Terzah is fifteen when the story begins, although as a Har he is fully adult and a parent. Deria, who has no knowledge of Harish development, is amazed when Terzah tells her how old he is.

2. What is Illan (the harling) allowed to do for the first time on his Naming Day?

Answer: Set his feet on the ground

It is a tradition of Terzah's tribe that a harling should not set foot on the ground until he has been named ceremoniously. Illan is named after Terzah's hostling.

Answer: Deria's husband

Terzah discovers later that the man he killed and 'made an example of' by displaying his body in a grisly fashion, was Deria's husband - the father of David and Michael and Deria's unborn baby.

Deria has been adding poisonous mushrooms to all their food, in an attempt to get revenge for the death of her husband. She has no idea that Hara are immune to most poisons.
Strangely, her actions make Terzah like and respect her much more than before he knew. Her desire for revenge is in keeping with the traditions of his tribe.

The Kheops were Native Americans when their founders were human. After inception, they carried on all the old traditions of their culture, but in a much more warlike and bloodthirsty manner, until the Gelaming subdued the continent and brought them to terms.

Deria dies in childbirth, and Terzah takes the boys in almost 'by accident' after they sneak up to his tent to try and get food when they run away. They are afraid of Goran who offers to take them in as they know him to be a cruel and evil man.

Terzah hears a telepathic cry for help and storms Goran's compound. He finds a whole group of children being kept in terrible conditions and half starved. He castigates the humans of the town for turning a blind eye to what was happening and agrees to watch out for the welfare of all the children. He actually adopts Ari (Aristander) at the time, followed by Zia later on.

Answer: Poisoned well

After Goran is exiled he becomes a bandit and lurks around the town. He puts dead dogs down the well to make the people fall ill. David is one of the victims and Terzah vows to kill Goran if ever he catches him.

Terzah's second pearl picks the middle of the earthquake to enter the world. This cheers people up after the sadness and chaos of the day.

Jewel is a dedicated teacher and he dies trying to protect the children in his care from Goran and his men. Goran takes the class hostage inside the school building in an attempt to get food, supplies, and Zia back from the town's people. He has reckoned without Terzah though, and is killed later that night.
