Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the book, during the prologue and the siege of Prague, how does Bartimaeus's master die?

Answer: He is killed when the Inferno Stick he uses blows up.

When his master dies, Bartimaeus is freed from his bonds and floats away to the Other Place, right before an afrit's scythe that would have killed him hits harmlessly into the dirt. Bartimaeus is on the Czech side that is eventually defeated by Gladstone and his two afrits, Patterknife and Honorius.
2. What office is Nathaniel a part of, under the command of Mr. Julius Tallow?

Answer: Internal Affairs

Interestingly enough, Nathaniel is following in the footsteps of his previous master, Arthur Underwood, whom he despised. His new master, Jessica Whitwell, is a much more powerful magician, considered one of the top four magicians in the government.
3. Kitty and Jakob Hyrnek, Kitty's best friend, are hit with the Black Tumbler by Julius Tallow's servant. What was his servant's name?

Answer: Nemaides

This demon usually uses the guise of a green monkey, its preferred form. Most djinn and other demons have preferred forms; Bartimaeus is particularly fond of the Ptolemy guise, for example. Nemaides hits them with the Black Tumbler, though miraculously Kitty is unharmed while Jakob suffers permanent black-grey lines on his face and temporary blindness.

This incident causes Kitty to join the "Resistance," a group of commoners with powers that allow them to either see demons (whom are normally invisible to all commoners), be able to sense auras coming from magical objects, or simply be able to be unharmed by most magical attacks from demons.
4. Where is the first attack by the Golem aimed at?

Answer: Pinn's Accoutrements and surrounding stores

During the attack on Pinn's Accoutrements, Simpkin, the servant foliot of Sholto Pinn, is killed by the Golem. Other casualties are three demi-afrits and six Greybacks, members of the elite Night Police, the leader of whom is Henry Duvall. Pinn's is attacked first, followed by the National Gallery, and then the British Museum. Gladstone's Tomb is never attacked by the Golem.
5. What does Bartimaeus first throw at the Golem in the British Museum?

Answer: The Rosetta Stone

This is a tricky one. He first throws a stone which he describes as "an odd black stone, of irregular outline, small enough to lift, but large enough to brain an afrit nicely. It had a lot of scribbling down one flat side, which I didn't have time to read." This stone, as we later find out, is the Rosetta Stone. You can draw this conclusion from what is said during the interrogation of Bartimaeus and Nathaniel later in the book, where one of the magicians states that the Rosetta Stone was lost. Making the connection you can see that the Rosetta Stone was what was thrown at the Golem.
6. In Prague, when Nathaniel meets the agent, he needs to wear a red feather in his hat. What kind of red was this feather supposed to be for the contact, Harlequin, to recognize it?

Answer: Blood Red

Harlequin carries an "interesting candle," which turns out to be a severed human hand containing an imp. Harlequin is later killed by a soldier, and Nathaniel swears vengeance for his death. During his stay in Prague Nathaniel discovers a magician named Kavka who made an animation paper that was required to be placed in the Golem's mouth to animate the Golem. Also an important part of the summoning/creation of a Golem was a Golem's eye, which was placed in the forehead of the Golem, allowing the magician controlling it to see what the Golem saw.

When a Golem was killed it would start to deteriorate, but would first return to its master and collapse at his feet. After learning who made the paper, John Mandrake (Nathaniel's official name), escaped with the help of Bartimaeus and came back to England where a situation with a rogue afrit was unfolding.
7. When Kitty and the rest of the Resistance break into the tomb of Gladstone, an afrit, Honorius, attacks and kills four out of the six members that entered the tomb. Who were the two members that survived?

Answer: Kitty and Nick

Kitty survives by pointing pure silver at Honorius, a substance which messes with his essence. Anne meets up with Kitty in the nave but is killed by the afrit that drags her into the darkness. Nick survived because he ran while the others fought, and Kitty later shows disdain for him in her meeting with Mr. Hopkins, an informant of the Resistance, later the next day. Mr. Pennyfeather is killed on the steps when he is unable to continue moving, as he is an old man, and Fred and Stanley are killed in the tomb while fighting with the afrit.
8. How many Night Police members does Kitty injure or kill when she goes to rescue Jakob Hyrnek?

Answer: Six

John Mandrake uses Jakob as bait to lure Kitty into an environment where he can capture her and interrogate her. His plan is foiled by the Night Police, who follow him there and attempt to catch Kitty who is heavily armed with Elemental Spheres and Mouler Glasses, among other weapons.

This forces John to have to send Bartimaeus to catch Kitty and take her to the library where John and Bartimaeus are set to meet. Bartimaeus takes Kitty in the form of a roc, a giant ancient bird. However, John Mandrake does not reach the library on time as he is caught by the Night Police who believe he is undermining control of this situation.

He manages to quick talk his way out of this situation and he goes to the library eventually with permission of the Prime Minister.

He then takes Kitty into custody and makes her go to the place where she has taken Gladstone's staff, an item of immense power. After they step out of this place they are met by Honorius the afrit and the Golem, who both have come to kill them.

The afrit and the Golem get in a fight, where the afrit hurls himself at the Golem, and his essence is promptly turned to smoldering ash by the earthy powers of the Golem.
9. Who eventually jumps onto the Golem and rips the paper out, consequently causing the Golem to stop his rampage and return to his master?

Answer: Kitty

Kitty jumps on the Golem's back while Jakob distracts it. Nathaniel is rendered useless as he has been knocked out by a discharge of the staff he tried to use. Bartimaeus had been cleared of all previous charges earlier in the chapter, so he just stood and watched the scene unfold.
10. Who, as we learn at the end of the book, controlled the Golem?

Answer: Duvall

Duvall used the Golem to wreak havoc on the city which would allow him to place the blame on Internal Affairs for not stopping the Resistance. This would mean the Prime Minister would have to give him more power and he would be able to overthrow the Prime Minister and take over as the new ruler.
