end of the book. A heartwarming book.
5. "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Munoz Ryan. When was Esperanza allowed to see Miguel?

Answer: When she became poor.

Esperanza was not allowed to see Miguel when she was rich because, "they were on the other side of the river," referring to their social class. Later, she became poor and they were allowed to see each other. I personally like the romantic side to this story but it has a sort of riches to rags plot line.
6. "Bloomability" by Sharon Creech. In which city in Switzerland is Dinnie taken to?

Answer: Lugano

Dinnie's Aunt Sandy and Uncle Max took her to Lugano, Switzerland. There, she attended a boarding school. At the time "Bloomability" was written, Sharon Creech was teaching at an American International school in Montagnola, Switzerland near Lugano.
7. "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madaline L'Engle. How is a tesseract demonstrated in this book?

Answer: An ant on a string.

In "A Wrinkle in Time" a tesseract is explained using an ant on a string. For those who haven't read it, this is a very good book (the first in a series). For those not fimilar with the idea of a tesseract, it is a generalization of a cube to four dimensions.
8. "Ella Enchanted" by Gail Carson Levine. At the end of the book, Olive marries a count. For what reasons did she marry him?

Answer: food and money

In "Ella Enchanted," the very dreaded Olive eventually marries for food and money. Olive's sister, Hattie, never marries, and Ella lives happily ever after with Char. Also a highly recomended book. Unfortunately, they did a horrid job of the movie "Ella Enchaunted".
9. "Holes" by Louis Sachar Who actually stole Sweet Feet's shoes?

Answer: Zero

In Louis Sachar's book "Holes", Stanley is wrongfully prosecuted for stealing the shoes of Mr. Sweet Feet, a major leauge baseball star. In the end it is found through fate that Stanley and Zero were sent to the same correctional facility, Camp Greenlake, when Zero actually stole the shoes.

This book follows the main character of Stanley Yelnats IV and the outcast of the Tent D crew, Zero. There are many twists in this book and it is very exciting.
10. "Jayhawker" by Patricia Beatty. Why was Gideon one on the passwords?

Answer: It was John Brown's favorite biblical hero.

In "Jayhawker", Gideon is a password on the underground railroad because it was John Brown's favorite biblical hero. This password was used in saying it was your first name with the last name of either Nelson or Hawkins. This is a pretty good book if you're into historic fiction, although it is not well known.
