Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "T is for Trespass," like many of the Kinsey Millhone stories, is set in a fictional coastal California town. What is it called?

Answer: Santa Teresa, California

Kinsey Millhone fans know that "Santa Teresa" is based on the real Santa Barbara, a beautiful coastal town about 90 minutes north of Los Angeles. Grafton has acknowledged that she is paying homage to mystery writer Ross Macdonald, who first used Santa Teresa as a stand-in for Santa Barbara.
2. In this story, something happened to one of Kinsey's neighbors and she and her landlord, Henry Pitts, tried to help the guy. What happened to him?

Answer: He fell down and needed assistance

Gus Vronsky, the neighborhood's cranky old man, had fallen in his house. Kinsey and her landlord, Henry, were outside when they heard moaning, which they followed to Gus's house. Gus and Henry had been friends and neighbors for a long time, and Henry had a key to Gus's house, which he used to open it up and help Gus.
3. Kinsey had to track down Gus's closest relative to help make decisions about his care. Who did she find?

Answer: Melanie, Gus's niece or grand-niece

Although Melanie mentions at one point that she is Gus's grand-niece, throughout the story others refer to her as his niece. She's the only living relative anyone could find. Melanie was a very busy New Yorker and coming to Gus's aid wasn't easy for her. But she did, and she stayed until she found suitable care for her uncle. Or so she thought.
4. Solana Rojas was hired to be Gus's caregiver. Was Solana her real name?

Answer: No

Solana Rojas was not the caregiver's real name -- we never learn the woman's real name for certain. She had worked with a woman named Solana Rojas and stolen her identity, including her driver's license, social security number, and employment references.
5. Solana's goal was to fleece Gus of everything he was worth, which she had done to previous victims. Gus didn't have much of value, she thought, and she was about to abandon the job when she learned something from Henry's lady friend, Charlotte Snyder. What did she learn about Gus from Charlotte?

Answer: His two real estate plots were worth plenty

Solana might have walked away had Charlotte, the persistent real estate agent, not told Solana that Gus's properties were worth a pretty penny to developers. Suddenly Solana changed her mind about leaving, and she quickly applied for a bank loan against the house in order to run away with the cash.
6. Kinsey didn't trust Solana from the start, but Solana proved to be a very tough adversary, perhaps Kinsey's toughest. What did Solana NOT do to discredit Kinsey to others?

Answer: Send a letter to the editor of the Santa Teresa Dispatch about Kinsey's character

Solana knew Kinsey had her number and systematically tried to damage her reputation. She also made sure no one could get close to Gus lest he tell anyone how Solana was mistreating him.
7. Kinsey was assisted by the relative of another of Solana's victims. They devised a plot to rescue Gus, but first they needed to get Solana out of the house. How did they do that?

Answer: Impersonated a bank officer calling to tell Solana she could pick up a large check

Peggy was the daughter of another of Solana's victims, and she helped rescue Gus. She called Solana at Gus's house and impersonated a bank officer, saying that Solana had a check waiting for her at the bank. As soon as Solana left, Peggy and Kinsey ran over to Gus's house to retrieve him.

It's a good thing this all took place in 1988, before Caller ID was widespread, or else this trick wouldn't have worked!
8. Kinsey won the battle by rescuing Gus and thwarting the remainder of Solana's plans. Solana, however, had to get her revenge, and so she sent her goon of a son after Kinsey. How did Kinsey manage to beat this violent giant in a street fight?

Answer: She drove off in her Mustang, though she took one of his body parts with her

It was a terrifying scene, with tough but small Kinsey against a criminally insane, emotionally disturbed giant. Kinsey just barely jumped into her car in time, but even that didn't stop the monster; he took a running leap and punched a hole through her glass window. She had little choice but to drive off, with a horrific result.
9. Although Solana seemed to disappear once Gus was rescued, Kinsey knew it wasn't over. She knew Solana would come after her for the death of Solana's son. Kinsey was set on alert when Solana had a manilla envelope delivered to Kinsey's office containing something scary. What was it?

Answer: big hairy tarantula

The scene where Kinsey opened a manilla envelope only to find a huge hairy live tarantula is a memorable one. If you are at all squeamish about spiders, you won't forget it. In another super creepy scene, Kinsey woke in the middle of the night to find Solana *in her bedroom staring at her in the dark.*
10. Kinsey knew she must find and confront Solana to end it once and for all. How did she find out where Solana was hiding, and, Kinsey learned, keeping Henry?

Answer: Tracked the location from a photograph Solana left on Kinsey's door

To draw Kinsey out, Solana left a picture of Kinsey on her early morning jog on Kinsey's front door. Super extra creepy. Kinsey retraced her steps and located where Solana must have been when she took the picture -- the corner suite of a newly-restored historic hotel. This is where they had their final confrontation. Fortunately, Kinsey saved Henry and the day.
