Herr Schellen is a sheepdog when they find him, but is restored to humanity when Kate is unwittingly turned into a foxhound. She is rescued when Mr Skelly steps into the Dancing Weans and becomes a terrier.

While magicians have died trying to use ley power, it is possible to use them safely. In the course of investigation, Mr Wrexton discovered an old spell using ley lines that bind the country. Cecy observes a steam train engine pulling a ley line. Later, with the Wrextons, they also note that, after the train has passed, the line is a little stronger.

When Mr Scarlet tries to use his ley magic against Drina, it doesn't work and the power is unconsciously absorbed by the girl.

Georgy has an annoying habit of writing verse in her letters. Kate of course recognizes Georgy's style when she reads the very popular book of very bad poetry. It turns out Georgy had written letters to someone to make Daniel jealous. But the receiver had the letters published to embarrass Georgy.

In the end, Daniel goes to London, buys up every copy of the book, and has them all destroyed.

Mr Skelly is a rather obnoxious Irishman who holds the English in disdain. The only reason he agrees to come and help is because he is persuaded by Theodore Daventer, the young man who was unwittingly made the Emperor of all Europe in "The Grand Tour".

He is still able to influence others and convinces Mr Skelly to come to England to help. Unfortunately, Mr Skelly is so arrogant, he doesn't believe anything he is told about what has happened and he gets turned into a dog!

Mr Webb and his sister were attempting to use the ley lines to influence Parliament, mostly in regards to a railway line they were trying to build. They set up the spell to turn Herr Schellen into a dog so he would stop snooping. Unfortunately, the spell leaked out to the whole ley network and caused them to eventually turn into dogs themselves. Mr Scarlet was assisting them in their nefarious business.

He was also part of the plot to kidnap Drina.
