Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If someone were to ask you, "Excuse me, but have you seen the yellow sign?", who would he be referring to?

Answer: Hastur

It was originally invented by Robert W. Chambers; Lovecraft incorporated it into his works.
2. Who did HP Lovecraft call his favorite writer of all time?

Answer: Edgar Allan Poe

He had often commented that Poe had the best sense for horror of any writer.
3. Lovecraft invented several books of things Man was not meant to know. Of all of these, the Necronomicon was the most well known. Whom did Lovecraft credit with writing it?

Answer: The Mad Arab

The Mad Arab, as Lovecraft often called him, was probably quite sane until he started researching the unknown to write this book.
4. Where does Great Cthulhu lie sleeping?

Answer: The sunken city of R'yleh

The wonderful city of R'yleh was written about in the short story, "The Call Of Cthulhu."
5. Which entity is referred to as the Dark Mother?

Answer: Shub-niggurath

Her children are the Dark Young of Shub-niggurath, and are horrific goat-shaped creatures.
6. Which fictional city is the "home base" for many of the mythos investigators (the good guys if you will)?

Answer: Arkham

Arkham, Massachusetts, is the main city in Lovecraft's novels.
7. Who is the only "good guy" being from beyond the stars in the Cthulhu Mythos?

Answer: Nodens

Nodens would occasionally be called upon by humans to save them from whatever mythos-related mess they had gotten into. Sometimes he actually helped out too!
8. Who is He who shall not be named?

Answer: Hastur

Apparently, Hastur would appear the instant his name was spoken. He never seemed really pleased to be called on either, as anyone who did died horribly.
9. Where did all the Great Old Ones (Cthulhu and the others) originally live, and where are they destined to return to when the stars are right?

Answer: Earth

Great Cthulhu is the only Great Old One known to still reside on Earth. He slumbers peacefully in the sunken city of R'yleh which is in the Pacific Ocean. Also, Pluto is where some of the lesser servitor races were banished to.
10. Finally, it would be a good thing to be able to recognize Cthulhu when he awakens, so what does he look like?

Answer: a giant octopus that stands on two legs, has wings, and is over 100 feet tall

I once heard a description that sums it up nicely. The old cartoon show "The Real Ghostbusters" had an episode called "The Collect Call of Cthulhu". The comment was made that "A gigantic Godzilla wearing an octopus mask won't be hard to miss."
