Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which book does Katniss sing "The Hanging Tree"?

Answer: Mockingjay

When Katniss and the propaganda film crew go back to the ruins of District Twelve to film some footage, she sings the song during a lunch break. She wants to show Pollux, one of the cameramen, how the mockingjays would mimic her by singing the song back.
2. Who taught the song to Katniss?

Answer: her father

When Katniss was younger, before her father died, he taught her and Prim "The Hanging Tree". But, when her mother found the girls singing the song, she became angry and forbade them from singing it anymore.
3. In the song, what question is continuously asked of the listener?

Answer: Are you coming to the tree?

The song has four stanzas, with only one line that differs in each one. They all start with "Are you, are you, coming to the tree?"
4. The first stanza of the song explains that the Hanging Tree got its name because it was where a man was hanged. What did he allegedly do that led to his death?

Answer: He murdered three people.

The song begins with the lines, "Are you, are you, coming to the tree, where they strung up a man they say murdered three?" The wording makes it seem as if he may have been innocent, though.
5. At what time does the singer suggest they meet at the Hanging Tree?

Answer: midnight

The time for the proposed meeting is mentioned in the line, "...if we met up at midnight in the Hanging Tree." Midnight seems like a creepy time to meet up at a place called the Hanging Tree. But, then again, the entire song is haunting.
6. What word correctly completes this lyric: "_____ things did happen here"?

Answer: Strange

The rest of the line goes, "Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be, if we met up at midnight in the Hanging Tree." These lines end each stanza.
7. In the lyrics, what did the dead man call out for his love to do?

Answer: flee

The second stanza begins with "Are you, are you, coming to the tree, where the dead man called out for his love to flee?" Katniss thinks "the talking-corpse bit" is weird, but that the song only gets more unnerving as it goes on.
8. Fill in this lyric from the song: "Where I told you to run, so we'd both _____."

Answer: be free

This line is from the third stanza. While Katniss is thinking about the lyrics she explains that at first you might think he is telling his love to run away to safety, but it could be interpreted as him wanting her to come to him and to death.
9. What does the singer tell the listener to wear side by side with him?

Answer: a necklace of rope

The line this is from is, "Wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me." This line is from the last stanza. The line showss that the singer wants his love to kill herself and join him in death.
10. Is the song sung in the perspective of the man who was hanged?

Answer: Yes

Katniss did not realize that the singer was the dead man at first, but as the she grew up, she realized that was the case. She used to think the murderer was "the creepiest guy imaginable". But, after being in the Hunger Games, she doesn't want to judge without knowing the details.
