Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Select the correct word to complete the opening sentence of the first book: "The Man in Black fled across the desert and The Gunslinger _____."

Answer: Followed

From Book One, "The Gunslinger", first line from the first book for the first question.

The Man in Black goes by many names; some readers would know him as Flagg. Roland Deschain is The Gunslinger, the last of an ancient order of Knights, protectors of the white. The Man in Black promises to show the way to "The Dark Tower", only if The Gunslinger can catch him.
2. Where does the stand alone "Wind Through The Keyhole" (released well after the final book) fit chronologically?

Answer: Between Book Four, "Wizard and Glass", and Book Five, "Wolves of the Calla"

"The Wind through The Keyhole" is a story within a story within a story. If you are going to read just one "Dark Tower" book, give this one a go.

You can read it at any stage, but it picks up after the conclusion of "Wizard and Glass".
3. What number keeps mysteriously popping up on The Gunslinger's quest?

Answer: 19

The first significant mention of 19 is in Book One, "The Gunslinger", where the word nineteen was a key to unlock what Nort saw when he was dead. By Book Five, "Wolves of the Calla", Roland's ka-tet notice the number popping up enough to begin calling themselves the ka-tet of 19.

King opens Book Seven, "The Dark Tower", with an essay "On Being 19".
4. What entity related to "It" (aka Pennywise) does Roland encounter?

Answer: Dandelo

Dandelo and Pennywise are the same todash ilk, placing "It" in the same universe as "The Dark Tower". It would appear Dandelo is aware of his otherworldly cousin keeping a robot servant called Stuttering Bill.

Flagg is a recurring villain in many Stephen King works, appearing in "The Stand", "Eyes of the Dragon" and, of course, "The Dark Tower" series.

Mia is a succubus who so desperately wants to be a mother she gives up her immortality to be the surrogate of Mordred, taking on most of Susannah's pregnancy.

Tick-Tock Man was another name for Andrew Quick, leader of the Greys wanting to control the once great city of Ludd.
5. Who are the ka-tet of 19?

Answer: Roland Deschain, Jake Chambers, Eddie Dean, Oy, Susannah Dean, Father Callahan

Any group thrown together by fate for a common purpose are a ka-tet.

Bill Denbrough, Ben Hanscom, Bev Marsh, Richie Tozier, Eddie Kaspbrak, Mike Hanlon and Stan Uris are a ka-tet in their own right as they battle Pennywise in "It".

Eldred Jonas, that failed Gunslinger maggot sent west, leads the big coffin hunters ka-tet of Clay Reynolds and Roy Depape.

Roland Deschain, Cuthbert Allgood and Alain Johns are Roland's childhood ka-tet. Susan Delgado was Roland's first love; if it could have occurred to him Cuthbert would call her Yoko.
6. What does Roland lose on the beach of the Western Sea?

Answer: Index and middle finger of his right hand

The second book, "The Drawing of the Three", is when things really start moving. Finally out of the desert and mountains, Roland is attacked by lobstrosities only to lose said fingers, be mortally wounded and that's just the start.

Roland's Big Guns are never lost; he does, however, extend them to members of his ka-tet at various times.

We learn Roland has lost battles such as the Battle of Jericho Hill where he lost The Horn of Eld but it is back story, only touched upon in the novels.
7. What song is playing on the piano in Tull as Roland pursues The Man in Black?

Answer: Hey Jude

The Beatles' "Hey Jude" immediately links the unfamiliar environment of the vast Mid-World Mohaine Desert with our world.

AC/DC's "Who Made Who" is, in my mind, the highlight of Stephen King's "Maximum Overdrive" film. Hey it had to have something going for it.

And who can forget Sheena is a Punk Rocker coming from the truck driver's radio in "Pet Sematary"? Maybe if the driver wasn't so busy singing and dancing along to the Ramones it would have been a very different movie. Not sure I would watch it though.

"Blitzkrieg Bop" is also a Ramones classic.
8. You're a Breaker who has just escaped from Algul Siento. What should you be on the lookout for?

Answer: Any combination of these

All of these are signs the Taheen are closing in on your trail. "Low Men in Yellow Coats", a novella which is the first part of "Hearts in Atlantis", makes this book a stand alone "Dark Tower" and a must read if you're following the ka-tet of 19.
9. What is Sheemie's full name?

Answer: Stanley Ruiz

Roland introduces us to Good ol' Sheemie in Book Four, "Wizard and Glass", before we meet him again in Book Seven, "The Dark Tower".

Ted Brautigan first appears in "Heart's in Atlantis", then in Book Seven, "The Dark Tower".

Dinky Earnshaw we first meet in the titular story of "Everything's Eventual" then in Book Seven, "The Dark Tower".

Oy, our favourite billy-bumbler, first appears in Book Three, "The Waste Lands'.
10. Who wrote "Charlie the Choo-Choo" (purchased by Jake at The Manhattan Restaurant of the Mind)?

Answer: Beryl Evans

Beryl Evans is the author when Jake buys the book in New York.

In Mid-World the author is Claudia y Inez Bachman who in real/unreal terms was listed on cover jackets as the wife of Stephen King's pseudonym, Richard Bachman.

Did you notice Claudia's name has 19 characters? So does Charlie the Choo-Choo, come to think of it.
