Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Jaffe work in the beginning of the story?

Answer: At the Dead Letter Office

Jaffe worked at the Dead Letter department at the Post Office. Thousands of letters were there, sent by people with no return addresses or to places that didn't exist. At first he hated the work because it was slow-going and boring. His job was to find anything valuable and share it with his co-workers. Jaffe's boss, Homer, constantly brought in more mail.
2. What did Jaffe find that finally set him off at work?

Answer: A symbol

Jaffe would find bits of information here and there that suggested there was another world besides the seen world. Nothing was ever concrete, and the letters were few and far between. But Jaffe became obsessed with finding out more about this other world and the society that knew about it.

He eventually found a symbol that he knew was important. It was shaped like a plus sign with a man standing with his arms spread in its center. Jaffe then destroyed all of the evidence he found and left Omaha, Nebraska, to try and find the secret world.
3. What did Kissoon want from Jaffe?

Answer: His body

Jaffe left Omaha, Nebraska to seek out the Art. He was obsessed. He eventually made his way through a desert and to a small hut. Inside he met a man named Kissoon, who claimed that he was the final member of the Shoal, the organization with knowledge about the Art and Quiddity. Kissoon promised Jaffe he'd tell him everything he knew about the Art-in exchange for his physical body. Jaffe didn't understand why someone who acted so powerful would need a body.
4. What did Fletcher and The Jaff call their minions?

Answer: Hallucigenia and terata

Fletcher and The Jaff became mortal enemies after they each received the Nuncio. So equally matched were they that they couldn't beat each other one-on-one. They would find innocent bystanders and make their minds into their fighters. However, none of them would live much longer after being transformed.

The Jaff took nightmares from people and named them terata; Fletcher took pleasant dreams and named them his hallucigenia.
5. Which mother(s) were picked by Fletcher to carry his "good" children?

Answer: Trudi and Arleen

Fletcher didn't like the idea of doing it, but because The Jaff chose the girls, he did too. Their disgust was mutual when two of their "offspring" felt a mutual connection to one another. Howie and Jo-Beth instantly fell in love. Tommy-Ray and Jo-Beth were destined to be evil, fathered by The Jaff.

They were both given two names by Joyce because they had two fathers. Carolyn also had twins, but the boy was a stillborn. However, Carolyn sensed her baby girl, Linda, was evil, so she took her life as well as her own. Trudi's son Howie was destined to be good, fathered by Fletcher. Arleen, then, must have been destined to give birth to a "good" child.

However, she was infertile.
6. What was unique about Raul?

Answer: He was an ape

Fletcher used the Nuncio and turned an ape into a boy. Although it worked, Raul still looked apelike. He had fur all over him and his eyes had no whites to them. Raul constantly called Fletcher "father," and Fletcher repeatedly told him not to. Raul represented the power that the Nuncio had.
7. Where was Howie when he first met Jo-Beth?

Answer: In a restaurant

Howie wanted to return to the town where he was born to try and find out who he was. But instead, he found the woman of his dreams in Jo-Beth. He went to a restaurant where Jo-Beth happened to work, Butrick's Steak House, and was about to order soda when he saw her. Once they made eye contact, their lives changed. It was love at first sight, but neither of them understood why or how.
8. Besides Grillo, who saw a face come out of the open fissure in the woods?

Answer: Hotchkiss

The police and others ventured near the fissure that opened in the ground, resulting in the death of Buddy Vance. Grillo was sent to Palomo Grove to research the story. During the search for Buddy's remains, several workers were killed by a catastrophic quake of some sort. Grillo acted valiantly and while trying to prevent more tragic deaths, he and Carolyn's father, Hotchkiss, witnessed a face in the wave of water that had been flowing from the break in the ground. Later on Grillo learned that it was The Jaff.
9. What was a unique characteristic about Howie?

Answer: He had a stutter

Howard Kratz had long hair, glasses, and a stutter. In the beginning of the story, he referred to his body as "the machine," something he used to get around. But after meeting - and falling in love with - Jo-Beth he knew his body was more than some cold machine.

When he was near her, his stutter got much better. Joyce told Howie that Trudi, his mother, might have coupled with a man who worked at her church. Howie smiled when he learned that man also had a stutter.
10. If Fletcher had one saying, something he lived for, what would it be?

Answer: "Quiddity must be preserved"

Several times throughout the story, Fletcher said, "Quiddity must be preserved!" He knew that should The Jaff succeed, Quiddity would be harmed and even possibly destroyed because of his evil ways and thirst for the Art. Fletcher feared for the "dream-sea" and would do anything to save it.
11. Tommy-Ray insisted to The Jaff that Jo-Beth join them. When Howie tried to stop them, what happened?

Answer: They made their minions attack him

Tommy-Ray had inappropriate feelings for his twin sister and wanted her to be with him. When Howie tried to stop him, The Jaff threw a terata that resembled a centipede at him after Tommy-Ray ripped the back of his shirt. The nightmarish terata bit him very hard on the back of the neck and Howie grew weak.

The monster began to attach itself to his back. He had no choice but to run, the army of terata at his heels as he struggled to survive.
12. What were Grillo and Tesla attempting to do before they met Howie?

Answer: They were leaving the Grove

Tesla convinced Grillo to leave Palomo Grove for just a day. He'd contracted the flu and needed to clear his head for his big story. He was hesitant to leave, but finally relented to leave for just a day. However, while driving, they found Howie, who had a terata attached to his back. Tesla left Grillo in the car, only to see an army of terata heading right at them, still chasing Howie.

She carried him to the Mall, where Howie could feel his father Fletcher summoning him.
13. How did Fletcher manipulate the Grove?

Answer: He set off several alarms at the Mall

Palomo Grove's inhabitants felt that something strange was happening in their town. That feeling was compounded one night when several alarms went off at the Mall, in the center of the city. Fletcher had broken several windows and successfully attracted a large crowd.

As he died, several globes of light reached them. With his last act, Fletcher created over fifty of his hallucigenia to help fight The Jaff.
14. Why did Tommy-Ray regret forming his own army?

Answer: He couldn't control them

At the Mission, Tommy-Ray received the same thing his father The Jaff did: the Nuncio. It transformed him into "Death-Boy." With the power, he conjured up ghosts from multiple cemeteries - even at a car crash - and they told him they would follow him.

The thought of having followers intrigued the Death-Boy, so he allowed them to follow him. However, they were a bloodthirsty group and brought chaos and death everywhere with them. He knew he wouldn't be able to control his followers and regretted allowing them to trail behind.
15. What was the fate of Eve, the elderly star Grillo befriended at Buddy Vance's party?

Answer: She escaped with her life

Evelyn Quayle attended the party held in Buddy Vance's honor. She was sassy and knew how fake the fellow stars were. She realized Grillo was a reporter but chose not to reveal his secret. Eve followed Lamar, The Jaff's human helper, up the stairs in Vance's mansion.

He led her to The Jaff so he could turn her nightmares into his terata. But Grillo was able to manipulate the situation to his advantage, letting her leave, terrified. Despite her attempts to raise help, the partygoers around her were too intoxicated to help.

Some thought she was drunk or crazy. She was eventually saved by a young up-and-coming actor who was simple yet kind enough to remove her from the mansion.
