Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Dance began as a succession crisis following the death of a Targaryen king. Which one?

Answer: Viserys I

Viserys I was the fifth Targaryen king, reigning from 103 to 129 AC. Although the Seven Kingdoms prospered during his reign, the first seeds of the civil war that would follow were planted as well.

Viserys' first wife was Aemma Arryn and their only child that survived infancy was Princess Rhaenyra. However, after the death of Queen Aemma, Viserys was enamored with Alicent Hightower and they got married. Alicent gave Viserys four children, including princes Aegon (who would later become King Aegon II) and Aemond. Princess Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent despised each other, because both wanted to be First Lady of the Realm.

Information comes from "The Princess and the Queen" and "The World of Ice and Fire".
2. In 129 AC, when the king died, the Small Council met in order to decide which of the King's children would take the crown - the daughter from his first marriage or the son from his second one. Although the conversation initially leaned towards the former option, they finally decided to adopt the latter. What was the name of the Hand of the King who presided over the council?

Answer: Otto Hightower

Ser Otto Hightower was the father of Queen Alicent, second wife of King Viserys I.
Otto insisted that it was Prince Aegon who should be crowned, while the Master of Coin, Lord Beesbury, believed that the crown should go to Princess Rhaenyra. Two other Small Council members, Tyland Lannister and Jasper Wylde, also supported Ser Otto, because there was a precedent in choosing the male over the female heirs in the line of succession.

Information comes from "The Princess and the Queen" and "The World of Ice and Fire".
3. After the Council had made its decision, ravens were sent to all those who would support Prince Aegon's claim. Aegon's brother, Aemond, went himself to Storm's End, in order to ensure the aid of House Baratheon by betrothing himself of to one of Lord Baratheon's daughters. What was the name of Lord Baratheon who accepted Aemond's request?

Answer: Borros

We do not know what Borros looked like, but he most certainly had the typical Baratheon looks, meaning he was black of hair and blue of eyes. When the Dance began, Lord Borros was approached first by Prince Aemond and very soon afterwards by Lucerys Velaryon, son of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon (however, some people believe that he was the result of an affair between Rhaenyra and Ser Harwin Strong). Borros accepted Aemond's request and it is said that he tactly allowed Aemond to seek battle with Lucerys when they were outside the walls of Storm's End, knowing that Aemond's dragon was older and stronger. Maester Yandel later wrote of Borros that he "was the wind, which rages and howls and blows this way and that".

Information comes from "The Princess and the Queen" and "The World of Ice and Fire".
4. Open war soon escalated. Due to their dragons, the blacks - the faction supporting Princess Rhaenyra - won some victories, but the death of Rhaenyra's second son outside Storm's End damaged her morale. In order to take revenge, Rhaenyra's husband, Prince Daemon, enlisted the help of a former serjeant of the City Watch of King's Landing and a man working in the Red Keep. Under what names have they passed into history?

Answer: Blood and Cheese

Blood and Cheese used some secret tunnels and reached the Tower of the Hand in the Red Keep. They bound and gagged Queen Alicent and killed her bedmaid. Subsequently, the two thugs waited for the appearance of Aegon II's queen and their children. When the women entered the room, Blood and Cheese barred the gates and told Queen Helaena to choose which of her sons would die.

After a failed attempt to exchange her life with that of her child, Helaena chose her second son, Maelor. Nevertheless, the assassins killed her older son, Jaehaerys, and subsequently fled.
5. The situation for King Aegon II was severe. Because of his Hand's inability to turn the tide of the war, Aegon replaced him with Ser Criston Cole. The King and Cole started attacking Houses that were fighting for Rhaenyra, beginning with House Darklyn and then continuning with House Staunton of Rook's Rest. Yet, the fight at Rook's Rest, while a victory for Aegon, resulted in both him and his dragon being wounded. What was the name of Aegon II's dragon?

Answer: Sunfyre

According to Grand Maester Gyldayn, Sunfyre was the most magnificent dragon to ever appear in Westeros. During the Battle of Rook's Rest, Sunfyre had one wing nearly torn off and he could only fly with difficulty. Later, when Rhaenyra's men retook Rook's Rest, they attempted to kill the dragon, but their attempt failed. Sunfyre managed to go back to Dragonstone, but whether it was out of a homing instinct or whether he had somehow sensed the presence of his master in the island, one can never tell.

Information comes from "The Princess and the Queen" and "The World of Ice and Fire".
6. The course of the war continued and many battles were fought. Finally, Rhaenyra decided to use her dragons and the Velaryon fleet to conquer King's Landing, at a time Ser Criston Cole and Prince Aemond were away. Rhaenyra succeeded, but King Aegon II was spirited out of the city before her forces were in full control. Who was the knight that saved King Aegon?

Answer: Larys Strong

Larys Strong was the Lord of Harrenhal and served as Master of Whisperers in the Small Council of both King Viserys I and King Aegon II. When it became apparent that King's Landing would fall to Rhaenyra, Larys had King Aegon II and his children spirited away. Larys disguised his king as a commoner and ventured with him to Dragonstone, correctly believing that Rhaenyra would not look for him at the heart of her power. Aegon's daughter, Jaehaera, was sent to Storm's End and his son, Maelor, to Oldtown.

Information comes from "The Princess and the Queen" and "The World of Ice and Fire".
7. Rhaenyra's rule did not last long, however. In one of the few occurrences in Westerosi history where the mob played a key role in the sequence of events, the smallfolk of King's Landing rioted against Rhaenyra and stormed the Dragonpit. Only the City Watch of King's Landing attempted to stop them, but failed miserably. Who was the commander of the City Watch at that point?

Answer: Luthor Largent

Luthor Largent's allegiance was to Rhaenyra's husband, Prince Daemon. When Rhaenyra's forces took King's Landing, Largent personally killed his second-in-command, Gwayne Hightower, when the latter tried to prevent him from turning against King Aegon. Later, when Aegon's wife, Helaena, committed suicide, it was whispered among the smallfolk that Largent had pushed her out of the window of the tower to her death. Largent was killed during the riot.

Information comes from "The Princess and the Queen" and "The World of Ice and Fire".
8. After the riot, it was clear that Rhaenyra could not hold King's Landing, so she left. She was refused at Rosby, allowed only for a night at Stokeworth and sold her crown at Duskendale in order to be admitted in a Braavosi ship, but where did she end up?

Answer: Dragonstone

This proved to be an ill choice, since King Aegon II and his Master of Whisperers, Larys Strong, had arrived at Dragonstone posing as commoners and had won the allegiance of the inhabitants of the island. Thus, when Rhaenyra arrived, the remnants of her army were destroyed and she was killed by Aegon II's dragon, Sunfyre. King Aegon took Rhaenyra's son, Aegon the Younger, as a hostage, hoping to prevent his enemies from continuing the war.

Information comes from "The Princess and the Queen" and "The World of Ice and Fire".
9. After Rhaenyra's death, Lord Baratheon secured King's Landing for Aegon II. Unfortuntely, Rhaenyra's cause was not dead yet and an army of rivermen was marching on King's Landing. Lord Baratheon went on to face them. What was the name given to that battle, the last of the Dance?

Answer: Battle of the Kingsroad

The Battle of the Kingsroad was a defeat for Lord Borros Baratheon and his army. Lord Borros took down twelve knights before falling, including Lords Darry and Mallister. Soon after the battle, King Aegon II was poisoned by an unknown assassin. Lord Cregan Stark and his northmen arrived at King's Landing and attempted to stabilize the Seven Kingdoms, after the chaos wrought during the Dance.

Information comes from "The Princess and the Queen" and "The World of Ice and Fire".
10. People in Westeros still remember the events of the Dance more than 150 years later, with maesters, lords and smallfolk still discussing it. Which of the participants of the War of the Five Kings once told his Hand that Rhaenyra Targaryen "was daughter to one king and mother to two more, yet she died a traitor's death for trying to usurp her brother's crown"?

Answer: Stannis Baratheon

Stannis says that in the third book of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, entitled "A Storm of Swords". He and his Hand, Davos Seaworth, had been discussing usurpers and traitors in Westerosi history and the name of Rhaenyra came up, alongside names such as that of Daemon Blackfyre and Grand Maester Hareth.
