Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) and Peregrin Took (Pippin) die and were buried?

Answer: Gondor

In 1484 SR (Shire Reckoning) the passing of Éomer, King of Rohan, was nearby and he requested to see master Holdwine (Merry) one last time. Both Merry and his friend Pippin rode of to Rohan and were never seen again in the Shire. After the death of Éomer they went to Gondor and spent the last years of their lives there and were finally buried in Rath Dínen among the great of Gondor.
2. Sam died in the Shire.

Answer: False

In 1482 SR, Rose Gamgee, wife of Samwise Gamgee, died. Sam passed the Red Book to his daughter Elanor and went over the sea to Valinor as the last of the Ring bearers.
3. How did Saruman die?

Answer: Killed by Gríma Wormtongue in the Shire

Saruman survived the fall of Isengard. Using the magic of his voice he tricked Fangorn (Treebeard), the Ent, in letting him go. He continued his destructive work in the Shire until he was brought to justice by Frodo and his friends after their return from Gondor. Gríma Wormtongue, after being humiliated for countless times, killed Saruman by slicing his throat. Of course Saruman didn't die really, only his body was destroyed.

But like Gandalf or Sauron, Saruman was a Maiar, one of the Ainur which means that his spirit is immortal. What happened after that is unknown.
4. How came Gríma Wormtongue to his end?

Answer: Killed by Hobbits

Gríma was cast away from Meduseld after Théoden had been cured by Gandalf. He was undoubtedly punished after he threw the Palantír out of Orthanc but he was not killed. He went to the Shire with Saruman and continued to be his servant. He finally killed Saruman after another humiliation and was subsequently shot by Hobbit bowmen before Frodo could say a word.
5. How was Smaug, the dragon, killed?

Answer: Slain by Bard the Bowman

Smaug, the Dragon, had descended on Erebor in III, 2770 and had driven the Dwarves out, hoarding treasures Dwarvish, Elvish and Mannish for countless years. In III, 2941 Thorin and his companions set out to drive Smaug out with the help of Gandalf and Bilbo. Bilbo managed to figure out the weak spot of Smaug.

A bird overheard this conversation and told it to Bard the Bowman when Smaug attacked Lake Town. Bard hit Smaug with 'The Black Arrow', his last arrow left and Smaug fell into the lake, taking Lake Town with him.
6. Where was Azog killed?

Answer: Killed at the Battle of Azanulbizar before the East-Gate of Moria by Dáin Ironfoot

Azog was a large Orc. His band had taken Moria when it had been abandoned by the Dwarves. In III, 2790 he killed Thrór, grandfather of Thorin. The Dwarves gathered for revenge and in in III, 2799 they had reached Moria, after destroying every Orcish stronghold near the Misty Mountains. Náin, son of Grog, Thrór's Brother, was slain by Azog, but Dáin Ironfoot, son of Náin leaped from a rock and slew Azog in turn. Bolg, son of Azog, would later lead the Goblins in the Battle of the Five Armies where his bodyguard killed Thorin. Bolg in turn was killed by Beorn.
7. Balin, cousin of Glóin, was killed in Moria. His father Fundin died also at Moria.

Answer: True

Fundin was killed in the great Battle of Azanulbizar at the East-Gate of Moria in III, 2799 when he was driven into the woods with Thráin and Thorin Oakenshield.
8. In what year (Gondorian Reckoning) did King Éomer of Rohan die?

Answer: Year IV, 63

According to the Appendix B (Tale of the Years), Éomer died in 1484 SR. Aragorn died in 1541 SR which was IV, 120 in the Reckoning of Gondor. Counting backwards you'll reach the year IV, 63. III, 3019 was the year in which Sauron fell and the Ring was destroyed. Year IV, 45 has no special note in the Appendix.
9. Legolas became King of Mirkwood after the War of the Ring.

Answer: False

No record indicates that Thranduil, father of Legolas, was killed. Legolas is known to have travelled with his friend Gimli through Fangorn, the Caves of Helm's Deep and eventually settled in Ithilien with some of the Elves of Mirkwood. After the death of Aragorn it is said that he followed his greatest desire and sailed oversea towards Valinor. Gimli, his friend, is said to have travelled with him.
10. How did the Dwarf Gimli, the Elf-friend, come to his end?

Answer: Sailed over the Sea

After the War of the Ring he travelled with his friend, the Elf Legolas and brought him to the Glittering Caves of Helm's Deep. As promised he later visited Fangorn with Legolas. Gimli later brought Dwarves from Erebor to Minas Tirith and forged a new gate of mithril for the City.

He then became Lord of the Glittering Caves. It is said that Gimli travelled over the Sea with his best Friend Legolas for their friendship and his desire to see the Lady Galadriel again.
11. Which of these Elves did sail over the Sea to Valinor?

Answer: Legolas

There are no accounts that Celeborn, Thranduil or the sons of Elrond sailed over the Sea. It is presumed that Celeborn dwelled in Rivendell with the sons of Elrond for some time after the passing of Elrond and Galadriel. Why those three would remain behind is not known. Celeborn, Thranduil and the Elves of Lórien and Mirkwood were Sindar Elves, Elves that had not sailed into the West before the First Age, but remained in Beleriand. That could be an explanation as of why they didn't journey West after the War of the Ring, though it remains strange that Celeborn didn't follow his wife. Galadriel, Elrond and the Elves of Rivendell were Noldor Elves.

The Noldor did journey to Valinor in ages past. They returned to Middle-Earth to make War on Morgoth and recover the Silmarills.

They had killed Teleri sailors to acquire their ships in Valinor and the sons of Fëanor assailed Elwing to recover the Silmaril Beren had wrestled from Morgoth. Later they stole the remaining two Silmarils from the victorious Eldar Army. Because of those deeds the Noldor were forbidden to return to Valinor with the host.

But because of their struggles against Sauron in the Second and Third Age they were finally allowed to return. Elrond and Galadriel and the host of Rivendell did. The sons of Elrond, Elrohir and Elladan, had the choice to choose between the Elvish kind and the kind of Man, like their sister Arwen. Their final choice is unknown. Thranduil remained in Mirkwood most likely.
12. The grandfather of Legolas was a Captain in Gil-galad's army. He died in the War of the Last Alliance. What was his name?

Answer: Oropher

Oropher was King of Mirkwood and father of Thranduil. He led the Elves of Mirkwood into the War of the Last Alliance to the Battle of Dagorlad under Gil-galad. He fell on the Dagorlad along 2/3 of his army of Sindarin Elves of Mirkwood.
13. What was the final end of Arwen?

Answer: Died of grief in Lórien in IV, 121

Having forsaken immortality, Arwen was not allowed to sail west to Valinor. After Aragorn died she left Minas Tirith and laid herself to rest in Lórien, where no Elves dwelled anymore. The last option refers to her mother Celebrían, wife of Elrond. She had been captured, tortured and poisoned by Orcs before her sons rescued her. She passed over the sea after being healed by Elrond.
14. What was the final fate of Eärendil the Mariner?

Answer: Sailing across the sky with the Silmaril on his brow

Eärendil the Mariner, a Half-Elf, had sailed over the sea trying to reach Valinor to beg for help from the Valar against Morgoth. When the sons of Fëanor attacked his people, his wife Elwing, also an Half-Elf, was transformed into a bird by Ulmo and with the Silmaril on her breast she flew to Eärendil. With the power of the jewel they reached Valinor and persuaded the Valar into the War of Wrath. Eärendil was placed into the sky in his ship, Vingilot, and the Silmaril on his chest and became the brightest star.

He slew Ancalagon, the Great Winged Dragon, in the War of Wrath and smote him onto the Thangorodrim. Elwing and Eärendil were granted the choice of Lúthien and both chose to be counted among the Eldar. Since then Eärendil sails the sky.
15. Where did Balin die?

Answer: Moria in III, 2994

Balin was the son of Fundin and cousin of Glóin, Gimli's father. Together with Glóin he went to Erebor with Thorin Oakenshield to get rid of Smaug the Dragon. He survived the Battle of the Five Armies and eventually led a Dwarven expedition to Moria to make it a Dwarven Colony once again.

As Lord of Moria he was slain in III, 2994 by an Orc arrow. His father Fundin also died during the Battle of Azanulbizar roughly 200 years earlier (see question 7).
16. What was Bilbo's fate?

Answer: He sailed into the West

Bilbo sailed into the West along with the last host of the Elves, including Galadriel and Elrond. With them came Frodo and Gandalf. Bilbo's fate after the passing is unknown.
17. What was Frodo's fate?

Answer: He sailed into the West

Frodo sailed into West with Bilbo, Gandalf and the Elves.
18. What happened to Eöl the Dark Elf?

Answer: Cast over the cliffs by the Gondolindrim

Eöl was a great smith. He forged the blades Anglachel and Anguirel from meteoric iron. Anglachel he gave to King Thingol while he kept Anguirel for himself. Anglachel would later be the blade of Beleg Strongbow and Túrin Turambar (reforged as Gurthang). Eöl enchanted Aredhel, sister of King Turgon of Gondolin and married her. Aredhel returned to Gondolin later with her son in I, 345 but Eöl followed her.

He found his way into Gondolin and was captured. He was welcomed as a fellow Elf but was not allowed to ever leave the city again on the penalty of death as all dwellers of Gondolin.

He chose death rather than confinement and shot a poisoned dart at his son Maeglin. Aredhel took the dart instead of her son and died. The Gondolindrim cast Eöl over the cliffs in punishment (ironically it would be Maeglin who betrayed the city years later).
19. What is the final fate of Elros, brother of Elrond?

Answer: Died of old age

Elrond and Elros fought in the War of Wrath. Both were the children of Elwing and Eärendil and thus had to make a choice between the Eldar and the Edain. While Elrond chose to be counted among the Elves, Elros chose to be counted among Men and he became the first King of Númenor through which Aragorn would descent eventually. Arwen and Aragorn thus are related (very distantly).
20. Who survived the Fall of Gondolin and escaped?

Answer: Tuor

Ecthelion and Glorfindel were mighty Elf-lords. Ecthelion slew and was slain by Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs. Glorfindel fell into an abbys of the Encircling Mountains while fighting off another Balrog while covering the retreat of the survivors, including Tuor, Tuor's wife Idril and their son Eärendil.

The Balrog went down as well and with his death Glorfindel had made certain that Eärendil would escape, a crucial thing since it was Eärendil who brought the Valar to Middle-Earth to fight Morgoth. King Turgon was also slain in the Fall of Gondolin.

It is debated whether Glorfindel of Gondolin is the same as Glorfindel of Rivendell. This is certainly possibly. The spirit of the Elves are immortal (like the spirits of the Ainur, to which Valar and Maiar belonged. Among the Maiar where Sauron, the Wizards, Balrogs and Eagles) and Glorfindel could have re-embodied (like Gandalf the Maia) and sent back to Middle-Earth. Fact remains that he was killed when he fell into the Abyss with the Balrog.

His battered body was later recovered by Thoronder, Lord of the Eagles. I hope you enjoyed my quiz. If you did, feel free to play Part 1 (http://www.funtrivia.com/quizdetails.cfm?id=86358)
