1. What was the original name of the first bear belonging to the Berry family?

Answer: State O' Maine

This was the bear's name given to him by Freud. The Berry family later changed his name to Earl.
2. Which of the Berry children followed in Iowa Bob's (their grandfather) footsteps, weightlifting?

Answer: John Berry

After he was unable to help his sister, Franny, when she was "beat up", John took up weightlifting to overcome his feelings of helplessness.
3. Which two of the Berry family died in a plane crash on the way to Vienna?

Answer: Mother and Egg

The flight would actually have stopped in Zurich, then continued on to Vienna, "but Mother and Egg-and Sorrow-landed short of Zürich."
4. What was the name of the boy who participated in Franny's "beating" and who became the victim of revenge exacted by the Berry children many years later?

Answer: Chipper Dove

Franny refused to admit what really happened when she was "beat up." She continued to write to Chipper Dove over the years, so it was easy to lure him to her when the opportunity knocked to exact their revenge in Manhatten years later.
5. What was the title of Lilly's first book?

Answer: Trying to Grow

She was eighteen and had stopped growing taller several years before. "Trying to grow" was a euphemism she used when writing, meaning trying to grow mentally and emotionally.
6. How did Iowa Bob die?

Answer: The stuffed version of Sorrow fell out of his closet, giving him a heart attack.

Frank, in a gesture of kindness, stuffed Sorrow after he was put to sleep as a gift for Franny. Putting the dog in an attack pose was not was wise decision and Franny rejected the gift. The stuffed version of Sorrow was thrown away, but Egg resurrected him from the trash, hiding him in Iowa Bob's closet.
7. What was the name of the street the second Hotel New Hampshire was located on, in Vienna?

Answer: Krugerstrasse

Kärtnerstrasse was a street around the corner. Schraubenschlüssel was one of the radical's names, meaning "wrench." (He was constantly working on a car.) Strassesbahn was a main-line train, fully named the Mariahilfer Strasse Strassenbahn.
8. What were the names of the "working women" who occupied the second floor of the second Hotel New Hampshire?

Answer: Old Billig, Babette, Jolanta, Dark Inge, and Screaming Annie

Old Billig -billig means "cheap" in German, was the oldest woman and the cheapest. Babette was called Babette because she was the only one who could speak French. Jolanta nicknamed herself a Polish name, because she liked Polish jokes. Dark Inge was Screaming Annie's daughter, aged 11, and did not actually work.
9. What book did the radical, Fräulein Fehlgeburt, read to the Berry children?

Answer: The Great Gatsby

She began reading just to Lilly, but the others would listen in. The ending in particular touched Lilly deeply. The family would not understand how deeply until it was too late.
10. How did Lilly end her life?

Answer: Jumped from a fourteenth floor window

Lilly's suicide note read "Sorry, just not big enough." Her size physically and emotionally haunted her her entire life.
